Description
New York: Peter Smith [Currier & Ives], 1848. Folio lithograph broadside, oblong 14" x 19." Copyright information in manuscript at blank lower margin. Mounted to a thin board [chip at top right corner of board], light dusting. Very Good. Though little known today, Cass was a leader of the Democratic Party for thirty years, its 1848 presidential candidate, and the author of the Popular Sovereignty Doctrine, later taken up by Stephen A. Douglas. Cass's resume was impressive indeed: Veteran of the War of 1812, Governor of the Michigan Territory, U.S. Senator from Michigan, Secretary of War, Secretary of State, Ambassador to France. Ironically, he would lose the 1848 election to a political cypher, the Whig Zachary Taylor. Cass's long public career opened a pandora's box of opportunities to skewer him, as in this rare broadside. As Minister to France in 1837-1838, Cass is depicted bowing obsequiously to Louis Phillipe, King of France. Genuflecting to Royals was, of course, frowned upon in America's democratic society. To make matters worse, Cass displays the universally-despised trait of hypocrisy when, King Louis having been deposed in 1848, Cass shuns him. Weitenkampf 98. Not in Reilly. OCLC 1136575034 [1- AAS] as of August 2025.

Description
Boston: Green and Russell, 1758. [5], 10-110, [2 blanks] pp. Stitched in contemporary marbled wrappers [spine wrapper shorn and loosening]. Contemporary signature of 'Francis Green' on verso of front wrapper. Light wear, lower corners turned, else Very Good. Though styled the Seventh Edition, this is the "first American edition of this enormously popular satire on luxury" [Jenkins]. It was first published in London in the previous year. Brown examines the effects of trade and exorbitant wealth on the social order, and issues a severe critique of British society, fearing that England's "Spirit of Liberty" is in danger of extinction, not from external sources, but "because the Enemy is within." The "unbounded License" of English society, and the "ruling manners of our times," threaten its ruin, and the downfall as well of "the Spirit of Humanity" and "the civil Administration of justice." Americans, increasingly attracted to the ideology of self-government and political and civil liberty, doubtless paid close attention to Brown's message. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. Evans 8094. III Jenkins EARLY AMERICAN IMPRINTS 142. ESTC W32073.

Description
Ohio, 1918. Silver gelatin photograph in glass-fronted frame, image measures 24 ¼ x 6 ⅞ inches. Matted and framed, not examined out of frame. The 317th Engineer’s Band was a part of the 317th Engineer Regiment, an element of the 92nd Division, which was composed of over 15,000 African-American soldiers from across the country. The 92nd was one of two African-American regiments to fight in the war, the other being the 93rd, and was unique in that it was under the command of the United States. The 317th Engineer Regiment was organized in November 1917 at Camp Sherman, Ohio, several months before this photograph was taken, and saw action in Europe as part of the 92nd. Camp Sherman was the third largest training camp in the country at the time, with over 2,000 buildings capable of housing 40,000 men and 12,000 horses. As well as being the training site for units of the 92nd (also known as the Buffalo Division), it served as the training site entire 83rd, 84th, 95th and 96th divisions. It later became a trade school. The 317th Engineer’s Band performed locally around Chillicothe and at other military functions, eventually becoming known, according to a contemporary newspaper account, as one of the best bands in the army. They traveled to Indianapolis to perform in March of 1918. A New York Times article from 1918 mentions them briefly and describes them as ‘famous,’ but does not elaborate. They performed at the ‘Colored Club’ in Chillicothe, a social club for African-American servicemen in a converted hotel. We find no other record of this image.

Description
Chilocco, Ok: Printing Department, Chilocco Agricultural School, 1946. Original printed wrappers. Minimal wear. Near fine. A seemingly-unrecorded program for a patriotic "Pageant" performed by the students at the Chilocco Agricultural School in Oklahoma, put on "in memory and recognition of the splendid record made by all of our men as well as women who entered the various branches of the armed forces during World War II." The program was intended to honor specifically "the 180th Infantry, 45th Division, which was an old Oklahoma National Guard Unit composed solely of Chilocco present and past students." The pageant consisted of five themed episodes with narration by a junior year student, songs, a pipe smoking ceremony, "Indian Dances," other types of dances, scenes depicting the flag raising on Iwo Jima and other events, and so forth. The performance concluded with "The Star Spangled Banner." We could locate no other copies of this interesting program from Chilocco celebrating victory in World War II just the year after the war ended.

NANCY REAGAN (1921-2016). Reagan was First Lady.ALAN KRANOWITZ (1941-2002). Kranowitz was a legislative official and lobbyist who worked most closely with the Reagan administration.TLS. 1pg. June 11, 2002. Office of Nancy Reagan. A typed letter signed Nancy Reagan, sending condolences to the widow of Alan Kranowitz: Ronnie and I were so sorry to learn of Alans death recently. Although there are certainly no words to ease the pain at this difficult time, we want you to know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. We know that losing Alan is an incredibly painful reality. But we hope that in time your fond memories of him will bring you peace. He was a great patriot whose service to our country went beyond the call of duty. Alans service as my husbands chief Congressional liaison helped further his second term legislative agenda. Ronnie joins me in sending our deepest condolences. God bless you and your family. The letter is in fine condition and comes with the original envelope.
