Description
One full-page woodcut. 30 folding leaves. 8vo (192 x 138 mm.), orig. wrappers, manuscript title-slip on upper cover, new stitching. [Edo]: on final leaf [Matsue Ichirōbei 松会市郎兵衛], “on a good day in July 1664.” First illustrated edition of “the first culinary book [in Japan] written for an audience other than hōchōnin [professional chefs who created meals for the ruling elite].”–Rath, p. 57. The first edition, which was unillustrated, appeared in 1643 and is a well-known rarity; our edition is equally rare. The anonymous author, who in the Postscript is described as having written this book in Sayama in Musashi province (today’s Saitama Prefecture), wrote this work for a wide readership, with a table of contents. It marked the beginning of a boom in culinary books written for a popular audience. In the table of contents, foods are divided into 20 categories: 1-7 are names of dishes sorted by their general ingredients (many kinds ocean fish, freshwater fish, 18 varieties of birds, vegetables, etc.), and 8-20 are detailed recipes organized by preparation method (braising, raw, broiling, soups, cooking with sake, noodles, confectionaries, tea, etc.). For a detailed discussion of the text and this edition, see Laura Moretti, Pleasure in Profit (New York: 2020), pp. 158-64. The fine woodcut, very much in the style of Hishikawa Moronobu 菱川師宣, depicts a kitchen scene with one man cutting up a fish, another grilling a whole fish, and two women busy preparing drinks and food to be carried into the dining area. The publisher, Matsue, was one of the two most active publishers in Edo in the 1660s. Nice copy, with minor worming. ❧ Eric C. Rath, Food and Fantasy in Early Modern Japan (Berkeley: 2010), pp. 57-59, 85, 93, 94, 102-03, 105, 108-09, 116, 123, 167-68, 170, & 220 note 6.

Description
[St. Augustine, FL, 1862. Narrow folio broadsheet, 13 x 5 1/2 inches, printed on an army field press, on coarse paper, in entirely original condition. Printed in various sizes and styles of type. Recto advertises the various "events" occurring during the celebration, verso prints the text of an "Oration / Delivered at St. Augustine, Fla., July 4, 1862, by / Proffssor [sic] Twistemstraighter," which begins "Fellow Citizens, Women and Children, White and Black …" and is followed by 60 lines of text. Old folds, a few nicks along the edges, not affecting text, a bit of rubbing to a few words, and toning to the upper portion of the leaf, but all legible. OCLC locates one copy (New Hampshire). Not in Servies. Not in Hummel. Apparently not in the NUC or the AAS on-line catalog. This parody of a Fourth of July parade was a New England tradition. Known as the "Horribles Parades," spoofing one of the country's oldest military organizations, the Massachusetts "Ancient and Honorable (Horribles) Artillery Company,” they became part of many conventional celebrations of the holiday, beginning in the mid 19th century. The advertisements for the parades offered improbable activities and events and were full of satire and puns. This advertising sheet promised that the procession would be headed by "the Celebrated Knockemhigherthanakite Band! under the direction of Herr Sawmynoseoff, and will perform a Grand Potpieowrone on the Plaza ..." to be followed by a dress parade of the "Highlandblowfisticators," an oration, and games of "Catching the Greased Pig ... [etc.]" which will commence "as soon as the grounds in the rear of the Fort can be cleared of the 'Mushrooms.'" The oration on the verso gave a brief, somewhat fractured history of the United States' triumphs over adversities, from colonial times up through the secession of the South from the Union: "So propel, that if we live and survive the perils of fleas and mosquitos, we can return to Old Abe, and say, 'big Chief of the Columbians, the children of the Winnepisseogee left their wigwams to defend the country of the brave. We went to the land of Black Hawk and Osceola, and the Secesh fled …" (#60238) The Fourth New Hampshire Regiment Volunteers participated in the expedition to Port Royal, South Carolina in the fall of 1861, then took part in the expedition to Florida. It was part of the Union forces occupying St. Augustine, and stationed there from April 9 until September, 1862. Under the command of Col. Louis Bell, martial law was instituted and the city was secured. In relative safety, the troops were able to engage in the likes of the light-hearted activities of the Horribles Parade.

