Description
1931. ZWART, Piet. Monografieën over filmkunst. Edited by C.J. Graadt van Roggen. 10 vols. 4to, 218 x 170 mm., bound in original illustrated wrappers in a new cloth folding box. Rotterdam: Brusse, 1931-1933. A complete set of this legendary film magazine with brilliantly designed covers by Piet Zwart. "Zwart employed images of film-strips, movie cameras, and projectors, formal devices such as multiple exposures and overprinting, and frames for slapstick comedy to documentary films. He therefore summarized the cinematic and photographic ideas that influenced avant-garde page design during the 1920s and 1930s." The series consists of: 1. Het Linnen Venster, by C.J. Graadt van Roggen; 2. Dertig Jaar Film, by L.J. Jordaan; 3. Nederlandsche Filmkunst, by Henrik Scholte; 4. Russische Filmkunst, by Th.B.F. Hoyer; 5. Duitsche Filmkunst, by Simon Koster; 6. Fransche Filmkunst, by Elisabeth de Roos; 7. Amerikaansche Filmkunst, by J. F. Otten; 8. De Absolute Film, by Menno ter Braak; 9. De Komische Film, by Constant van Wessem; 10. De Geluidsfilm, by Lou Lichtveld. Most sets have since been bound into two volumes with some trimming to the covers, the present set remains unbound thus the covers are untrimmed. The spines and edges have a bit of wear with some loss, however, rare in this state. Andel 404, 405, 406.

Description
[Pittsburgh: 1924]. Octavo. Staple-bound, glazed printed wrappers; 7,[1]pp. Gentle external wear; Very Good. The Morgan Community House, a church-sponsored social welfare mission in Pittsburgh's Hill District, was active from 1919 to 1925. This fundraising prospectus is essentially a collection of brief case studies culled from the Settlement's annual report, most being portraits of distressed families and youth being rescued through the staffs' intervention - for example: "A woman having been very badly treated by her husband in Virginia, ran away. Two years later she married a man in Pittsburgh. Was finally located here and arrested to be taken back to Virginia....we were notified, visited her in jail...secured a lawyer and when the case was called she was paroled to Morgan House...her lawyer secured her a divorce from the first [husband]...she is now happily married to her second husband and is keeping house." Not located in OCLC, nor do we find any other publications from this author or organization.

Map of Madagascar drawn by M Robert, translated Joseph Trapp. Second English edition which was was preceded by the 1792 edition.Published in English translation in 1793, this was the first study of Madagascar by a European. A member of the Académie des Sciences, Alexis-Marie de Rochon (1741-1817) was a distinguished French physicist, astronomer and traveller. He was involved in scientific voyages of discovery in the 1770s, conducting a hydrographic survey of the Indian Ocean. The present account was intended to show the advantages of French settlement in Madagascar and includes details of geography, anthropology and agriculture. In discussing cocoa and sugar, Rochon outlines the potential advantages of steam engines in sugar factories. He also provides an exploration history of the region and an interesting account of colonial leaders, notably Maurice Benyovszky (1746-86), the explorer-adventurer who was appointed governor of Madagascar by Louis XV. The work also includes a 'Memoir of the Chinese Trade', which details the many products traded between Europe and China in the late eighteenth century.Condition:Respined with the original spine laid on, old roman numeral to front paste down else a very good copy.

Description
1920. Photo album documenting American travel through Japan during the interwar period, preserving extensive visual evidence of Japanese urban life, maritime culture, civilian labor, and American naval presence during the decades preceding the Second World War. The photographs capture Japan at a moment of accelerating modernization and rising nationalism while also recording ordinary daily life in cities, ports, and rural communities encountered by foreign visitors traveling through the country. The material documents cross-cultural travel and maritime exchange systems through photographs of harbor infrastructure, naval vessels, ceremonial gatherings, transportation networks, and civilian street scenes, revealing how Americans visually interpreted Japan during an era of expanding Pacific diplomacy and naval projection. The album is particularly significant for its sustained attention to everyday Japanese life beyond formal tourist monuments, including laborers, women, children, transportation workers, and commercial activity in both urban and coastal settings. Original string-bound black paper photograph album containing 214 silver gelatin photographs mounted with corner tabs, album measuring approximately 7 x 10 inches, with most photographs approximately 2 x 2.75 inches. A page titled "JAPAN" introduces the principal section of the album, and several photographs are captioned with locations including Kobe and the Mirim Boat Club, indicating travel along Japan's southern and central coastal regions. Images depict a broad range of Japanese subjects including women in kimono, rikisha drivers, merchants, laborers, children, fishermen, and groups gathered in marketplaces and along harbor districts. Numerous photographs portray Japanese architecture, shrines, gardens, bridges, terraced landscapes, village pathways, and waterfront townscapes. Maritime scenes occupy a substantial portion of the album and include American naval vessels, cargo steamers, docked battleships, traditional Japanese sailing craft, harbor labor, and ships viewed both at sea and in port. Several photographs show uniformed American sailors assembled in parade formation alongside Japanese civic or military gatherings, suggesting an official or semi-official visit connected to naval diplomacy, Pacific fleet activity, or interwar goodwill missions. Additional images depict public ceremonies, mass gatherings, processions, and uniformed Japanese officers or youth groups, reflecting civic and military culture during the interwar years. The photographs alternate between posed portraits and candid street scenes, with many emphasizing interactions between foreign visitors and local residents. The album documents Japan during a period of profound social and political transformation as the nation expanded industrially and militarily while remaining a major destination for American diplomatic, commercial, and naval visitors in the Pacific. Unlike commercially produced tourist albums emphasizing only temples or scenic landmarks, this vernacular compilation preserves a broader visual record of daily life and maritime activity, including working people, transportation systems, harbor economies, and informal social encounters. The recurring presence of American naval imagery situates the album within the larger history of interwar Pacific relations prior to the deterioration of U.S.-Japanese relations in the late 1930s. Minor wear to several photographs and expected album handling wear; images remain clear and well preserved overall. Very good condition. A substantial and visually detailed record of interwar Japan through the perspective of an American traveler, combining documentary, maritime, and cross-cultural historical significance.
