Description
François Rabelais, illustrated with colored woodcuts drawn and engraved by André Derain Limited numbered edition of 275 copies, of which this copy is on of 200 in Velin d'Arches, signed by the artist on the justification page. Derain's main illustrated work, with 128 (21 full-page) original color woodcuts, 34 color woodcut initials and 18 color woodcut final vignettes. André Derain took full charge of the printing process from the carving of the wood blocks, in the manner of 15th-century cardmakers, to the coloring to which he added special attention to preserve the warm tone of his woodblocks, using a hand - coloring technique: all the wooden blocks had to be colored one after the other by a team of practitioners, in their nuances, according to a scheme established by the painter and repeated in each volume. Loose as issued in half parchment wrappers, chemise and slipcase. Text selection by A. Lefranc, illustrations printed by Andre Derain and Roger Lacourière. Light foxing at the margin, chemise in poor condition . Ref : The Artists and the Book 81.

Description
Budapest: Franklin-Tarsulat Nyomdaja, 1877. About very good.. x,[1],220pp. Original russet cloth stamped in black and gilt, a.e.g. Light soiling and wear, corners bumped. Text toned but clean. Szenger was a Hungarian doctor serving in the Medical Corps of Maximilian I's army in Mexico. He witnessed first-hand, therefore, the French intervention in Mexico, including Maximilian's execution. The present work is his account of his travels in Mexico. The title roughly translates as "The Highland of Mexico in Respect to Physiology and Pathology," which, in addition to being an interesting and unusual travel narrative, serves as an odd sort of medical work. Rare on the market and especially uncommon in American institutions. We locate copies at Yale Medical, Vanderbilt University, and the University of Arizona, as well as several copies in Hungary. An important eyewitness account of Maximilian's brief career as the Emperor of Mexico.

[N.p., 1937. Very good.. [3],53pp., rectos only, including fifty-nine vernacular sepia-toned photographs measuring 2.5 x 3.5 inches and a few maps and manuscript diagrams. Typed self wrappers, brad-bound. Minor creasing and dust-soiling to wrappers. Clean internally. A profusely illustrated report, with a few hand-drawn diagrams and numerous manuscript emendations, focused on various U.S. Army installations in the American Southeast. The author, Major George H. Schumacher of the U.S. Army's Quartermaster Corps, visited several Army bases and other posts in Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama, and Georgia in the Spring of 1937. His report includes inspection details, notes on personnel, recommended repairs, and other information for each site he visited on his 3,065-mile tour, beginning with Fort Barrancas and Key West in Florida to Fort Moultrie in South Carolina, to Fort Bragg and Raleigh Cemetery in North Carolina, Fort McClellan in Alabama, and ending with a couple of bases in Georgia. The text of the report is supplemented with almost sixty annotated photographs which are interspersed throughout. A sampling of the photographs includes the Bachelor Quarters in Key West, the CCC Camp at Fort Taylor, the St. Augustine Cemetery, a WPA road under construction at Fort Moultrie, various buildings at Fort Bragg and the Raleigh Cemetery, a road and bridge at Fort McClellan, and various features at Georgia forts Screven and Oglethorpe. A unique production, and an informative assessment of 1930s Army installation in the American South and Southeast.

Spine faded as often with this book, a few scuffs to cloth, some minor soiling to slipcase
Description
New York: The Library Fellows at the Whitney Museum of American Art [by Michael and Winifred Bixler Press and Letter Foundry], 1991. Spine faded as often with this book, a few scuffs to cloth, some minor soiling to slipcase. Oblong folio (32.9x42 cm; 13x16½ inches). Beautifully printed in letterpress. [16] pages With 9 mounted chromogenic photographic prints by Tina Barney: 27.7 x3 5.9 cm (11x14¼"). Original turquoise three quarter morocco over cloth; endpapers designed by Sage Reynolds; slipcase. One of an edition limited to 175 copies signed by Barney and Howe. An artist book collaboration between American playwright Tina Howe and American photographer Tina Barney produced as a benefit for the library of the Whitney Museum. An edition in the Artists and Writers Series. The text is a four-person dialogue written by Tina Howe, set on an Atlantic Coast beach in late August. The large-format images manipulate depth of field, and capture people on or around the beach, making the series a vibrant, though haunting, counterpoint to Howe's clipped dialogue. It also delights in capturing late 1980s style and fashion, from young children through the elderly. A beautiful, tactilely rich book.

