[An extensive collection of illustrated Civil War envelope covers produced in the North.] Envelopes of the Civil War [spine-title]
Seller
James Arsenault & Company (United States)
Description
[U.S., 1861-1865.]. Folio (15" x 11.5"), full red leather with gilt title and rules at spine, spine recently renewed. 380 excised envelope covers mounted on 183 leaves. Two covers addressed; one envelope with period manuscript illustrations by the recipient or the sender. CONDITION: Very good, moderate wear to covers; envelopes very good, occasional light wear. An extraordinary collection of illustrated envelope covers produced during the Civil War, featuring a cornucopia of themes relating to the war and its effect on everyday life, as mounted and bound by an early twentieth century collector. These envelopes feature a remarkably wide range of subjects: American flags; eagles; military and battle scenes from the war; Lady Liberty and female muses; the women who stayed behind during the war; the Confederate flag upside-down; the Capitol at Washington D.C.; the devil; Uncle Sam; a Black woman nursing a white baby; maritime scenes; a Black man watching Union men hoist the American flag; Zouaves; campfire scenes; liberty bells; coats of arms; Union sailors; a Union drummer boy; Camp Dennison near Cincinnati, Ohio; cotton-themed images, Union hospitals; George Washington; Ulysses S. Grant; cartoons of Southerners and the Confederacy; Union officers, a Black man dancing (with the text "Old John Brown is Dead, but I still live"); cannons; The Battle of Bull Run; heroes of the American Revolutionary War, etc.  The slogans and catchphrases on the envelopes include "Victory," "the Union now & forever," "The girl I left behind," "Death to traitors," "Truth and victory," "Maintain the government," and "Union Y Libertad." Themes such as secession and treason frequently recur, and animals such as rats and snakes are often used as symbols of the Confederacy. Some envelopes bear the names of specific corps, divisions, and regiments of the Union Army, while others relate to individual states (Arkansas, Pennsylvania, Vermont, California, Delaware, etc.). A few envelopes deal with the international response to the war, and a handful of envelopes feature poetry and verse.

Near fine
Description
Phoenix, Arizona, 1969. Near fine. 24 contact sheets each measuring 8" x 10", with a total of 196 images; three 8" x 10" photographs are also included. Most images measure 3" x 2½". Generally near fine or better; five of the contact sheets are trimmed and missing a few images each. This is a collection of photographs related to an art fair and other events at the Heard Museum in April 1969. The museum was initially founded in 1929 and closed for eight months beginning in the summer of 1968. It reopened with a gala on March 29, 1969. Per contemporary news accounts, that reopening coincided with "a 10-day celebration featuring dances and arts and crafts displays by tribes from the United States, Canada and Mexico." The photos here document the events of the celebration with all but a few showing Native Americans and/or their art. Approximately 85 shots are devoted to an arts and crafts fair where we see Native Americans exhibiting their works for sale. Identified vendors include Navajo Community College and Philip Cassadore. Cassadore was a musician who made several records related to Apache songs and music. Other images here include a sand painting demonstration, a woman weaving a rug, and several show Native artists sketching or painting. The non-art show images show Native Americans in traditional clothing participating in dances, some show an awards ceremony, and others show some of the smaller events of the festival. The three 8x10s each show a Native American in traditional clothing. Terrific images of an under-documented Native American event at the Heard Museum.

Description
Vintage original 9 x 7" (23 x 18 cm.) borderless single weight glossy silver gelatin print still photo, USA. Judy Garland, Dirk Bogarde, Jack Klugman, Aline MacMahon, Gregory Phillips, dir: Ronald Neame; United Artists. Judy Garland's satisfying swan song film. Originally titled (and released in Europe) as The Lonely Stage, both titles were appropriate for Garland. Essentially a soap opera, nowadays it is seen as a glossy 1960s drama in the style of The V.I.P.s and similar 60s films. Even today, the acting by both Garland and Bogarde (and the supports) is considered superb and the musical interludes, spell binding. Most of Garland's concert performance work in the film was shot at the actual London Palladium, the scene of several record breaking concert engagements by Garland. A mock-up of the Palladium stage was erected at Shepperton Studios for some of her songs and this still is for one of those. Here she performs, with just a pianist (David Lee), the beautiful Kurt Weill-Maxwell Anderson song "It Never Was You". Judy Garland is framed in light on the stage, an iconic image of the beloved lady. Bob Willoughby is credited with the still photography on this film. It is coded "LS (1317)-3" on the front. A very fine glossy print, FINE.
