Description
1671. COKE, Edward. The Third Part of the Institutes of the Laws of England. Concerning High Treason, and other Pleas of the Crown, and Criminal Causes. BOUND WITH: The Fourth Part… Concerning the Jurisdiction of Courts. London: A. Crooke, et al.; John Streater, et al., 1671. Two volumes bound in one. Small, thick folio (8 by 11-1/2 inches), contemporary full sheep, raised bands, renewed morocco spine label. $3000.Fifth editions of the Third and Fourth Institutes, dealing with criminal law and court jurisdiction, and re-emphasizing the supremacy of common law over royal prerogative, with frontispiece portraits of Coke by noteworthy engraver John Payne. The third and fourth parts of the Institutes (as well as the second part, not present here) were all published after Coke's death, by order of the House of Commons. Following the publication of his First Part of the Institutes in 1628, Coke became aware that his remaining views would give offense to the Crown, so he wisely withheld publication during his lifetime. ""In three famous cases Judge Coke thwarted the wishes of the King, to demonstrate in each that the royal prerogative could not over-ride the Law; and after a fourth, which resulted in a direct confrontation with James I, he was dismissed from all his offices"" (PMM 126). When his works finally appeared in 1642 and 1644, ""it was an hour of victory of the common law and the Parliament. The result was that Coke's writings were accepted, and made the basis of [English] constitutional and common law"" (Holdsworth, Sources, 143). The Third Part is devoted to criminal law. ""Having run over all criminal matters, and their legal punishments, he concludes with the nature of pardons and restitutions, showing how far in each of these, our Kings can proceed alone, and where they want the assistance and joint power of their Parliaments"" (Marvin, 208). The Fourth Part deals with the jurisdiction of the courts. ""Throughout his book he maintains his views as to the supremacy of the common law and the common law courts… The result of his fight for the supremacy of the common law was to make English law a very much more uniform system than it would otherwise have been"" (Holdsworth, 142, 146). First published (both Third and Fourth Parts) in 1644. Wing C4965, C4932. See Sweet & Maxwell, I:360, 258; Marvin, 208-09; Harvard Library Catalogue, I:414. Upper corner of frontispiece to Third Part torn, not affecting image. Text generally clean. Some scuffing to covers, restoration to spine ends and corners. A very good early folio edition.

Very good plus in very good jacket.
Description
Washington, DC: Anderson House, 1939. First printing. Very good plus in very good jacket.. Inscribed association first edition of Anderson's verse play, the basis for the classic 1948 John Huston film noir starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall in their last roles together. This copy is inscribed to "a friend of mine who was a lawyer in Boston, a fellow by the name of [Robert] Montgomery with whom I went to the University of North Dakota" (Anderson, LETTERS). Montgomery was the author of SACCO-VANZETTI: The Murder and the Myth, drawing on his acquaintance with many of the figures involved in the trial, and his opinions informed Anderson's writing of his two plays based on the Sacco-Vanzetti case, GODS OF THE LIGHTNING (1928) and WINTERSET (1935). WINTERSET in particular was directly inspired by conversation with Montgomery, who "told me that I shouldn't think so badly of the fellow who condemned Sacco and Vanzetti. [...] Montgomery said, 'The old fellow really deserves your sympathy.' That really gave me the idea for the judge, and then for the rest of it." An uncommon association. 7.25'' x 5''. Original grey cloth stamped in dark red. In original unclipped ($2.50) pictorial dust jacket. Pictorial endpapers. 125, [1] pages. Inscribed by Anderson "For Bob and Mary Montgomery / from Max / 1939" on half title. Additionally signed by Anderson on title page. Light bumping to boards, light chipping/scuffing to jacket with a few small closed tears.

S. l.: s. n., 1915. Very good. Original, glossy photograph, n. d. (ca 1915); 6 x 9 1/4; typed text to verso; two crease lines and two small nicks to left edge and lower corner; in very good condition. Showing a close-up of a beautiful passenger car, the image was captioned: "Exterior view of Saloon Coach for Mar del Plata service, converted from 2nd class day coach for suburban service." Founded in 1862, the Buenos Aires Great Southern Railway was one of the so-called Big Four, broad gauge, British-owned railway companies in Argentina in the 19th- and early 20th - centuries. With several branches and extensions in the works, the first train to reach the Atlantic and the main beach city in the country, Mar del Plata, arrived in 1886. By 1910, the enormous number of visitors converging in the summer months would prompt the construction of a second train station in the city - to be utilized only during the tourist season. With the nationalization of the entire Argentine railway network in 1948 the Buenos Aires Great Southern Railway would become part of the State-owned Ferrocarriles Argentinos.