Wright transactions of first blood clotting conference (New York 1948), JT Edsell, preservation of formed elements and proteins of the blood, JT Edsall unclassified manuscript on large asymmetrical molecules distributed to US government and military laboratories (100 copies); Vol. VIII, 1950-1951, 63 offprints including Lewis Barness on nephrotic syndrome, historical sketch of the Department of Physical Chemistry, Harvard Medical School 1920-1950; Vol. IX, 1952-1955, 66 offprints including A discussion on the structure of proteins with contributions by WT Astbury, Robert Corey, Linus Pauling, John Randall, William Bragg, Max Perutz, John Bernal, John Edsall. JOHN TILESTON EDSALL (1902 - 2002) was an early protein scientist, who contributed significantly to the understanding of the hydrophobic interaction. For more than half of the twentieth century John T. Edsall, class of 1923, was a guiding spirit and constant contributor to the rise of biochemistry at Harvard and in the world through his research, teaching, mentoring, writing, editing and moral influence. Following graduation from Harvard College he entered Harvard Medical School, but anticipating an academic career, he then spent two years studying biochemistry at Cambridge University before returning to Harvard for a MD degree in 1928. Edsall's devotion to teaching was extraordinary. In 1928 he became a Tutor in the newly formed concentration of Biochemical Sciences and continued in this role for forty years, serving as Head Tutor for more than twenty years. In 1954 he moved to the Biological Laboratories. While he found the last two years of medical school disappointing he compensated by joining Edwin J. Cohn's Department of Physical Chemistry where some of the earliest studies on protein physical chemistry were underway. Thus began a long research career devoted to proteins and their constituent amino acids. His early work contributed mightily to establishing proteins as uniquely structured large molecules deserving the same intense study that had become commonplace in the chemistry of small molecules. John's early studies dealt with the size and shape of the principal proteins in muscle and blood, their states of ionization, the role of constituent polar and hydrophobic amino acids in stabilizing protein structure and the vital role of ever-present water. He was the first to describe the phenomenon that is the central feature of hydrophobic interactions. No one contributed more than Edsall to the establishment of high standards and effective communication in protein science. In 1944 he co-founded Advances in Protein Chemistry, an annual cutting-edge review written by experts. He continued as editor for fifty years leaving a vast legacy of judicious selection and authoritative presentations. He further left his imprint on the scientific literature in biochemistry by editing the Journal of Biological Chemistry, the leading publication in the field, for a decade. EDWIN JOSEPH COHN (1892-1953) was a protein scientist. A graduate of the University of Chicago [1914, PhD 1917], he made important advances in the physical chemistry of proteins. In 1928, as group leader at Harvard Medical School, Cohn was able to concentrate, by a factor of 50 to 100 times, the vital factor in raw liver juice which had been shown by Minot and Murphy to be the only known specific treatment for pernicious anemia. Cohn's contribution allowed practical treatment of this previously incurable and fatal illness, for the next 20 years. Cohn became famous for his work on blood fractionation during World War II. In particular, he worked out the techniques for isolating the serum albumin fraction of blood plasma, which is essential for maintaining the osmotic pressure in the blood vessels. Transfusions with purified albumin on the battlefield rescued thousands of soldiers from shock. After the war, Cohn worked to develop systems by which every component of donated blood would be used, so that nothing would be wasted.

