Description
Philadelphia, 1831. No binding. Fine. Map of the United States. Entered according to Act of Congress in the Clerks Office of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, October 10th, 1831. [Philadelphia], 1831. Folding map on four sheets joined. Folding into original covers, 8vo (binding size: 9 5/8 x 6 1/2 in.), red half morocco over marbled paper boards, upper cover with gilt-lettered title label (corner and edges worn). The map and covers now apart and separately mounted for display. Historical BackgroundFirst edition, and the first wall map issued by Mitchell. This edition does not have the counties delineated and numbered. Ristow mistakenly says all editions have the townships (he means counties) numbered, but this one, the first, does not, thereby eliminating the index of counties and thus showing more of the western territory. This map predates the Traveler's Guide by 1 year, and thus is Mitchell's first ""original"" production, as opposed to the Finley material he reissued as the American Atlas and Pocket Maps. Copyright date is October 10, 1831. There is no other date on the map. Ristow thinks the map was issued in early 1832, but it is not in Phillips until 1834 edition (which probably has the counties indicated by number and the 1831 copyright), so Ristow may not have seen this edition, but rather the 1834.ReferenceKarrow 1-1473; Ristow p309.ConditionOriginal full color, the palette rich and bright. One 5-inch repaired tear at left (into Arkansas), some cracking and more minor tears at folds. Some overall browning of the sheet. In good condition.

Dublin: Hodges and Smith, 1851. First edition. Seven volumes, large 4tos. Contemporary half green morocco, green sand grain green cloth boards, marbled endpapers in a non-pareil pattern, all edges gilt, ribbon markers. Light wear to the bindings at the edges and hinges, else this is a very good set. With the bookplates of John Eacott Manahan and the arnmorial plate of H. L. A. The Annals are printed in the original Irish with English translation on the facing pages by O'Donovan. In Irish, with O'Donovan's English translation on facing pages, and copious footnotes. O'Donovan published the second half of the Annals in three volumes in 1848, which covered the years 1172 to 1616 AD. After the unexpected success of this publication, O'Donovan went back to the manuscript of the Annals and edited the first half, covering the years AM 2242 to AD 1171, publishing this part in three volumes in 1851. New title and final pages were supplied to buyers of the 1848 set, and binders were instructed to rebind the work into a single set of six volumes bound separately, plus an index volume of persons and places. The result is a set of seven volumes with title pages dated 1851.

Description
Vienne (Vienna): M. Auer, 1855. Very good. First edition in French (translated and published in the same year as the original Russian); 10 1/2 x 7; pp. 1-25, [7]; green wraps, printed and ruled in black; illustrated with three plates by Jos. Stoufs; lacking portrait frontis, else complete; tiny, white label to upper left corner; faint, discolored spot to margin of front wrap; small chips to tips of spine and slight curling to corners; scattered foxing, mostly to margins and verso of plates; in about very good- condition. Published anonymously, the booklet was allegedly written by Count Dmitrii Nikolaevich Bludov, alt. Dimitri Bloudoff (1785 - 1864) - a Russian noble, imperial official, and a member of the inner circle of Emperor Nicholas I. Over time, Bludov served as Minister of Justice, Minister of the Interior, Chairman of the State Council, and President of the Academy of Sciences. He was also a historian, author, founder of the Arzamas Literary Society, close friend of Turgenev, Karamzin, and Zhukovskii, and legal advisor to Nicholas, writing many of his speeches, editing the Code of Laws of the Russian Empire in 1841-1842, drafting a new Criminal Code in 1845, and presiding over the court that condemned the Decembrists to death. The book gave the official version of Emperor Nicholas' death, i.e. pneumonia resulting from an untreated cold, touting his unwavering Christian values and refuting the circulating speculations that the ruler had committed suicide, while the Crimean War was raging.
