Description
Philadelphia: The John C. Winston Company, 1931. Decorative Cloth. Collectible; Very Good. A magnificent World War I item: WARMLY--WITH FEELING AND GREAT AFFECTION--INSCRIBED BY 13 MAJOR AND BRIGADIER GENERALS WHOSE CAREERS WERE DEEPLY IMPACTED BY THEIR SERVICE TO THE FIRST DIVISION. From Major General Charles Summerall (division leader) to Brigadier General Frank Parker, from Robert Bullard to Omar Bradley, from William Sibert to Beaumont Buck, from George Duncan to Campbell King, this copy serves almost as a personalized album of tributes to the First Division from its leadership. All 13 inscriptions (including the 8 leaders cited above) take up the first half-dozen endpapers and half-title page and amount to 7 pages of self-revealing and candid reminiscences. The book itself, while not particularly uncommon, has held up nicely. A firm, solid, VG+ copy of the 1931 2nd edition. Bright gilt-design and lettering to the front panel and spine. Thick octavo, 450 pgs. "Compiled and Published by the Society of the First Division". With these personal, detailed inscriptions, this is a remarkable --even unique-- insight into the early and crucial role of the First Division in America's entry into Europe in 1917.

Description
1953 First edition. Signed by Lemon and countersigned by Indians GM Hank Greenberg in blue ink on p. 3. Original four-page "Uniform Player's Contract," printed in black with red heading on p. 1. About fine, with light horizontal tri-fold lines. Overall, a great piece, signed by two Hall of Famers. Legendary pitcher Bob Lemon (1920 - 2000) played his entire 15-year professional career with the Cleveland Indians. In 1953, the year of this contract, Lemon finished the season with a 21-15 record, and led the American League in innings pitched. Lemon first signed with the Indians for $100 a month when he was 17 years old. In his illustrious playing career, he made seven all-star appearances, was a 3x AL wins leader, and won a World Series in 1948. Thirty years after winning a World Series title, in 1978, he led the Yankees to a World Series title as the team's manager. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1976. FROM B&B: Hank Greenberg played the first twelve (1930, 1933-41, 1945-46) of his thirteen seasons in the MLB with the Detroit Tigers. During his time in the league, Greenberg was the AL home run leader four times and won the AL Most Valuable Player Award twice. Shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941, Greenberg voluntarily enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and remained in the military until 1945, sacrificing a few prime years of his baseball career. He was also one of the first Jewish superstars of baseball, and famously chose not to play in an important game in 1934 because it coincided with Yom Kippur. Greenberg was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1956. . Signed. Near Fine.