Description
Lisbon: press of the Royal Academy of Sciences, 1787. Narrow 4to (209 x 118 mm). [8], xiii, [3], 175 pages. Title-leaf (fol. [*2]) present in duplicate. Folding engraved plate of a mechanical silk loom; titles with woodcut arms of the Portuguese Royal Academy of Sciences, woodcut and typographic headpieces (occasional slight discoloration, small wormtrack in the folding plate). Contemporary cat’s-paw polished sheep, covers with gilt border, spine in six gold-tooled compartments, the second gilt lettered, edges gilt and gauffered (recased, endpapers renewed, defect in top spine compartment, a dozen small wormholes). Provenance: António Romão dos Passos (1866-1951), signature in ink (Antonio Passos / agronomo or Anto R. Passos) scrawled across both titles, the first with price note, and on six text leaves. *** Only edition of a comprehensive overview of the Portuguese silk industry, by the judicial magistrate of the Moncorvo district and author of several works on political economy and history of law. José Antonio de Sá (d. 1819), a native of Bragança, was an important proponent of modernization of the industry, and later served as director of the Royal Silk Factory (Real Fábrica das Sedas), founded in 1802 in Lisbon. He was one of the earliest members of the Academia Real das Sciencias of Lisbon. Silkworms were raised in Portugal as early as the 13th century. Sericulture and silk production were concentrated in the northeastern province of Trás-os-Montes, its largest center being the city of Bragança, which from the 15th to 17th century was known throughout Europe for its luxurious velvets. Because of the lack of government support for industry, frequent wars, and above all the persecutions of the Inquisition, which decimated an industry in all sectors of which Jews or converted Jews (cristãos-novos) played a major role, Portuguese silk production suffered from intermittent crises and was even periodically decimated. Starting in the 1770s, efforts to revive the industry began to have an effect: “By the end of the 18th century, the Trás-os-Montes silk industry had dragged itself out of the crisis that had begun in 1750-1755, coinciding with the last incursion of the Inquisition into Bragança, and embarked upon a period of great development, accompanying the industrial expansion that was then taking place, not only in that particular region, but throughout the Portuguese kingdom. After the Inquisition’s systematic persecution of businessmen, weavers and throwers had finally come to an end, the continuity and expansion of the silk industry seemed to be a viable prospect. In the last two decades of the 18th century, a remarkable process of modernization took place thanks to the efforts of the businessmen involved in this economic activity, such as António José Lopes Fernandes, who installed 200 silk looms in Bragança, magistrates such as José António de Sá and Pereira de Barros, and politicians such as Martinho de Melo e Castro and Rodrigo de Sousa Coutinho, the latter being the Portuguese ambassador to Piedmont, Italy. These efforts included the adoption of Piedmontese methods and techniques (namely the organzine mill and the spinning-jenny), the most advanced ones at that time in Europe, in an operation led by experts coming to Portugal from that Italian region.” (Sousa, p. 6) Sá’s work is in three parts. The first part comprises an overview of the history of silk production, starting with Antiquity, and summaries of the industry and government policies toward it in other countries, followed by a detailed recommendation, with responses to projected objections, that the Portuguese government undertake a campaign to plant mulberry trees and promote the industry generally. Part two is a treatise on the silkworm, and part three a technical survey of “the art of silk spinning.” Explained in the text (pp. 142-148) is the letter- and number-keyed engraving of a rather fanciful machine, showing a vat for softening the cocoons heating on the left, from which a thread-unwinding mechanism feeds a loom on the right. The reason for the duplicated title-leaf in this copy is not clear. Perhaps one functioned as an upper wrapper — but as both titles are preceded by a half-title that appears unlikely. The book collector Antonio Romão dos Passos (b. February 28, 1866) was an engineer and agronomist. Other books from his library, all on practical subjects, are recorded; four are digitized by the Biblioteca Nacional Digital de Portugal. One, a treatise on hemp, has a similar indelicately scrawled signature across the title. OCLC gives six US locations. Innocencio, Diccionario bibliographico portuguez IV: 246, no. 2658; Kress, Luso-Brazilian Economic Literature Before 1850, p. 4. Cf. F. Sousa, “The Silk Industry In Trás-Os-Montes During The Ancient Regime,” E Journal of Portuguese History, Vol. 3, no. 2, Winter 2005 (digitized).

In doing so, it helped to solidify the identity and importance of New Mexican food as a distinct culinary tradition. The first edition is very uncommon in the market, especially in jacket. Description
New York: The Architectural Book Publishing Co., 1923. First edition Folio, 212 pages, bound in original blue cloth with gilt spine titles. A most impressive study of the architectural firm of Mellor, Meigs & Howe, with photographic images as well as architectural drawings of some of their most important commissions. The preface was written by Owen Wister in praise of the mission of the architects of this prestigious concern to allow "life to determine the character of a building". This particular volume is concerned primarily with residential and farm buildings displaying the firm's dedication to standing against the commercialization of art and architecture by applying the deepest philosophical and aesthetic elements of the Arts and Crafts movement. Indeed, the influence of the British architectural principles seen in the work of Bailey Scott, Philip Webb and others is in keen evidence. The book retains its original dust wrapper, exhibiting some light wear but complete and bright. This title has been reprinted but the new version is a sad representative of this substantial, handsome work. Quite scarce in this condition.

