Description
Purcell, 1900. Unmounted gelatin silver prints and one mounted boudoir card, most images measuring 8 x 5 and 7 x 4 ½ inches. Varying levels of fading, else about fine. With gallery stamps of Fenn Gallery, Santa Fe verso. Near Fine. In the years following the Land Run of 1889, which opened land in Indian Territory to Euro-American settlement, professional and amateur photographers alike moved to the region. Their motives varied, with some attempting to document the vanishing indigenous culture and others trying to capitalize on the Euro-American demand for photographs of Native Americans in both traditional and western attire. Some studios would use single sets of props for different tribes. Despite these issues, the images from the period do illuminate the period of acculturation and displacement in the history of the Southern Plains Indians tribes, and also provide a record of the motives of the Euro-American photographers behind the camera. William J. Lenny and William L. Sawyers were photographers working out of Purcell in the years immediately following the land rush. They photographed the tribes on the Kiowa-Comanche-Apache and Wichita-Caddo reservations. Lenny was a field photographer and likely took most of the photographs, while Sawyer managed the studio. Offered here are a very extensive group of photographs taken by the duo - twenty-seven in total - giving a visual record of the Kiowa and other tribes during this period. Some of these images - though not these copies - were included in the Museum of the Great Plains Exhibition In Citizen’s Garb, and we have included their reference numbers where applicable. Overall an uncommonly large group in fine condition, with some fading. From the collection of Forest Fenn, the noted Santa Fe gallerist. 1. Indian Police / Kiowa and Comanches [Supplied Title]. The images shows seven mounted police officers, with the one furthest to the left appearing to be Euro-American. 2. Arko, Captain of the Indian Police (Comanche.) [Supplied Title] Indian police commonly earned $8-$10 per month to work on the reservation, where their duties included expelling intruders, bringing children to the schools, curbing crime and preventing the sale of alcohol. He’s dressed traditionally including a single feather worn as a headdress. [In Citizen’s Garb 32] 3. Chief Tow-Wac-A-Ny and Wives. Wichitas. [Supplied Title]. A portrait of ‘Towacany Jim,’ a famous military scout, posed with a Navajo-style blanket along with his two wives. The women are wearing purchased shoes common in this period. He earned $10 per month as leader of the Indian Police and traveled to Washington, D.C. on diplomatic missions. Fine contrast. 4. Big Tree’s Boy and Girl. Kiowas. [Supplied Title] A portrait of two children of the chief Big Tree. The pair wear traditional dress. Faded. Big Tree. 5. Kiowa Chief. [Supplied Title] A portrait of A’Do-Ette, or Big Tree, the Kiowa chief. Fine contrast. 6. [Portrait of A’Do-Ette] . He wears the same costume used by the photographers for various other tribal leaders, including a large headdress. Faded. 7. Chief Big Tree’s Daughters. (Kiowas.) [Supplied Title] The image shows two girls identified as Alma (left) and Leena (right). Alma wears a dress of dark buckskin. Both girls have beaded bags, known as “Strike-a-Light” bags hanging from belts. 8. Lone Wolf. Kiowa Chief. [Supplied Title] A photograph of Mamay-day-te, or Lone Wolf the Younger, in the same costume used for O’Do-Ette’s portrait and others. Some fading. 9. Photograph of Laura Dunmore, or Laura Pedrick. Dunmore was a graduate of Carlisle School and sister of Chief Aptone. She is pictured here with a parasol, tartan cloth and tinkling cone earrings, providing a striking study in fashion during this period. Fine contrast. 10. Photograph of a Camp Scene in Summer on a Reservation. This scene, perhaps a Kiowa-apache camp, contains a tipi made of canvas instead of hides. A man in an expensive set of purchased clothing sits in the foreground. Excellent contrast. [In Citizens Garb 9] 11. Photograph of a Camp Scene in Summer. A variant of our no. 10, showing the same scene from a different angle. Excellent contrast. 12. Chief Wild Horse [Supplied Title] Title written in ink on margin. A photograph of Kobay-O-Burra, second chief of the Quahadi, who took over principal chieftanship when Parra-o-Coom died in 1874. 13. Photograph of Mamay-Day-Te (Lone Wolf). A variant pose as number 8 with the same dress. 14. Photograph of Five Comanche in Mixed Attire. They have been identified as Pah-do-pony (top left), To-pooh (bottom right), and Big Kiowa (bottom left, brother of Pah-do-pony and Perk-a-Quannard). (In Citizens Garb 14) 15. Apache Papoose [Supplied Title]. A photograph of a child in traditional dress. Faded. 