Description
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1961. First edition. Fine/Very Good +. First printing with "Bound By H. Wolff" in the five line colophon. A Fine, bright copy in Very Good+ jacket. Gift inscription dated 1966 to upper free endpaper. First issue dust jacket (without the ISBN number). Dust jacket price-clipped, with a bit of wear to head and tail of spine, a couple slight nicks to spine, and a shallow tear to front panel at fold. Still an attractive example of the jacket, with the spine unusually bright. A very appealing copy. An attractive copy of this Dahl high spot, his second book for children after Gremlins. This American edition was the first published, with a British edition not following until 1967. The story was somewhat controversial due to the cruel treatment James receives living with his aunt and uncle - much like Harry Potter, Dahl's own Matilda, and other young heroes and heroines of children's literature. After escaping from home in a giant magical peach, James travels the world with his new friends having all sorts of wonderful adventures. The 1996 film was produced by Tim Burton and directed by Henry Selick and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Musical. Fine in Very Good + dust jacket.

This copy boasts large, whimsical original art by notable magazine cartoonists Jack Ziegler, Gahan Wilson, Sam Gross and Bill Woodman.Celebrating the work of American cartoonists from the late 19th century through 1975, The Art in Cartooning collects over 300 examples of the form at its finest, drawn from the pages of The New Yorker and other magazines. Artists represented include Charles Addams, Peter Arno, Gahan Wilson, James Thurber, Rube Goldberg and many more. All of the four cartoonists who have inscribed this copy with delightful original work are represented in its pages, and most are best known for their contributions to The New Yorker. On the front pastedown, Jack Ziegler depicts an angel with a harp whispering in the ear of a bartender, ""First you get a clean glass…"" The front free endpaper features a cartoon by Gahan Wilson depicting a huddled man on a raft inside a bottle with the inscription ""To Jack Herbert with all best wishes, Gahan Wilson."" The rear free endpaper has a cartoon of a cat crouched outside a mousehole with the mouse inside saying ""Sorry, I can't make it to Benchley's pub tonight, I'm all tied up at the moment,"" and the inscription ""To Jack, Regards S. Gross."" The rear pastedown shows a man with a martini on the floor next to a bar, with a bartender saying ""The management says you've had enough sir"" and the inscription ""Best to Jack, Bill Woodman."" Includes eight color plates. Only a bit of creasing to dust jacket. A wonderfully inscribed copy.

Description
“Cologne”; the Hague: “Pierre Marteau”, 1718. (lacking final two blanks) Contemporary blind-ruled mottled calf, spine and label gilt, edges marbled blue, blue silk marker. Old armorial ex-libris bookplate. Some paper flaws and rough cuts not affecting text. Two satirical anonymous occult texts taking aim at Rosicrucianism. The first is written in the form of a dialogue between a cabalist (Comte de Gabalis) and a skeptic. The five “entretiens”, or interviews, attempt to discount the Paracelsian doctrine on elementary spirits and parody alchemy, divination, and astrology. Whether deliberate or not, the book revealed many secrets closely held in the Rosicrucian and Jansenist circles, and for this slight, Villars was murdered 3 years after publication of the first edition (1670). The second text purports to be of the same authorship, but this would be impossible as the first edition, offered here, was published 45 years after Villars’ death. (Brunet and other bibliographers have ascribed it to Antoine Androl.) The narrative piggybacks off Comte de Gabalis, describing and denouncing the elemental spirits of genies and gnomes. I. Very good
Description
Corpus Christi, Texas: Blackwell Photography, 1968. Very good. 36 8" x 10" B&W photographs, including 9 duplicates. Very good or better: a few slightly wavy with mild corner wear. This is a great group of photos revealing the 1968 "New Year's Day Swim and Beauty Pageant," an event held in Corpus Christi, Texas, for over 20 years. Articles in local papers told us all about the day: "Approximately 400 persons braved goosebump weather yesterday morning to help usher in 1968 . . . Held this year in front of the Million Dollar Inn on Padre Island, the festivities began about 10 a.m. when nine shivering bathing beauties paraded before judges at the side of the inn's swimming pool." A local radio star served as MC, and the contest was judged by native notables such as "Nueces County Commissioner Robert Barnes, State Rep. Charles Scoggins, mayor pro tem Ronnie Sizemore and Mrs. Laura S. Stevenson, the winner of the 1962 contest." The "swim" ("a brief dash in and out of the 53-degree water") began as a dare among Chamber of Commerce staff in 1955, and when the Jaycees took it over they added the beauty pageant. It was seen as a promotion for the "mild" winter in South Texas, but a string of frigid New Year's Days led to its demise; in 1978 one local paper wrote that "a group of thoroughly chilled young ladies shivering alongside a gray and even chillier Gulf" was nothing short of a "civic embarrassment." These joyful photos show the mostly bare-skinned beauties "helping" change the marquis at the Million Dollar Inn, cavorting on the beach with a costumed Moses and his staff, posed with swimmers, poolside, in the surf and at the awards ceremony (where they were finally allowed coats). The winner, Ginger Patterson, "a 19-year old blonde who may be the most photographed beauty in South Texas," was "one of the sunshine girls at the Corpus Christi Area Tourist Bureau" who also "handles the information desk." She won a watch, a three-foot trophy, a "tour of HemisFair" and a weekend stay at the inn. We found ads for Blackwell Photography, "Pictures That Tell The Story," in Corpus Christi newspapers until 1982. Jack Blackwell, owner and editor of the Corpus Christi Press and community leader, operated the business for over 20 years before turning it over to his son in 1972. A fantastic collection showing a popular winter event in South Texas.
