Description
New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1931 Preface by George Bernard Shaw. First edition, first printing. Signed and inscribed by Hemingway to his cousin Ruth White Lowry on the front free endpaper, with reference to the previous owner, Hemingway bibliographer Captain Louis Henry Cohn: "Dear Ruth: - This is really a 2nd hand book because it was the gift of Captain Louis Henry Cohn the great bibliographer - Pauline didn't like it but Shaw and Terry and Capt. Cohn and Lawrence Stallings all did so you may find something in it - I have not read it - They must have been very sure how great they were or very careful to have kept all the letters and been able to find them - Ernest." Publisher's red cloth, with front board and spine lettered in gilt, red topstain; lacking dust jacket. Very good, with toning to spine and board edges, heavy dimming to spine gilt, some very light scratches to rear board, small House of Books ticket (Captain Cohn's bookshop) to rear pastedown. Overall, a uniquely inscribed copy, with exceptional provenance. From the personal library of Hemingway's cousin, Ruth White Lowry. This book is a collection of correspondence between the great Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw (1856 - 1950) and leading English actress Ellen Terry (1847 - 1928). In 1892, Ellen reached out to Shaw, then a 36-year-old music critic, to get his opinion on the career prospects of a musical protégé of hers. This began a roughly 30-year correspondence between the two, which was marked by flirtation, genuine affection, and Shaw's repeated attempts to lure Ellen away from Henry Irving's productions at Lyceum Theatre to star in theatrical productions of his own work. With praise from its New York Times review: "It represents the very flower of the minds and hearts-the select harvest of sentiment and wit-of two of the most remarkable personages of our generation." Captain Louis Henry Cohn (1889- 1953), born in Brooklyn, New York, earned his military rank by fighting in the French Army during World War I. In 1930, Cohn wrote a letter to Hemingway, asking him for permission to compile a bibliography of his works. Hemingway begrudgingly agreed, and in 1931 the book, A Bibliography of the Works of Ernest Hemingway, was published: in a note from Hemingway to Cohn, which was later included as the frontispiece of the bibliography, Hemingway wrote, "I think it all balls to publish bibliographies of living writers". Later, Cohn and his wife, Marguerite, opened House of Books, a successful bookshop specializing in modern first editions. Under the House of Books imprint, Cohn published an edition of Hemingway's short story "God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen" (1933) limited to 300 numbered copies, and a facsimile of Hemingway's "Bastard Note"-a legal disclaimer page included in the second printing of A Farewell to Arms, with a humorous note to the printer in Hemingway's hand-limited to 93 numbered copies.. Signed. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good.

Description
London: T. Fisher Unwin, 1920 First edition, first printing of the author's first novel. Signed and inscribed by Hilton: "'a first of the first' / from / James Hilton / New Year 1935". Original publisher's cloth. A good copy with light wear, fading and a few small stains to the spine. A scarce title, and seldom found signed. James Hilton wrote and published Catherine Herself at the age of 20 while attending Christ's College in Cambridge as an undergraduate. The novel tells of a young female pianist and her teacher. As with many of his fictitious teachers, including the notable Mr. Chips, Hilton based the teacher character on his own father, who taught for many years. After producing a few successful novels, Hilton was invited to Hollywood to help write the screenplays for film adaptations of his works. He continued to write both screenplays and novels and won awards in both fields, including the Hawthornden Prize in 1934 for his novel Lost Horizon and an Oscar for his 1942 screenplay for Mrs. Miniver.. Inscribed by Author. First Edition. Hard Cover. Good.