16. Photograph of Four Indigenous Subjects in Mixed Attire. A portrait of a man and three women, the man in a Euro-American style suit and the women in a mix of traditional dress using trade fabrics. Excellent contrast. 17. Portrait of an Unidentified Man. A portrait of a man in heavy fringe, breechcloth and fringed leggings. This was marketed under the name “Big Tree’s Son” in the 1890s and the subject is identified as Kiowa in the In Citizens Garb catalog. [In Citizens Garb 16) 18. Kiowa Squaw and Papoose [Supplied Title]. A photograph of a woman and a child in a studio setting. Very good contrast. 19. Portrait of Zah-Tay or Lizzie Woodward. Zah-Tay appeared in other photographs with her niece and son. 20. Portrait of Cora Caruth. A portrait identified as Cora Caruth, who graduated from an Indian School, perhaps Carlisle, and eventually worked as an interpreter for Wichita at Anadarko. Fine contrast. 21. Portrait of a Man in a Serape. A portrait of a seated man in a serape, or striped Mexican blanket. A breechcloth, legging and moccasins can be seen under the serape. (In Citizens Garb 23) 22. Chief Cat. Kiowa. [Supplied Title] A photograph of Ba’o (Cat) also Goon-Saudle-Te, who wandered from camp in Colorado when he was twelve and was not recovered for five years. Comanches sheltered him. Fine contrast. 23. Kiowas. [Supplied Title] A portrait of Lizzy Woodward, Oliver and her niece posed in Kiowa clothing. Oliver is in a beaded cradleboard, Lizzy’s dress was tied with Tartan cloth, and wears traditional Kiowa moccasins. (In Citizen’s Garb 10) 24. Portrait of Lizzy Woodward, Her Niece and Oliver. A variant of our no. 23, with Oliver and Woodward in different dress. Fine contrast. 25. Portrait of Two Kiowa Girls. Two girls pose, one in buckskin dress decorated in paint. Buckskin would become less frequent. Fading. (In Citizen’s Garb 2) 26. Big Tree’s Papoose. (Kiowa). [Supplied Title]. A portrait of Alma, later known as Mrs. Ahote. Fine contrast. 27. Kiowa Braves. [Supplied Title] A photograph of two young men on horseback. Very good contrast to foreground, slight fading to background. 28. A Young Kiowa Warrior [Supplied Title]. A photograph of Enoch Smokey, later known as Apenguadal, who lived near Verden, Oklahoma. His mother was noted as a beadworker and his horse is fitted with unusually decorative gear. His personal dress includes a hairpipe breastplate and a pelt around his arms. (In Citizens Garb 36) 29. Portrait of a Standing Kiowa Man. He wears the same headdress used in other studio photographs. Some fading. 30. Unidentified Man, Possibly Euro-American, Posed in a Headdress in Studio Setting. This is a mounted image, unlike the others, with the Lenny & Sawyers mount. The subject appears to be Euro-American and wears the same headdress used by the Indigenous subjects in several of the earlier photographs. He holds a prop bow and arrow. An uncommonly large group of images, which in total provide an impressive visual record of this period of forced acculturation and transition in dress.

Description
1940. SOVIET PROPAGANDA. L'novodstvo, khlopkovodstvo i sakharnaya svekla: Tsvetnye tablitsy. [Cultivation of Flax, Cotton, and Sugar Beet: Colorful Tables.] 4, 25, 34 ills. Oblong folio, 335 x 240 mm., in original cloth portfolio. N.p.: Izd. Narkomzema (1940). A handsome piece of unintentional book illustration. While the illustrations are largely botanical in nature, the overall effect is more of an illustrated book than a tedious tome extolling Soviet agricultural prowess. Extremely rare with no listing on OCLC.

Description
1936. DEINEKA, Z. URSS en Construction. La Republique Sovietique de Tchouvachie. (1936 #9). 36 pp. Folio, bound in original wrappers. Moscow: Editions d'Etat des Beaux-Arts, 1936. A fine copy of one of many monographic issues of this landmark periodical, devoted to Tchouvachia. As Martin Parr says "from 1930-1940 URSS en Construction employed the best Soviet photo-journalists and graphic designers. Amongst the photographers were Max Alpert, Arkadi Shaikhet, Georgi Zeima, Boris Ignatovich, Semen Fridland and Georgi Shaikhet. Designers included Nikolai Troshin, El Lissitzky, Sophie Kueppers, Aleksandr Rodchenko and Varvara Stepanova. All the visual strategies of the propaganda photobooks, designed by Lissitzky, Rodchenko and others -- the elaborate photomontages, innovative photography, fold-out pages, transparent overlays and so on -- were developed in URSS en Construction, one of the most beautifully produced magazines of the twentieth century." It was published in Russian, French, English and German. This is the French version. In fine condition. Parr and Badger, The Photobook I, 148-149.

