Description
Bloomington, IN: Media Montage, Inc, 1977. Staplebound wraps. Very good. Staplebound wraps. Bloomington, Indiana: Media Montage, Inc., Summer 1977. 32pp. 8.5" x 11". Staple-bound. Illustrated throughout with black-and-white photographs. Mild foxing to cover wraps, age toning to page edges, else near fine. A scarce issue of this short-lived Indiana University-affiliated film and media criticism journal, supported by a grant from the Indiana Arts Commission and produced with the assistance of the IU Fine Arts Library. This issue is notable for its contemporaneous coverage of Star Wars (May 1977), appearing within weeks of the film's release, as well as substantial original interviews (including with Walter Tevis) and critical content of enduring research value. Contents include: An extended critical re-evaluation of the French film Cousin, Cousine; "Mosts and Leasts," a review-essay on Star Wars by Craig Ridenour; "Star Words," featuring original quotations from George Lucas, Mark Hamill, Alec Guinness, Carrie Fisher, and Peter Cushing; an in-depth interview with Walter Tevis by editor Jill Caldwell, in which the author of The Man Who Fell to Earth (1963) discusses the Nicolas Roeg adaptation, the original casting consideration of Peter O'Toole for the role of Newton, his dissatisfaction with the screenplay, and the autobiographical dimensions of his fiction - conducted while Tevis was still teaching at Ohio University and predating his celebrated late-career return to writing by three years; a "Media/Indiana" news section covering the Indiana Film Council, Purdue's Annual Conference on Film, and profiles of Indiana independent filmmakers including Steve Snyder's Comic Book; an essay on Latin American cinema; a history of radio comedy and an interview with Carroll Carroll, conducted via WFIU Public Radio, Bloomington; an interview with Los Angeles revival theater owner Tom Cooper of the Vagabond Theatre; and excerpts from an Elmer Bernstein lecture on film music delivered at the 1976 University Film Association Conference. Advertisers include Caveat Emptor (used bookstore still in Bloomington as of 2026) and Michael's Art & Drafting Supplies (College Mall, Bloomington), providing period documentation of the Bloomington cultural scene. A letter from Harve Bennett, Executive Producer of The Bionic Woman, responding to the Star Wars coverage, appears on page 3.
