Description
Barcelona: Juan Pablo Marti for Francisco Barnola, 1701. Scarce first edition of this curious funeral fête for Carlos II, generally regarded by posterity as the most stupid and ineffective of the Hapsburg kings of Spain, whose reign (1665-1700) saw the utter dismemberment of the kingdom by Louis XIV. Needless to say, this is not how he is regarded in this account of the funeral proceedings by the Jesuit Rocaberti, which in addition to the standard description of the public ceremonies and the unusually large catafalque (pictured), contains one feature we have never encountered in a funeral publication: some of the orations, laments, hymns and other literary texts are arrayed in calligrams, labyrinths and other graphically striking configurations. For example, the text of a Latin distich Mors rapuit Carolum (Death has snatched Charles) has been scrambled in a diamond-shaped pattern. * Palau 271,658; De Backer Sommervogel VI.1928.1.. 4to. [19.8 x 14.5 cm], (12) ff., 272 pp., (14) ff., 8 folding plates (that of the catafalque oversized & signed Francisco Gazan after Jos. Vives), and 1 printed in red and black. Bound in contemporary flexible vellum, title stenciled on spine in a neat hand. Ownership inscription of Juan Ant. de Figueras on front end leaf; some foxing and small, light waterstain on title and in upper margin of scattered leaves; some repairs to blank upper margin of approximately 15 leaves. Otherwise good.

Cologne (but Amsterdam?): Cornel. ab Egmond, 1634. 12mo (12 cm); [xxiv], 949, [10], [2 blank] pages, with engraved title and 23 engravings in the text, and tables. In plain vellum, yapp edges, titled in manuscript on spine. Vertical fissures in vellum along length of spine. References: Landwehr 254 (804 pages), Jantz 864, De Backer and Sommervogel III, 192, #11 (1018 p). Cf. Praz, p.320 (1629 ed.). A well-illustrated edition of this curious and scarce work on depravity in language, arranged in alphabetical order. Each aspect of corrupted speech (e.g., blasphemy, calumny, chatter, drunken speech, lying and swearing) is illustrated by one emblem in its place in the alphabetical catalogue of misuse. First printed at Munich in 1629. There are two other 1634 imprints about, one with 804 pages and one with 1018 pages. Jantz suggests that this Cologne imprint actually came out of Amsterdam.

Description
Appoquinimink Hundred, 1856. Broadside, 8 1/4" x 13", printed in two columns, and signed and dated in type at the end by Townsend, William Weldon, Jacob Hill, William M. Johnson, and James Doughten for the Central Committee of Appoquinimink Hundred at the end. Generous margins, a few fox marks at the outer margins. Near Fine. Townsend, whose papers reside at the University of Delaware, was a prominent Delaware Democrat. A Union man during the War, he opposed emancipation and would, during Reconstruction, help to found the Delaware White Man's Party. In this rare broadside, issued a month before the 1856 elections, Townsend and other members of the Central Committee warn of intraparty strife, led by a "small party of disorganizers" who challenged the duly nominated local ticket; and who have "done nothing towards preparing the party for the terrible struggle that must take place between the Democracy of this county, and the combined factions that are trying to put it down." OCLC 79153031 [1- Clements], 32084932 [2- U DE, AAS] as of January 2025.

Description
[Paris], 1969. Near fine in printed wrappers; gatherings uncut. Scarce; with only a single OCLC record discovered (IISH).. First Edition. Octavo. An undercover Situationist publication disguised as an interdisciplinary journal of plankton studies, in order to facilitate clandestine distribution in Eastern Europe. (The regular edition of this number being rather flashy, with its metallic purple wrappers). The cover features an imaginary table of contents for the journal of the fictional Plankton Society, wrapped-around the original text-block of the lengthy August/September 1969 issue of the Internationale Situationniste (No. 12). The rear wrapper keeps-up the stunt, with mention of the annual fees for the Society, along with the theme of an upcoming special issue. "Le revue trimestrielle de la Société d'Études du Plancton publie les résultats des recherches contemporaines, universitaires et industrielles, sur l'écologie, la biologie, la chimie biologique, les problèmes économiques etc., du plancton.