Description
London, 1862. Original green cloth. Original account book of 150 pages, 22 lines each, on blue lined paper. Original green cloth, somewhat soiled; the interior in excellent condition. Walpole lived at Strawberry Hill for about fifty years until his death in March, 1797. When he died, the house was entrusted to his cousin, Mrs. Anne Seymour Damer, who, in order to cope with the high expenses of the building, had been given a subsidy of about £2000 a year. Soon she realized that the cost of maintenance was too great, so in 1810 she passed the property over to Walpole’s grand-niece Laura Elizabeth Waldegrave. After Laura died, the heredity passed into the hands of her eldest son John Waldegrave and his wife Frances. In 1842 there was a great sale of some of Walpole’s curious collections of antiquities that lasted 32 days. In 1855 the Countess Waldegrave decided to restore Strawberry Hill and turn it into a palace for great political receptions. She invested about £20,000 a year; during the period from 1856 to 1858, major restorations were made, including new floors, pantry, inside staircase, dining room, gardens, trees and fountains, paintings, drawing rooms, fire places, etc. These are only a few of the entries noted. The account book details the monthly expenses paid out, such as workers’ wages, their names and the amounts paid for the month. (Offered with) Manuscript book apparently listing the prints, books and drawings for a massive extra-illustrated edition of H. Walpole’s letters (?). 4to. In double columns, approximately 7500 listings. A contemporary note states that this volume should come after Volume II, part II. WALDEGRAVE Family GEORGE (1751-1789). 4th Earl of Waldegrave, was a soldier and member of Parliament), descended from James II & James III. In 1782, he married his cousin, Lady Elizabeth Waldegrave. George (1784-1794), 5th Earl of Waldegrave, married Walpole’s niece Laura. John James (1785-1839), 6th Earl of Waldegrave, married Frances Elizabeth Anne Braham, Countess Waldegrave (1774-1856) and they inherited Strawberry Hill. Upon John’s death in 1839, Frances married George Edward (1816-1846), the 7th Earl of Waldegrave. Heavily in debt, they decided to sell Walpole’s treasures at their home in 1842. Frances ultimately came into sole ownership of Strawberry Hill upon his death four years later. Frances Elizabeth Anne, Braham, Countess Waldegrave (1774-1856), daughter of John Braham, considered the greatest English tenor and composer of all times. Noted for his splendid voice and keen business sense, he made his debut at the Royalty Theatre in 1787 with the greatest success. He also produced many of his own operas. He appeared in Covent Gardens and his career was an unbroken succession of triumphs. Frances was married twice more after George Edward’s death, first to Granville Harcourt (d. 1861) and then in 1863 To Chichester Fortescue, later Lord Carlingford (1823-1898). FORTESCUE, Chichester (Lord Carlingford) (1823-98) Son of Chichester Fortescue (d. 1826), he was educated at Christ Church, Oxford where he took a first in classics and won the chancellor’s English essay. From 1847-1874 he was a liberal member of parliament for Louth. He was junior lord of the treasury, under-secretary of state for the colonies, and succeeded Robert Peel as chief secretary for Ireland under Lord Russell. On formation of Gladstone’s first administration he became president of the Board of Trade, later lord privy seal. He shared the burden and the credit of some great reforms following the disestablishment of the Irish Church. John Stuart Mill described his measure as the most important passed by the British parliament since the Roman Catholic Emancipation act. He was raised to the peerage as Lord Carlingford, and succeeded Lord Spencer as president of the council. His wife, Frances Elizabeth Anne, Countess Waldegrave, was a great help in her counsel and encouragement through the most active part of his public career.

1879. PARIS, Ministere de Travaux Publics. Album de statistique graphique. 1879, 1880, 1881, 1882, 1883, 1885, 1887, 1888, 1889, 1890-1891, 1892, 1893, 1895-1896. Each volume contains 12-26 colored plates of informational graphics, many folding. Folio, 330 x 255 mm., publisher's boards. Paris: Imprimerie Nationale, 1879-1896. These splendid volumes were published by the French statistical bureau between 1870 and 1897, and are very much in the style established by Charles Josph Minard. On the outside they appear drab and undistinguished, but on the inside they are alive with a profusion of dazzling coloured charts. They have been called "the finest specimens of French graphic art in the century" (H.G. Funkhuser). All of the volumes are rare, and the series remains largely unknown. Some wear to a couple of bindings, and a few inoffensive library stamps, but otherwise sound.

Description
An intricate little scene comprised of multiple layers of polished and textured paper. A young woman and a sea captain stand hand-in-hand in a clearing. A rifle is laid atop a large rock in the foreground. A rabbit and two birds lay nearby (perhaps having been shot). A small dog looks on while at water's edge. A myriad of greenery with a trellis flanks the border of the image while a large tree with intricate leaves creates the background. Beyond the tree is a soldier with saber in hand. To the sailor's left are evergreens, rock and a snow cap or rapid water flowing between the soldier and the couple. There is a third man lurking to the left (head lacking). The detail on this work is exceptional with individually applied leaves, pearls and ruffles and everything else to be seen. Matted and framed in 7 ¾" x 5 ¾ " gold frame. Few specks for cut work lacking.

