Description
Chicago, IL: Hall & Co. (E. D. Mendel, Lithographic & Map Publishing Office, Chicago), 1855. Lithograph map of Chicago, 30 ½ x 24 inches, the map fully enclosed within a wide ornamental border (1 3/8 inches); accompanied by its cloth folder (gilt stamped “Directory Map of Chicago”; very worn and warped). “Shows parks, public buildings, railroad stations, land ownership, and railroads; includes population statistics for 1840 through 1855” (OCLC). Published to be included in The Chicago City Directory, and Business Advertiser, compiled by E. H. Hall (Fourth Annual Edition, with a New map of the City. Chicago: Robert Fergus 1855; AII Ante-Fire Imprints 131). Only a handful of copies of the map are known, however, and Goodspeed’s cataloguing from 1946 states “The corresponding directory of the city calls for a map, but we know of no copy having one; apparently the map was issued separately in this form.” Of the known copies, only one other seems to have the wide floral border as here (the others are enclosed within a simple bold rule). Not in Phillips, Graff, Eberstadt, or Streeter sale. Rare in trade with no copies noted at auction in the past 45 years (ABPC, 1976-2021 and RareBookHub) and the last copy offered for sale on RareBookHub, by Goodspeed, was in 1960. This copy has been laid down on archival paper, with cracks at several folds infilled and with the loss of a little delineation; despite those defects and a little browning, still an attractive copy of this rare map.
