Description
Paris: Collection Éclectique, A. Blaizot - R. Kieffer, 1909. No. 45 of 250 COPIES, this one of 30 on Japanese vellum, with etchings in three states. 290 x 205 mm. (11 1/2 x 8"). 2 p.l., 359, [1] pp. SPLENDID SHELL-PINK MOROCCO, RICHLY GILT AND INLAID IN CATHEDRAL STYLE, BY CHARLES DE SAMBLANX (stamp-signed at foot of spine), covers framed with gothic-arch and rose-window-motifs executed in turquoise blue, petal pink, citron, and celadon morocco and gilt, raised bands, spine compartments with inlaid and gilt rose window centerpiece framed by gothic arches, gilt lettering, MOSAIC MOROCCO DOUBLURES with stained glass window design executed in shell pink, turquoise, and petal pink morocco and much gilt, pale lavender silk endleaves, all edges gilt. Original illustrated paper wrappers bound in. House in a (negligibly chafed) leather-lined, matching morocco trimmed chemise in a (slightly worn) morocco-lipped marbled paper slipcase. With 64 ETCHINGS, as called for, ALL IN THREE STATES (eau-forte pure, before letters, and with letters), consisting of 16 chapter openings (occupying two-thirds to three-quarters of a page) 16 in-text illustrations (one-half to three-quarters of a page), 16 full-page illustrations, and 16 tailpieces (one-half to two thirds of a page), and EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED WITH THREE ORIGINAL SKETCHES, two with artist's notes in French. Verso of front free endpaper with small round monogram ex-libris of "E S E." See: Carteret I, p. 442. Insignificant soiling at very edges of boards and spine top, but A VERY FINE COPY, pristine internally, and in an unworn binding. Highlighted by glorious doublures, this is a strikingly bound "grand luxe" strictly limited edition of a popular French novel celebrating Chartres Cathedral and featuring attractive etchings in three states as well as original artwork. Britannica says the French writer Joris-Karl Huysmans (1848-1907) was known for vividly written "major novels [that] epitomize successive phases of the aesthetic, spiritual, and intellectual life of late 19th-century France." Initially associated with Émile Zola and the naturalist movement, Huysmans eventually converted to Catholicism, and his later works reflect his religious devotion and fascination with mysticism. First published in book form in 1898, "La Cathédrale" follows the character Durtal (Huysmans' semi-autobiographical alter ego) on a spiritual journey centered around Chartres Cathedral. The novel is both a work of religious reflection and an elaborate study of Medieval architecture, symbolism, and Christian art, using the cathedral as a lens to explore faith, beauty, and transcendence. The celebration of the gothic cathedral's art and architecture is vividly felt in the superb etchings by Charles Jouas (1866-1942), who is particularly known for illustrating editions intended for French bibliophiles. Jouas' etchings here paint a portrait of Chartres from sweeping views of the exterior to intimate sketches of hidden recesses--showing the cathedral in ranging vantage points from a gargoyle's to a supplicant's. The artist's strong skills as a draughtsman are apparent in the excellent attention to detail and proportion, while the drama and moodiness of the gothic structure is beautifully captured with intense shadows and hatching effects. Three original sketches by Jouas are included in this work, two of which contain notes by the artist regarding the lines of text that inspired each image. The ultimate triumph of the book is its sumptuous Cathedral-style binding--a natural design choice for this text, and executed by a master who excelled at this type of work. Belgian binder Charles de Samblanx (or Samblancx, 1855-1943) began working in the trade at age 11 as an apprentice to Coppens. He eventually established his own firm, which was known from 1889-1909 as Samblancx-Weckesser, since de Samblancx had taken his gilder Jacques Weckesser into partnership. After 1909, de Samblanx again headed the firm alone. He worked in a variety of period styles, sensitively reproducing the bindings of previous centuries. Many of his bindings are now in the Royal Museum of Mariemont in Belgium. They are unfailingly exemplary in terms of design and execution, and the present example is a notable celebration of this binder's craft. The covers provide a powerful opening statement, and then when the binding is opened, the reader confronts ornate doublures that simulate the exhilarating experience of entering a cathedral full of stained-glass windows. The intensely constrained energy seen in the 32 rigidly controlled large and small panels making up each doublure is greatly memorable..