Description
Venice: [Giovanni Tacuino] Ioannis Taciuni de Tridino, 1516. Very good with faults as described.. Folio. [14 ], 168 leaves. 35 column-wide woodcut vignettes in text, numerous woodcut decorated letters. Signatures: a\8 b\6 A-EE\6. Title in gothic type; main text printed in large roman type, surrounded on three sides by commentary in smaller roman type; marginal notes in small roman type. Index on preliminary leaves. Bound in circa c19 re-used plain vellum, with older manuscript text scraped away, discernable but illegible. Title page guarded on inner margin, with two paper repairs on verso; manuscript notes in contemporary hand on blank verso of b6, about half washed away and offset onto A1r. Light water stain in early quires. A1 repaired on verso. Interlinear manuscript notes in contemporary hand in first quire only. Burn hole in C4. Paper repair to verso of D3, Woodcut on T1 inked over but clearly visible. Restorations on the lower corners of numerous leaves with slight loss of text in some cases. References: Sander 486; Essling 1324; BM Italian, p.35; Adams A-1375. Just about 150 years into the Common Era, the African writer Apuleius produced one of the most influential novels ever written, a model for Cervantes, Rabelais, Shakespeare, Salman Rushdie and Angela Carter. The plot surrounds the misfortunes of Lucius, who fumbles around ambitiously with magic spells and accidently turns himself into a donkey. The narrative of Lucius's four-footed travels is interspersed with many other tales, including the story of Cupid and Psyche--one of the first examples in culture of a fairy tale transmitted in written rather than oral form. In the end, Lucius recovers human form through a ritual of religious initiation into the cult of Isis. The book survived, barely, in manuscript (I think it survived due to its pornographic passages, which were probably quite dear to cloistered monks), and was revived in the Renaissance with the commentary of the humanist scholar Filippo Beroaldo, included in this edition of the text, which is only the second printed edition to feature illustrations.

S.-Peterburg (St. Petersburg): Tipografiia Imperatorskoi Akademii Nauk, 1914. First Edition. Good. First edition, part of "Izviestiia Imperatorskoi Akademii Nauk - 1914" series; 10 1/2 x 7 1/2; pp. 727-736; light-brown wraps, printed in black; illustrated with a map and 4 photographs; wraps detached, but present; edges of wraps with small chips and cuts; a few light finger-smudges to page margins, else clean and well-preserved; in about good condition. Stamped to front wrap: "OT AVTORA" (From the Author). The Arctic Expedition of 1913, during which the large archipelago Land of Emperor Nicholas II was discovered (later renamed Severnaya Zemlya), marked the end of the Age of Discovery. The brain and driving force behind the expedition was Inokentii Pavlovich Tolmachev (1872 - 1950) - a scientist and polar explorer, who was, during earlier expeditions, the first to explore the Kuznetsk Alatau mountain range in Southern Siberia, the head of the Khatanga River in the Krasnoyarsk region of Siberia, the Chukotka Peninsula (studying the practicality of the Northern Sea Route), the Zhetysu part of modern day Kazakhstan, and others. In several of his travels, he was accompanied by another famed geologist - Oleg Oskarovich Baklund (1878 - 1958). In 1922, under political pressure, Tolmachev accepted an invitation to work in the US and moved to Pittsburgh, where he taught at the U of Pittsburgh and continued writing. His current, short memorandum, presented together with Oleg Baklund, mentioned the equipment and the management of the expedition (the icebreakers Taimyr and Vaigach, the captain of the operation - B. Vilkitskii, etc.), and described each of the islands, penninsulas, and archipelagos studied, with their coordonates, features, and types of rocks, which were collected. Description
[Mexico City], April 23,1847. Disbound. . Very good; old folds; one word affected by a hole (paper flaw?); looks to have been bound into a larger collection at one time.. Folio broadside meas. appx. 483 x 310 mm. on milled paper. The public printing of Manuel Baranda's (minister in Santa Anna's government) circular to district governors concerning the Mexican defeat at the Battle of Cerro Gordo several days prior. After United States forces captured the port of Veracruz on March 29, 1847, General Winfield Scott advanced towards Mexico City on April 2 by crossing the Rio Antigua. General Antonio López de Santa Anna, commanding Mexican forces in the area, had prepared fortifications at Cerro Gordo, near Xalapa, with more than 8,700 soldiers in a fortified defile. A reconnaissance was sent out to find, or to make, a road by which the rear of the enemy's works might be reached without the need of a frontal assault. This reconnaissance was made under the supervision of Captain Robert E. Lee. The subsequent battle was an overwhelming success for the Americans. The broadside offered here issued by the Mexican government is an acknowledgment of the defeat and an attempt by the Mexican side to buttress public opinion; urging citizens to maintain their fighting spirit. OCLC cites only the Yale copy; absent from Garrett.

