Description
1885. AWOKI, T. and J. SUSUKA. Sekai ryoko bankoku meisho zue. Illustrated Guide Book for Travellers round the World. Five volumes in seven. Illustrated with hundreds of woodcut illustrations including a volvelle, accompanied by a folding Map of the World in illustrated boards. 145 x 95 mm. each, bound in original publisher's cloth-backed illustrated paper over boards. Osaka: Sanyodo, 1885. A fine set of this scarce Japanese guide to the world which offers a magnificently eccentric vision of the World at the end of the nineteenth century as viewed by the Japanese just as they were coming out of centuries of isolation. A very aesthetic object of great rarity. OCLC lists only a set in the National Library of Australia, a partial set and an odd volume.

Description
28/07/1851. An ALS as PresidentIn August 1786, Shays’s Rebellion broke out in western Massachusetts. Initially, debt-ridden farmers petitioned the government in Boston to issue paper money, to halt foreclosure of mortgages on their properties, and end their own imprisonment for debt as a result of high land taxes. Anger was particularly high against the commercial interests who controlled the state senate, a body they condemned as aristocratic and inappropriate in a representative republic. When the state senate failed to undertake reform, a thousand armed insurgents in the Berkshire Hills and the Connecticut valley, under the leadership of Daniel Shays and others, began forcibly to prevent the county courts from sitting to make judgments for debt. In September they forced the state supreme court at Springfield to adjourn. Meanwhile, demonstrators and rioters used violence to protest high taxation, the governor’s high salary, high court costs and similar grievances. This revolt threatened to plunge the area into a full scale insurrection, and to spread; and while the poor were ready to fight, the wealthy classes were frightened. The inadequacy of the Articles of Confederation manifested itself at home with weakness if not paralysis of government, and economic conditions worsened. Virginia was asking for states to send representatives to Annapolis to consider revising the basis of government. The entire nation was alarmed by reports of Shay’s Rebellion and the outbreak of violence and the challenges to government that resulted. In response to the growing crisis, George Washington wrote desperately that ""commotions of this sort, like snow-balls, gather strength as they roll, if there is no opposition in the way to divide and crumble them.”By December 1786, the conflict between eastern Massachusetts creditors and western rural farmers escalated. Massachusetts Governor James Bowdoin mobilized a force of 1,200 militiamen to counter Shays. The army was led by former Continental Army General Benjamin Lincoln and funded by private merchants. Lincoln's forces anticipated that the Shay’s men would storm the federal armory at Springfield, Massachusetts, and were waiting when Shays approached the armory with approximately 1,500 men on January 25, 1787. The army fired warning shots followed by artillery fire, killing four of the insurgents and wounding twenty. The rebel force quickly faltered and scattered into the countryside. Many participants were later captured and most men, including Shays, eventually received amnesty as part of a general pardon.Later that year, the Constitutional Convention was called to address these deficiencies of government.A friend named Taylor sent a copy of a book on Shay’s Rebellion to President Fillmore. He thought it so important that he in turn lent it to the Attorney General. Autograph letter signed, as President, Washington, July 28, 1851, to F. Taylor. “I return herewith the History of Shay’s Rebellion in Massachusetts; with many thanks for its use and many apologies for having detained it so long. But I lent it to the Attorney General to peruse and it was mislaid. Do you hear from that 18 inch globe? When may I expect it?” It is interesting to know that Taylor was supplying Fillmore with significant works in multiple areas, such as history and cartography, and that Fillmore was interested in them.

London: W. and J. Innys, 1720. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. Wooduct initials, head- and tailpieces, 1 folding plate. Contemporary paneled calf, rebacked; slight foxing on preliminary leaves, overall a fine copy. First English edition. Originally published in Latin in 1654, this was an important contribution to the subject of pulmonary tuberculosis. Bennet includes his observations on a number of his cases and dissections. “Its most valuable feature is the constant reference to causes observed and to dissection, not to authority which gives the little treatise an honorable place among the earlier examples of the modern method in medicine.” The plate illustrated instruments to use for what the author terms fumigation” or means of inhaling steam, to which he attaches great importance Bennet (1617-1655), a successful London physician, became himself a victim of tuberculosis and died at the age of 38. DNB, II, p. 229; Osler, 2010.

Description
Six letters, 20 pages, two letters retain their original mailing envelopes, in good, clean, and legible condition. Six letters pertaining to the Coburn family, including three letters by Stephen Coburn to his sisters, two of which were written while he was a teacher on a plantation in Tarboro, North Carolina in 1840. "Tarboro April 6, 1840 Dear Sister Elvira, … I was very anxious to learn the result of the series of meetings which you were about to hold and what was the religious state of the Church and community. … But though there should be no more apparent fruit of the revival we ought not to think that God revives his people in ruin. We should believe that he makes the grace and zeal of his people the great instrument of converting the world and he knows whether it is best that the fruits of these should be slow and gradual or more sudden and apparent. Above all we ought to be thankful that thee exists in the church a spirit of Union and Christian love without which it cannot prosper and which itself is one of the greatest tokens of divine favour. We ought to be rejoiced to hear of the revival of Gods work in any place; but it is natural and perhaps right that we should be more interested in regard to our own church and the people to whom we are connected by all the ties of kindred and friendship. I often think of the little attachment I have shown to the Church since I was connected with it and the little profit I have been to the cause of Christ which if it appears as it does to my blind and stupid heart I know how it must appear to God who requires perfect obedience and who sees all things as they are… There is a schism in the Baptist Church in this place which it is said extends over a considerable part of the state. The parties are now organized into different churches and are distinguished by the name of Missionary and non missionary Baptists. The non missionary Baptists are opposed to Foreign mission and it is said also to raising money for the support of preaching or for any such purpose. The division seems to have been occasioned a few years ago by the injudicious course of a strange minister who caused a portion of the dissatisfied to come off from his church and to form one by themselves. However I am not sufficiently acquainted with the circumstances to judge accurately. We have very good preaching here though generally from men of little education except the Episcopalian ministers. Mrs Macnair is an Episcopalian. She appears to be a very pious woman and is one of the most pleasant agreeable women in the world. The family are all vert agreeable and my task is very pleasant. …" Stephen Coburn was a US Congressman, born in Skowhegan, Maine, he was the brother of Maine Governor Abner Coburn. He graduated from Waterville College, in 1839, taught at a plantation school in Tarboro, North Carolina, 1839-1840, and was principal of the Bloomfield Academy Maine, 1840-1844. He then studied law at Harvard Law School, was admitted to the bar in 1845, and commenced practicing law in Skowhegan, Maine and was a member of the Maine State Board of Education, 1849-50. In 1859, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-sixth Congress to fill the vacancy of Israel Washburn, Jr., serving until 1861. Not a candidate for re-election, he resumed the practice of law and was postmaster of Skowhegan, (1868-1877). He died in 1881.