Description
Two scrolls (284 x 10,460 mm.; 10,950 mm., including front endpapers), speckled gold inner endpapers, outer endpapers covered in green silk with gold patterns. [Japan]: at the end of the second scroll (in trans.): “copied in 1830 by Chuwa Matsumura, having borrowed it from the family of Yahata” [?, our reading is uncertain, perhaps the family that lived in Awa Province, today’s Tokushima Prefecture]. These fine and handsome scrolls depict and describe the imperial procession and visit of Emperor Gomizunoo (1596–1680) to Nijo Castle in Kyoto in October 1626. Nijo Castle was the Kyoto residence of Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu (1604–1651), who used the five-day imperial visit as a way to legitimize the newly established Tokugawa supremacy in the country. In order to further cement the primacy of the Tokugawa shogunate, Princess Masako, one of the daughters of the second shogun, Hidetada, had became the consort of the reigning Emperor, Gomizunoo, in 1620. Preparations for the visit began in 1624. The procession itself was a lavish parade, which included an entourage of thousands, all elaborately (and meaningfully) dressed. During the Emperor’s stay at Nijo Castle, the shogun and his father, the retired former shogun Tokugawa Hidetada, treated the imperial family with great deference, presenting extravagant gifts and undertaking elaborate ceremonies over the five-day period. During the imperial visit, there were performances of Noh theater, waka (classical Japanese poetry) composition gatherings, traditional music performances, horseback riding events, and court kemari (a court ball game). This visit served as a statement of the wealth and stability of shogunal rule. The first scroll is illustrated with a series of 20 fine paintings of scenes of the great procession. It begins with text, in a fine calligraphic hand, which explains all the components of the parade. The first scene depicts the Shoshidai (an important administrator) and his entourage of about 14 members. Wonderfully — and this is true throughout this scroll — there are manuscript labels identifying key participants and their governmental positions. Even those not pictured are identified. There follows a series of 19 further scenes of groups within the procession, all identified with names, titles, and positions, including: 154 fiefdom lords (two are pictured with their entourages but all 154 are listed); the Roju Doi (Doi was an “Elder,” one of the highest-ranking government posts); two Metsuke (censors); Zoshiki (members of the military police); 22 Hakucho (servants to the Imperial Household, all dressed in white); the colorful and highly decorated imperial carriage, drawn by two oxen covered with ornate and brightly colored drapes with the chrysanthemum imperial crest, surrounded by many security men and attendants (including one servant carrying the Emperor’s shoes and a group of umbrella carriers); stable masters; the fiefdom lord of Owari General Tokugawa Yoshinao (the ninth son of Tokugawa Ieyasu) and his entourage, including a shoe carrier; two Karo (top-ranking samurai officials and advisors), Naruse and Takekoshi; Sendai Chunagon (a counselor of the second rank at the Imperial Court, with his entourage); Kaga Chunagon, with his own followers; Satsuma Chunagon, surrounded by his attendants; Echizen Saisho (a chancellor from Echizen), with his entourage; a number of fiefdom lords; and finally, at the of the procession, a large group of umbrella carriers. We note that a number of the participants in the procession are not pictured in this scroll but are listed with names, titles, and positions. We believe this is unique and valuable information. At the end of this scroll, we find the pen name “Chi Yoshizumi,” who states he copied this scroll, with his seal. The second scroll contains all text, written in the same fine hand, describing the events during the actual five-day visit to Nijo Castle. The text begins with accounts of uta-awase (waka poetry contests); musical performances (with a list of the pieces performed, participants, and the schools they represented); seating arrangements during the evening uta-awase; many examples of waka poetry, including the Emperor’s own contributions, with 62 creators’ names and titles, arranged by rank; and Noh performances, with nine plays listed along with the performers’ names. There is a list of gifts from the shogun, his wife, and his father for the Emperor, his wife Masako (the daughter of the retired shogun Hidetada), their children, and his mother. They include sacks of gold and silver, horses, daggers made of precious metals, 200 kimono, incense woods, deer musk, scrolls, dyes, bolts of silk from China, a gold incense burner, ornate candelabras, tea ceremony tools, silver vases, calligraphy tools and desks, books, honey, cash, pigments for makeup, white silk ready to be dyed, lacquerware, etc. There is another list of gifts to members of the Emperor’s court and their wives, heads of 13 famous Buddhist temples, various dignitaries, ladies-in-waiting, etc. The names and positions of the recipients are given. In fine condition, preserved in an old wooden box. Minor marginal worming towards the end of the second scroll.

