Attlee (1883-1967) served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1945-1951, following his term as Deputy Prime Minister during the coalition government of Winston Churchill. Attlee remains the longest serving leader of the Labour Party, from 1935-1955. Following the Second World War, the British economy was near bankruptcy and suffering from food shortages. Attlee's creation of the modern welfare state and fiscal reforms were met with skepticism during his tenure as Prime Minister, but history now regards him as one of the greatest British prime ministers.

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. No binding. Near Fine. [Los Angeles: CBS, 1943]. Vintage original 8 x 10" (20 x 25 cm.) black-and-white glossy silver gelatin photo. MGM photo ink stamp of 9746 on verso. Minor wear, near fine. Greer Garson launches into her acceptance speech for her Academy Award as Best Actress for 1942 for her role in Mrs. Miniver. She is presented by 1941's winner Joan Fontaine. Garson is known to have made the longest Academy speech in history; because of that, speeches were thereafter given time limits. The award seen in the image is likely one made of painted plaster, as the awards given out in 1943-45 were made of plaster due to a shortage of metal. This photo was one retained by the MGM photographers.

Generally a clean copy with no internal markings
Description
Berkeley, CA: University of California Press, 2004. First edition. Generally a clean copy with no internal markings. 11 x 9.5 inches. 280 pages. Profusely illustrated in color. Original pictorial wrappers. "This fully illustrated 248-page book accompanies the first comprehensive American retrospective of Robert Smithson's (1938-1973) complex and highly influential career. Straddling the movements of minimalism and land art, Smithson, who died in a plane crash at the age of 35, had a profound impact on the cultural landscape that resonates to this day. Robert Smithson presents essays by top Smithson scholars alongside both archival imagery and specially commissioned photography of the artist's works; it considers the interrelationship of Smithson's complete artistic output, from the earliest figurative work up to his famed earthworks. Smithson's revolutionary ideas positioned art as existing beyond the walls of the museum in media such as writing and film, and even in the landscape itself. This volume and the exhibition it accompanies explore Smithson's work within the context of the artistic climate of the late 1960s as well as ensuing decades" (the publisher).

Description
New Jersey: Paulist Press, 2008. Hardcover. Very Good. Hardcover. 9 1/4" X 6 1/4". xvi, 399pp. Very mild shelf wear to covers, corners, and edges of paper over boards with spine backed in gold cloth. Gentle bump to head of spine. Pages are clean and unmarked. Binding is firm and sound. ABOUT THIS BOOK: The spiritual tradition of the Low Countries, mostly written in Dutch (or Flemish, which is the same language) must rank, together with the German School, as the most important vernacular tradition in late medieval and early modern Europe. This book presents for the first time texts from this school of Netherlandish mysticism of the late medieval period in English translation. It contains extracts or full treatises from all the major representatives of this school after the death of Jan van Ruusbroec. None of these texts are available in English, and some were never published at all but were translated from late medieval manuscripts. The book contains texts of a mystical and pastoral nature, often dealing with the problem of suffering, reflecting the troubled times during which they were written. Readers will appreciate the wide variety of texts offered here. There are a number of more "traditional" mystical-theological writings that look back to the age of Ruusbroec, developing a profound spirituality of the Trinity (for instance, William Jordaens, a contemporary of Ruusbroec, but also the author of The Evangelical Pearl and the Temple of the Soul). Some of the texts focus almost exclusively on the suffering of Christ, and others anticipate some of the key-themes of the Reformation.(Publisher).