Description
1970. [Transportation][Urbanization] Photographic court exhibits of a Connecticut freeway truck rollover and cargo spill, prepared for federal court proceedings in 1970, documenting accident investigation, scene control, and roadway recovery operating in the infrastructure of interstate freight transport. An official photographic record of the immediate aftermath on a wet multi lane roadway, where police, recovery personnel, overturned equipment, and scattered cargo appear as components of a formal evidentiary process, with stamps and notations on versos for use as evidentiary exhibits in court. Direct visual evidence of transportation and logistics failure inside a controlled highway environment, with the federal exhibit markings establishing the photographs as instruments of legal and forensic reconstruction. Legal Photo archive of 9 silver gelatin photographs, each measuring between 5" x 7.5" and 8" x 9.5". Connecticut, 1967. The photographs move from wide roadway views to closer investigative and recovery scenes, creating a clear sequence of official documentation. Several images show an overturned truck on a rain slicked freeway with tires exposed upward, cargo strewn across lanes and shoulder, and standing water on the pavement. Police officers and other men in work clothing examine the wreck at close range; one image isolates lower body detail beside the damaged vehicle, while others place officials near the truck in discussion or inspection. Wider views show controlled traffic space, overhead directional signs, lane markings, bridge rails, stopped vehicles, and groups of onlookers or responders distributed across the scene, embedding the accident within a broader highway system rather than isolating the damaged truck alone. Verso stamps read "U.S. District Court, District of Conn.," with "Exhibit," "Case No. 1287," "Full Exhibit," and date stamp "OCT 27 1970," confirming formal evidentiary use in court. One pen notation on verso reads "Case # X 56085 / Dec. 8, 67", likely the date of the accident. The photograph archive documents a failure of high volume truck freight, limited access highways, and expanding dependence on rapid roadway clearance given the massive post-war urban development and growing supply chain needs in the mid-20th century. These photographs show not only collision damage but the procedural chain that followed stress in the system: official inspection, controlled access to the scene, physical recovery of vehicle and cargo, and visual recording sufficient for federal litigation. Primary evidence of how transportation infrastructure, legal procedure, and accident recovery intersect, with each image serving both documentary and forensic purposes. Minor chipping and creasing at margins, some closed tears at edges; otherwise good condition. The federal court stamp, exhibit language, and sequential scene coverage make the group a strong piece of evidence for the history of transportation systems, accident investigation, and roadway recovery procedure.

Description
Profiteering from the Indian trade in Indiana – Pennsylvania emigrant's letter, 1834. folio, two pages, plus stamp-less address leaf, in very good, clean and legible condition. Ochnig Bird, then 21 years old had just moved from Pennsylvania to Indiana, traveling a thousand miles, having seen "a grate many places", some "quite sickly", but was now in "a first rate place for merchandising… on the Wabash River where the Indiana and Erie Canal is progressing." He had been working on the Canal as an Engineer, but hoped to convince Pettibone to come join him as a business partner, to "speculate in Trade or in Land, there is a going to be some first rate lands sold here soon and those who have the Change, have the first opportunity, and the Trade from the Indians is Good in this Country. The Miami Indians… draw from Government every year $ 25,000 which all comes around threw the hands of the Merchants for Goods at a double profit… The Indians "- of the Miami and Pottawattomi tribes are as thick as white men here … and the way merchants make Change out of them is a caution." Both Bird and his friend, Pettibone, went on to achieve success in life, but not as business partners. Pettibone remained in Pennsylvania as partner in his father-in-law's store; he went on to become a railroad executive and industrialist. Bird remained in Indiana, working as engineer and railroad builder in Fort Wayne, then going into politics; he served in the state legislature before and after the Civil War, when, as a Democratic State Senator, he refused to vote for the amendment to the US Constitution giving freed slaves the right to vote.
