Scarce, French-language edition of Du Laurens’ works, with a set of 26 anatomical engravings derived from Vesalius and othe
Description
Paris: for Raphael du Petit Val à Rouen, 1613. Scarce, French-language edition of Du Laurens’ works, with a set of 26 anatomical engravings derived from Vesalius and others. "This is the second edition of the French translation of Du Laurens’ collected works... which preceded the publication of the Latin text. In addition to the author's textbook of anatomy and his account of scrofula, the volume contains works on geriatrics, melancholy and other mental afflictions, and an early opthalmological work which describes the anatomy and diseases of the eye. The volume has an exceptionally well-engraved title page, the author's engraved portrait, and numerous historical and ornamental woodcut initials." — Heirs of Hippocrates, p. 144. According to Krivatsy, the French translation of Du Laurens’ Opera Omnia was first published by P. Mettayer in Paris in 1613, and was reprinted by Raphael Du Petit Val in Rouen in 1621. Our copy has an engraved title signed by du Petit Val in Rouen but dated 1613; the Rouen librairie presumably recycled some of the original Paris-printed titles, modifying the original engraving with a cancel. Du Laurens (1558-1609) was the court physician to Marie de Medicis and Henry IV and previously had been professor at the University of Montpellier. * Wellcome I, 1942; Krivatsy, 3506, 3507; Heirs of Hippocrates, 389.. Folio [23 x 34.5 cm], (10) ff., including engraved allegorical title & portrait of Du Laurens, 353 (1) pp., (10) ff.; (1)f., 53, (3) ff.; 43, (3) ff.; 57, (3) ff.; 30, (2) ff. Bound in contemporary French calf, gilt-ruled covers with gilt wreath in center, spine with raised bands, rebacked with author-title gilt on spine. Ex Libris of Pierre Americ on front-end pastedown, early ownership inscription of Michaux ... De la Burtieve / Praecevitor S. Capellae Dune.sis (?) on title. Soiling to engraved title with extreme right margin in partial facsimile; preliminary & final leaves remargined without loss; light waterstain in upper margin of scattered leaves; some other leaves soiled or spotted in margin.

Description
[San Antonio]: Jules A. Appler, 1940. Very good.. Large sheet map, 41.5 x 29.25 inches. Printed in black, green, and red. Old folds, some slight splitting at folds. Minor wear and soiling. A scarce, large-format map of San Antonio, Texas, capturing the city at the beginning of its World War II boom. This is perhaps the last work published by Jules A. Appler, a property developer who issued many of the city’s most popular maps and directories over a 50-year period. Appler was active between 1890 and 1940, creating many of the most popular maps recording life in San Antonio over two generations of dramatic growth. This substantial map showcases all of San Antonio and its immediate environs. The city is shown centered upon the old town with its circular canal on the San Antonio River, with the Alamo nearby. Several railway lines converge on the center of the city, highlighting San Antonio's history as a transportation hub. The various named neighborhoods fan out in all directions, generally following a grid-pattern, interspersed by parklands, while the new suburbs, many with curvy street patterns, lie further afield. Indicative of the city’s diversity (and its contemporary racial segregation), the cemetery area, in the lower right center, notes the different sections for various Christian denomination, as well as ‘Hebrew’ and ‘Colored’ plots. While the map is undated, and the OCLC record simply says "1910s," it appears that Appler received a copyright for the map on August 20, 1940. Three institutional examples noted, at the Texas State Library, Southern Methodist University, and the Daughters of the Republic of Texas Library.

This book was dedicated to Rackham's daughter, Barbara Mary Rackham. An excellent copy. Arthur Rackham (1867-1939) is perhaps the most acclaimed and influential illustrators of the Golden Age of Illustration. A prolific artist even from his youth, Rackham got his start as an illustrator working for the Westminster Budget Newspaper (1892). Over the next few years, he took on more and more commissions for children's books, hitting his career high in the first three decades of the twentieth century. Rackham turned his imaginative pen to every classic-from Shakespeare to Dickens to Poe. An exceptional collection of both Rackham and Thomson illustrations, with their contributions in full below. The Arthur Rackham illustrations: The Fish-King and the Dog-Fish (color frontispiece) Adventures in Wizard-Land (black & white headpiece) page 1 "So you've come to see the Wizard," he said (black & white plate facing page 6) "All those poor creatures were children" (one third-page black & white drawing) page 11 He took two jewelled circlets out of a satchel (half-page black & white drawing) page 14 "I am the Bird-Fairy," she said (one third-page black & white drawing) page 19 Its head was patted graciously (black & white plate facing page 52) They met many a quaint creature (one third-page black & white drawing) page 59 What a glorious ride that was! (black & white plate facing page 62) She stroked it -- actually stroked it (black & white plate facing page 70) Taking the boy and girl by a hand, he led them (black & white plate facing page 82) The wizard, with a groan of pain, had leapt back (one third-page black & white drawing) page 87 Lying full length on the ground next to his shattered invention (one third-page black & white drawing) page 89 It was a very, very long ladder (black & white plate facing page 154) "I suppose you know you're trespassing?" (one third-page black & white drawing) page 157 The two reindeer . . . sped rapidly away (black & white plate facing page 164) The Hugh Thomson illustrations: [The Little Picture Girl] (one quarter-page black & white drawing) page 103 "The Little Picture Girl" (black & white plate facing page 104) "He mounted it very carefully" (three quarter-page black & white drawing) page 107 "In marched a stout beadle" (black & white plate facing page 110) "Smiled as she waved good-bye" (three quarter-page black & white drawing) page 113 "Looking neither to the right nor to the left" (black & white plate facing page 232) Riall 95. Description
Turin: Imprimerie Royale, 1862. FIRST EDITION. With 4 folding plates. Contemporary blind-stamped cloth; small stamp on title, last signature with early repair in the margin. A very nice copy. First edition of this rare work in French published by the Academy of Sciences in Turin, on new technology in military armaments. The author provides an overview of the refinements proposed to barrel rifle and muzzle-loading and breech canons. He details the changes that the military is making to their weapons, including both the guns as well as the ammunition. Going back to review changes made in the technology of weapons and ammunition during the earlier part of the nineteenth century, and still questioning whether these, plus the more “modern” changes, are for the better. Then an in-depth analysis of barreled weapons, including a study of their efficiency. The four folding plates show various canon and their positions inside the batteries for optimal defense and offense.

Description
Washington, D.C.: Federal Bureau of Investigation, 1974. Mailer measuring 8 x 15 ¾ inches, folded in fours. Yellow tape to seal; else Fine.. An FBI mailer soliciting information about Emily Harris and Patricia Hearst of the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA), a left-wing militant group based in California and responsible for several killings and bank robberies between 1973 and 1975. Hearst, the granddaughter of publishing tycoon William Randolph Hearst, had been kidnapped by the SLA in February of 1974; in April, she turned up on surveillance video robbing a San Francisco bank with other members of the SLA. Harris was involved in Hearst’s kidnapping and was, at the time this mailer was distributed, on the run with her husband William Harris and Hearst, and wanted for firearms violations. The mailer describes the three as “armed and very dangerous.” The trio was arrested in San Francisco in 1975. The Harrises served eight years in prison but were re-arrested in 2002 for the murder of Myrna Opsahl during a 1975 bank robbery. Hearst served two years of a seven-year sentence; her sentence was commuted by Jimmy Carter, and in 2001 she was pardoned by Bill Clinton.