Description
London: James Burns, 1847. Very good.. First edition thus of this new selection and translation of sixteen fairy tales, chosen as the "most suited for juvenile reading" - with a small arsenic-green bookplate to front pastedown. Includes "The Red Shoes," "Little Swineherd," "Garden of Paradise," and others. This copy is especially noteworthy for its bookplate, marking the ownership of bookseller Charles Muskett. The bookplate's shade appears to match the Poison Book Project's sample swatch of arsenical green shades (as do the boards of a book he published later in 1860, THE NATURAL HISTORY OF THE COUNTY OF NORFOLK). Given the date (approx. 1840s-1850s) and location (London/Norwich), it is likely the bookplate is arsenical. Thus far very little scholarly work has been done on the subject of arsenical bookplates; this copy is worthy of further study. 5.5'' x 3.5''. Original blind-stamped blue cloth, gilt-stamped spine. Yellow coated endpapers. Illustrated with 3 full-page plates by the Dalziel Brothers (calls for a fourth by Scott, but this must be a binding error, as the binding is tight and there is no evidence of removal between pp. 64-65 where that plate is bound in other copies). Publisher's ads at rear. 230, [2] pages. Small circular bookplate to front pastedown in (likely) arsenical green, "Muskett / Norwich." Additional ink owner name to front pastedown. Hinges cracked but holding. A bit of foxing to first and last leaves, touch of toning to spine. Bright.

Designed and produced by Andrew Hoyem. This is the ninety-fifth publication of the Press. This is an elegant edition of the famed novel by Wilkie Collins, first published in 1868. Collins (1824-1889) is perhaps best known for this early work, which established many of the ground rules of the modern detective novel and is also perhaps the earliest clear example of the police procedural genre. [Wikipedia] It was serialized in" All the Year Round" from January to August 1868. Bound in dark blue cloth with titling in yellow to spine. The black and white illustrations throughout the book are by the well known artist Stan Washburn. Printed on Mohawk Letterpress paper using Inland Caslon, Caslon Bold Condensed, and Mediaeval types. The illustrations were printed from photopolymer plates. Housed in a slipcase covered with yellow paper and dark blue cloth with yellow titling to spine. Affixed to the spine is a yellow Swarovski crystal symbolizing the moonstone of the novel. In fine condition. Measures 6.25 x 9.5 inches. 458 pages plus colophon.

[a lovely copy with only light handling wear; original subscriber's name and address stamped neatly in upper corner of rear cover (amazing to think that at one time this went through the U.S. Mail -- it honestly appears to have barely been touched by human hands); NOTE that this item has been graded according to book-grading standards, NOT comic-book guidelines]. (cartoon drawings) Early Disney magazine, the precursor to the comic book-format "Walt Disney's Comics and Stories" (which first appeared under that title in October 1940). This issue contains these stories: "The White Goat" by Sari; "Look Before You Leap," by an uncredited author, "in Which Donald Duck Has a Few Jumpy Moments"; "Spiky the Hedgehog" by Lida, with pictures by Rojan; and "A Little Drop of Water," also uncredited. A cartoon feature, "Peter the Farm Detective," features little white boy Peter being entertained by African "savages" at a feast. The last ten pages contain comic strip reprints, including four pages of a Mickey Mouse "out west" adventure that looks to me like the work of Floyd Gottfredson. (NOTE that the crossword puzzle on page 25 has been completed in pencil. A sharp-looking copy despite a few minor internal depredations. .

"The author's design was to compare our limited monarchy with the greatest modern republic, not in order to disparage either, but to elucidate both to a popular audience of his countrymen (...) The subject has an intrinsic claim to attention. It embraces a variety of topics, both entertaining and important, and historical truths of immense practical value, concerning which the people are deeply interested and too often misled." --Preface, viii CONTENTS: Lecture One: Introductory Lecture Two: Provincial Institutions. Outline of American Constitution. Lecture Three: Elective Franchise. Legislative Assemblies. Lecture Four: The Executive Power. Lecture Five: Law-Religion. Lecture Six: Social Influence of Political Institutions. Peter Freeland Aiken [1799?-1877] was a Scottish advocate for some time, and later moved to Bristol, England. He was the author of The People's Charter, and Old England For Ever (1839) and War: Religiously, Morally and Historically Considered (1850).
