The Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts is the oldest chartered military organization in North America and the third oldest in the world. Its charter was granted in 1638 - to serve as a volunteer institution for training officers enrolled in militia companies across the state. The current invitation was issued on the occasion of the centennial of the birth of Daniel Webster, to be celebrated at the Commander's Quarters in Marshfield, and addressed to Hon. Charles Francis Choate (1828 - 1911), one of the best-known and most-successful Boston lawyers of the time, President of the Old Colony Railroad Company, President of the Massachusetts Hospital Life Insurance Company, and Vice-President of the New England Trust Company.
