Description
Parma: Luigi Mussi, 1805. First edition. Very Good. Quarto (31 cm); 2 volumes. [8], x, 272; 322 pages, and full-page engraved frontispiece of the author (after Angelica Kauffmann, mispelled "Kaufmnan"). Bound in publisher's pasteboard decorated in tortoise shell patterns ("carta tartarugata"), with printed paper labels on spines. Pages bright, fresh, and untrimmed. Binding somewhat abraded along joints, with some slight separation at tail of volume 1. Remarkably well-preserved set in unsophisticated state. References: Ferri, "Biblioteca Femminile Italiana," p. 34 ("edizione magnifica"); Parenti, "Rarità bibliografiche" (1958) vol 4, p. 80 (edizione magnifica e assai rara); paper covers: Quilici, Carte decorate, #100. Teresa Bandettini (1763-1837) filled salons and ballrooms all over Northern Italy performing improvisational poetry, sometimes accompanied by dance, adorned in clothing deemed "Grecian." She worked as a street performer first, gathering crowds, and reciting extemporaneous poetry on any subject that someone would call out, then passing the hat. Self-educated, she became admired for her erudition. (The so-called "improvvisatori" in Italy fascinated the expatriated English Romantics, and were pursued by them.) In addition to her improvised verse, Bandettini composed several structured pieces, including this romance epic in octaves on the adventures of Theseus and the foundation of Athens. While Bandettini's work has been largely ignored by the curriculum, we understand that she overcame debilitating personal circumstances and oppressive class and gender origins to achieve her celebrity. Angelika Kauffmann painted her portrait. The Duke of Modena (and other wealthy patrons) housed her and supported her literary career. Antoine Saliceti, Napoleon's chief administrator in Northern Italy, underwrote La Teseide. (He said that he pitied posterity for not being alive to hear her perform.) Bandettini's name resurfaced in 2002 with the discovery of six lost sonatas dedicated to her by the young Niccolò Paganini. The printer, Luigi Mussi, was Bodoni's star student during the 1790s. Mussi set up his own shop in Parma in 1803, carving a typeface and using page design that closely resembles Bodoni's.

Description
Philadelphia: David McKay Company, 1929. First American edition. Near Fine. Edition deluxe, number 101 to 775 copies (575 for England and 200 for the United States) signed by Arthur Rackham. Quarto (10 5/16 x 7 3/4 in; 263 x 197 mm). 231, [1] pp. Twelve full page color plates, twenty-two black and white line drawings. Publisher's white vellum, front cover ruled and lettered in gilt, spine decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt, pictorial endpapers, top edge gilt, others uncut. Some scattered foxing otherwise a Near Fine copy. Reportedly published as a means for thwarting debt, The Vicar of Wakefield became one of the most popular novels of the late 18th century. Mixing irony with sentimentalism, it paints a portrait of village life "narrated by Dr. Primrose, the title character, whose family endured multiple trials -- including the loss of their fortune, the seduction of a daughter, the destruction of their home by fire, and the vicar's incarceration -- before all is put right at the end" (Britannica). Goldsmith was a noted Irish wit and a member of Samuel Johnson's famed literary club, who Johnson praised as: "In genius, vivid, versatile, sublime. In style, clear, elevated, elegant." The legend of the book's publication is that Goldsmith was about to be arrested by his landlady for debt, when Johnson was able to sell the manuscript of the novel to a publisher for sixty pounds, saving his friend in the nick of time. For this illustrated edition, Rackham embraced historical costume and his traditional whimsy, despite the more fashionable Jazz-Age and Art Deco style predominant at the time (Husdon). Arthur Rackham (1867-1939) is perhaps the most acclaimed and influential illustrator of the Golden Age of Illustration. A prolific artist even from his youth, Rackham got his start as an illustrator working for the Westminster Budget Newspaper (1892). Over the next few years, he took on more and more commissions for children's books, hitting his career high in the first three decades of the twentieth century. Rackham turned his imaginative pen to every classic-from Shakespeare to Dickens to Poe. Hudson, p. 171. Latimore and Haskell, p. 65. Riall, p. 170. Near Fine.

Chiswick: The Caradoc Press, 1903. No. 215 OF 360 COPIES on paper (and 14 copies on vellum). 220 x 153 mm. (8 3/4 x 6"). 4 p.l. (first blank), 107, [4], 112-211, [1] pp. Publisher's limp vellum, flat spine with black lettering. Decorative woodcut borders on three pages, fine woodcut capitals in the strapwork style of 15th c. Italian initials, etched frontispiece portrait of Goldsmith by Harry George Webb, and signed by him in pencil. Printed in red and black. Franklin, p. 266; Tomkinson, p. 26. Short tear at bottom of front and rear pastedowns, isolated faint foxing, but an excellent copy, the binding quite clean and the contents very fresh. This attractive ninth publication of the Caradoc Press is the enduringly popular "Vicar of Wakefield." Written in 1761-62 but not published until four years later, "Vicar" was said to have been rescued from some of Goldsmith's unpublished manuscripts by Dr. Johnson, who thus saved the penniless author from debtors' prison by selling it to a publisher for £60. Considered to be the masterpiece of the middle-class domestic novel, the "Vicar" has never gone out of style because its whimsically delineated characters have a delightful simplicity that somehow insulates them against ultimate misfortune, and the innocent and virtuous are rewarded, as they should be, in the end. The Caradoc Press derives its name from a hill in Shropshire, near the birthplace of Hesba Dora Webb, who founded the press with her husband H. George Webb in 1899. The Webbs were responsible from the outset for every facet of Caradoc book production, issuing 20 volumes in the course of a decade featuring, as here, a typeface based on 15th century printer Nicolaus Jenson's celebrated roman founts..

New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1863. Good. Civil War edition, with the Census of 1860 tipped-in (population and principal town of each state); 11 x 9 1/4' pp. [3], 4-108; brown, wngraved paper over boards and 1/4 black morocco; illustrated with numerous engravings, 27 full- and double-page, hand-colored maps, and 32 smaller, in-text, hand-colored maps; spotting and wear to paper on boards; small rubbed spots to tips of spine; census sheet uniformly browned; occasional spotting and foxing, mostly to first and last few leaves; in good or better condition. In an ironic twist, some of the best-known atlases and geographies in the second half of the 19th century were created by a largely-unknown female author. Sarah Sophia Cornell (uncertain, possibly 1815 - 1875) had her works published by Appleton under S. S. Cornell, which would prompt author John Alfred Nietz to assume she was a man and to refer to her in his book "Old Textbooks" as "he" and "his." Most of her writings went through more than 20 printings. Her curret geography, published in the midst of the Civil War, had various maps revised and differing from those in previous editions.