Chapman & Hall, 1922. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Volume 1, no.1-4, of the literary magazine edited by Clifford Bax and Austin Osman Spare, bound the publisher's boards. While the boards show a century of wear, they have protected the interior wonderfully, including the original front wrappers of each number and the many lithographs. Bound with no. 4 is the prospectus for Volume 2, announcing the change to a smaller size ('Originally we chose the large page because we wished to give our droughtsmen the best possible conditions. We abandon it now because few people have shelves that are high enough to accommodate folios, and because (according to a well-known authority in the book trade) most people, if a magazine contains large pictures, disregard its literary contents') and offering a defense of the artists and the use of nudes ('It is always the nude that finds people out. Artists often forget that only one person in a thousand can look upon a nude-study as a work of skill and that all the others see it primarily as a challenge to their conceptions of morality'). No 1: 4 pages ads, 1-48, erratum slip between pages 2 and 3; no 2: 4 pages ads, 1-40; no 3: 1-40, advertisement for 'La Grand Ducasse Drolatique, An Apocrypha' by Haydn Mackey, between pages 4 and 5; no 4: Prospectus, 1-40. Wear to the corners and fraying to the head and tail of the spine, with 1 cm tears to the head. 37 x 27 cm. As this is a large book, extra shipping charges may be required.

Description
Boston: Massachusetts Department of Commerce, 1960. Color pictorial folding map. Near Fine. A richly illustrated mid-century Massachusetts travel map by Ernest Dudley Chase, blending tourism promotion with pictorial cartographic design. Issued by the Massachusetts Department of Commerce around 1960, this vibrant folding travel map presents the Bay State as a year-round destination through detailed pictorial cartography by Ernest Dudley Chase. Equal parts guide, souvenir, and promotional artifact, it reflects the optimism and visual clarity of postwar American state tourism design. Physical Description: Color pictorial map printed on a single sheet, folding to approximately 8.5 × 5.5 inches and opening to 33.5 × 21.25 inches (approx. 51 × 82 cm). Illustrated throughout with labeled vignettes, pictorial index to points of interest, mileage table, covered bridge index, beach directory, calendar of events, and state forests and parks. Includes inset map of Greater Boston and extensive color halftone illustrations on the verso. Printed form designation: Form 97, 50M-9-60-928745. Condition: Paper clean and supple with bright color retention throughout. Text and imagery crisp and fully legible. Minimal handling wear and a faint, even age-toning consistent with paper stock. No tears, stains, or losses observed. First state tourism issue. Scarcity Note: Examples survive, but well-preserved copies with strong color and no structural issues are increasingly difficult to locate. Maps by Ernest Dudley Chase remain actively collected within the pictorial cartography field. This map exemplifies Ernest Dudley Chase's mature style, characterized by densely composed yet legible illustrations that balance informational clarity with visual charm. Towns, landmarks, recreational areas, and historic sites are rendered through small, carefully captioned scenes that invite close inspection. The design functions both as a navigational aid and as a narrative portrait of Massachusetts, presenting history, leisure, and modern infrastructure as a cohesive cultural identity. --- Contextual / Historical Significance: Produced during the postwar expansion of domestic tourism, the map reflects a broader effort by American states to promote regional identity through graphic design. Chase's work occupies a key position within mid-20th-century pictorial cartography, bridging traditional mapmaking with illustration and popular graphic culture. Subjects: Massachusetts Tourism, State-Sponsored Travel Promotion, Mid-Century Graphic Design, Illustrated Maps, Ernest Dudley Chase, New England Cultural History, Pictorial Cartography, Travel Ephemera, Americana.