1 p.l., 12 pp. 8vo (218 x 140 mm.), mid-19th century marbled boards (spine worn), spine gilt, uncut. Paris: Metzinger & Regnault-Delalande, 1813. A very rare auction catalogue for the sale of Cossé-Brissac (1746-1813), count of the Empire, chamberlain to Napoleon’s mother, and politician. His remains were placed in the Pantheon. This was a mixed sale of paintings, drawings, sculpture, prints, and ceramics. 42 lots. It details 24 lots of paintings by Brueghel the Elder, Champaigne, Maratti, Rembrandt, Teniers, ter Borch, Vermeer, S. Vouet, Ph. Wouwerman, etc. Each entry provides a concise description, technical notes, and measurements. In good condition, internally fine; WorldCat and the Getty Provenance Index locate no copy in North America. With the amusing engraved bookplate of [H]enry [Pannier] (1853-1935), the Parisian art dealer and collector of early art auction catalogues, on front paste-down, and stamp of the Bibliothèque Heim on verso of half-title. ❧ Lugt 8457.

Description
[ca 1895]. Oblong 8vo (19 cm) photo album, flexible blue-green cloth. 21 bromide print photos (4.5" x 6.5"), 3 laid-in photos ( 2.5" x 3"), 1 b&w laid-in postcard (3.5" x 5.5"). A photo album documenting a hunting trip in the North Woods of Maine, beginning with a view of Mount Kineo and the Kineo House with its attendant buildings on Moosehead Lake. Subjects captured include a group of hunters posed on a porch with a uniformed man, perhaps at a Kineo cottage; campsite scenes where hunters wash up, smoke, or play cards; hunters proudly posing with bagged deer throughout the album and and in photos laid-in, deer lying on the ground after the kill and hanging in groups from pole structures; water scenes, including one with canoeing hunters; a photo of a bird perched on a hanging deer, etc. An unrelated laid-in postcard of a farmhouse is entitled "Link View. Orono, Maine". A nice album evoking the Golden Age of sporting in Maine. CONDITION: Good, tonality of photos generally good, most photos with some spotting, one leaf detached.

Description
Salt Lake City: [Deseret News Company, 1886. First Edition. 19pp. Octavo [21 cm] About very good. Lacks wrappers. An open letter by the First Presidency that was sent out to be read at a General Conferences in Provo, instead of in person at the Tabernacle due to the Polygamy raids, than be conducted by federal marshals throughout the Territory, to locate and arrest known bigamists. In this short work Taylor writes of the challenges the Church was facing due to anti-polygamy legislation and the importance of continuing the practice of plural marriage. "The cry of polygamy has made a good battle cry: this has called the fanatical element into line; but underneath and above this question of polygamy, and completely enveloping it, has been the design to destroy our rights as citizens, to take away from us our liberties under the Constitution and the laws, and to obtain the political control of our country, so that, being as voiceless in the affairs of government as the Indians or Chinese, we could be taxed and plundered with impunity, and be lorded over by a set of political harpies who would revel and fatten at our expense." John Taylor (1808 - 1887) was third president of the LDS Church from 1880 to 1887. He is the first and so far only president of the LDS Church to have been born outside the United States. He was with Joseph Smith when he was murdered at the Carthage Jail and led the Church during the Polygamy raid period. Flake/Draper 1662.

Description
New York: Grove Press, Inc.. Near Fine. 1981 (c.1972). 1st Evergreen Edition. Softcover. [minor wear only to book, but there is a small hole punched in the front cover]. Trade PB (B&W photographs) An endlessly fascinating read-through of the correspondence files of the legendary producer of GONE WITH THE WIND and other classics (and an occasional non-classic) -- albeit, as editor Behlmer explains in his foreword, presenting "a rather one-sided case, with no opportunity for the several victims of Selznick's unhappiness or, in some instances, wrath, to offer rebuttals or countercharges." The selection of memos -- from among two thousand file boxes of Selznick's papers -- was a monumental task, and although it was by necessity a highly selective process, at the end you feel like you've gotten a pretty comprehensive picture of DOS -- "at times pontificating and overly fussy," as the editor allows, but "also brilliant, knowledgeable, tasteful, painstaking, and possessed by what he was doing." The book itself was something of a landmark of cinema scholarship: never before had a book of film history (or biography) been presented as an assemblage of primary documents, and it's not saying too much to state that it raised the bar for future film historians' excavation of such archives. Quite fittingly included in the important bibliography "100 Books on Hollywood & the Movies." (xx) .
