Description
1907. EARLY 1900s OJIBWE OR CHIPPEWA SUEDE BEADED PILLOW Ojibwa or Chippewa brown suede satchel or pillow, with beadwork design, approx 15x15", probably about 1907. It has wear and some fragility, but is otherwise mostly intact, with some of loose pieces of fringe and with complete beadwork. This Native American artifact was collected by a Methodist minister, Robert Oaten(born 1870), who was a circuit preacher in the area around Duluth MN in the early 1900s serving local communities of the Ojibwa and Chippewa nations. Root and his wife also traveled in the US Southwest where they collected Native American crafts. These items were passed to their children in the 1930s and later. Shelved Room J. 1408654.