Description
London: Printed for E. Curll in Fleet Street, 1717. First thus. Contemporary full calf with gilt label to spine. All edges speckled red. Measuring 155 x 90mm and collating complete including frontis and terminal advertisement: [4], 394, [2]. Shelfwear to extremities and slight bowing to boards. Contemporary annotations to front pastedown and front and rear endpapers with portions of rear endpapers excised; rear pastedown neatly removed. Internally a clean copy with a long closed tear to pages 213-214 professionally repaired with no loss to text, and brief examples of pencil marginalia to pages 237-38. A pleasing copy of a scarce erotic book which last appeared at auction over three decades ago and which ESTC lists at only 12 U.S. libraries. Drawn from a 17th century Spanish picaresque novel following the intrigues of the female rake Rufina, Alonso de Castillo's La Garduna de Sevilla (1642) first appeared in English in 1665 as a romantic adventure translated by John Davies as La Picara, or The Triumphs of Female Subtilty. By the time of this translation however, Rufina's persona took a more overtly libertine turn as she was declared a "whore" even within the title (i.e. "pole-cat"). Published by unscrupulous bookseller and printer Edmund Curll, the text has clear erotic rather than romantic implications. "A notorious figure among the publishers of the early eighteenth century for his boldness, lack of scruple, publication of work without authors' consent, and taste for erotic and scandalous publications," Curll did not involve himself in the release of texts that aimed to educate men and women into socially dictated marital roles (Baines and Rogers). Instead, his version of the Rufina story revels in its heroine's sexual appetite and capitalizes on the popularity of the English demi-monde -- courtesans such as Kitty Fisher, Lucy Cooper, and Charlotte Hayes -- by making her a more exoticized iteration of the fantasy they presented to men and women alike. Positioned as it is outside the British Empire, Rufina's narrative invites readers to engage at a slight distance with questions not only about her sexual agency (or even the agency of courtesans) but instead about the agency of women more broadly. As Kathleen Lubey has pointed out, erotic works from this period positioned "decadent sexual description" within a much larger prose structure that "posed questions about social justice [and] elaborated on gender inequity"; indeed, "pornographic prose fiction" such as The Spanish Pole-Cat "rethinks which people count as persons, to what degree they can claim property in their own bodies, and the correspondence of those bodies to social identity" (What Pornography Knows). Capable of stimulating the senses of all readers, physically and intellectually, Rufina, the female libertinism, and the sex trade she invokes encourage excitement over what can happen when limitations are stripped away from certain portions of the population that don't in reality have the ability to move with such freedom. ESTC T89213. Not in the Register of Erotic Books.

Description
09/07/1844. The Ship MOCTEZUMA was built in New York in 1835 and operated out of New Bedford, MA. Its Master was William E. Tower. It had two decks, three masts, square stern, and a billet head (a decorative piece of woodwork that adorns the bow of a ship. In many cases it is a figurehead or a bust). Its purpose was whaling. It left on a whaling voyage to the Indian Ocean and the Pacific on July 10, 1844, and would return January 9, 1847. The day before departing, it obtained this ship’s passport.Document signed, as president, July 9, 1844, authorizing the Ship Moctezuma, William E. Tower, Master, of the burden of 436 and 41/95, carrying “Provisions, stores and utensils for a whaling voyage”, and bound for the Indian Ocean, “to depart and proceed.” The seal is intact, and the document is countersigned by Secretary of State John C. Calhoun. We know that it also visited the Pacific Ocean, as the ship’s log book still survives, and it anchored outside Honolulu in April 1845 with 370 barrels sperm oil and 630 barrels whale oil.Whaling ship’s passports are much sought after and increasingly uncommon, and with the original log book online, this voyage can be thoroughly researched.

London Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, Brown & Green, 1825. Tall 4to. (13 x 9 1/4 inches), newly bound in period style quarter morocco over marbled sides with hidden morocco corners, red morocco title label on the spine; all edges marbled. Some light, widespread foxing but generally a clean attractive copy. For each of the twenty-five artists represented, Mr. Corner has produced an engraved portrait within a frame, after an existing painting or drawing. In the lower margin of each, he has reproduced a miniature of one of the artists' well known works, or a detail there from. The engravings are printed on India paper, which has been pasted onto to the page opposite a short biography of the artist. The list of artists includes many of the world's best known painters from Europe and the United Kingdom: Vandyck, Titian, Raphæl, Durer, Holbein, Caracci, and Sir Peter Lely to mention but a few. A VERY NICE COPy of an uncommon title. A VERY TALL LARGE PAPER COPY

Description
Phil Temple Publication, 1989. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Green cloth boards with gilt lettering under illustrated dust jacket; small reproduction of an original Thurston poster laid in as issued. Fine in fine jacket. This is partially a reprint of Howard Thurston’s scarce 1929 memoir My Life of Magic, but also includes a previously unpublished manuscript by his daughter Jane Thurston Shepard, as well as a “scrapbook” (articles, photos, etc.) contributed by Olson & Temple. Howard Thurston (1869-1936) was the most successful magician of his day. He began magic by learning card tricks, and called himself “The King of Cards”, yet his stage performance was extensive, and at its height, he had eight train cars of equipment—the largest of any vaudeville magic act. His adopted daughter Jane provides a fascinating behind-the-scenes insight into Thurston, with details not often seen when magicians write their own memoirs (which are usually at least partly self-promotion).
