Description
Hollywood or New York: United Artists, 1928. Fine. Charles W. Panc (?). Scarce, and especially attractive, movie poster portrait of John Barrymore. This style of poster is called a "Personality Poster", as it is promoting the star as much as any particular film, and movie theaters could re-use the poster in other movies starring the same actor, although here a movie title is given, unlike most Personality Posters. The poster is dominated by a head-on portrait of Barrymore in costume -- the costume being that of an Imperial Russian army officer. The poster is also derived from a painting, or paintings, since there are two smaller pictures, capturing two scenes from the movie in which Barrymore interacts with his love interest played by Camilla Horn. In one of the scenes, the two are fighting; the other, they're embracing. The poster has been reproduced. That said, this is an original, which is rare. The poster, in the upper right, has the name presumably of its artist, but we can't fully make out the surname, and with the letters we have, we haven't been able to figure out who the artist was. John Barrymore is remembered most for playing caricatures of himself as a dissipated middle aged lush, his days as a matinee idol when he was known as the Great Profile past him. The poster shows him as an Adonis still, and in fact the melodramatic movie was a vehicle for him with the story of treachery, love, betrayal, and spitfire plot turns revolving very much around his character. The movie was a Silent in terms of it having no spoken dialogue, but it was accompanied by a rich score. Barrymore would star in one more Silent with co-star Horn before his strong trained speaking voice was finally heard in a movie. With frame, 64 by 44.5 cm. Visible under glass, 59 by 39.5 cm. The frame, which is disposable in our opinion, has some wear. The poster appears to have no issues. We have not examined the poster outside the frame.

Description
Amsterdam: Wetstenios & Smith, 1732. FOURTH EDITION. Contemporary stiff vellum, yapp edges, manuscript spine title, red edges. Somewhat browned, but a good copy. Fourth edition of this influential work on forensic medicine, the book that introduced legal autopsies. The author distinguishes between intentional and accidental deadly wounds and describes procedures for postmortem wound analysis. First published in 1689, this treatise represents an important practical intersection between medicine and law. Johannes Bohn (1640-1718) was a German physician and legal authority. Although he wrote many scientific texts, his will stipulated that they be burned upon his death. This is one of two books that survived. Madea, Handbook for Forensic Medicine 10.

Description
[Chicago]: [The Zippies], 1972. Original silkscreen poster printed in blue on white cardboard stock. Measures 53x44 cm (21" x 17.5"). Very Good with some light horizontal creasing, slightly curled. A rare poster produced for a rock benefit concert held at Chicago's I.W.W. Hall for the Zippies, the short-lived radical offshoot of the Yippies that emerged as enthusiasm for disruptive pranks and provocative behavior waned with the dawning of the '70s and the gradual enfranchisement of key Yippies. The Zippies zeal for disruption was such that many contemporaries suspected they were a faction of agents provocateur. The poster illustration features a flying eyeball similar to Rick Griffin's design for his famous Bill Graham Jimi Hendrix poster (BG-105). Performers included proto-punks David Peel & the Lower East Side, glam band Teenage Lust, Evil, and Armadillo.
