Description
[Czechoslovakia]: Self Published, 1946. Near Fine. Original typescript memoir with original artwork by a Czech concentration camp survivor. Two volumes. 120; 120a-315 pp., paginated recto only, illustrated with 23 tipped-in pencil illustrations captioned in ink. Screw post binding in red and tan cloth over heavy boards, black topstain, ribbon marker to each volume. Near Fine with light wear and soiling to cloth and textblock edges; exceptionally sturdy binding has held up well. A detailed personal account describing the author's arrest and torture in Prague and subsequent internment in Theresienstadt (Terezin). Karel Berousek was a tram driver whose limited involvement in the Czech resistance earned him a visit from the Gestapo in 1942. He was held and interrogated in Pankrac Prison, which had been commandeered as a Gestapo headquarters and staffed with Waffen SS guards. The German authorities decided that his crimes warranted imprisonment rather than execution in the prison's notorious guillotine room, and Berousek was transferred to Theresienstadt, a notorious work camp and departure point for tens of thousands of Jews sent east to their deaths. Within the fortress Berousek endured brutal living conditions, the arbitrary cruelty of guards, and hard labor on an empty stomach. He was then released suddenly and without ceremony, walking out in flea-infested clothes. The former tram driver was made to sign a nondisclosure agreement by the Gestapo after arriving back home, and he kept his head down and worked as a welder until his county's liberation from German rule. Berousek then wrote a memoir, which he finished in April 1946, in order to lift his depression and answer the questions of whose loved ones had never returned from the camps. The result is a valuable, unique narrative of an ordinary man under extraordinary pressure.

Description
Lyon: Hilaire Baritel, 1694. Folding engraved plate. 19th-century calf-backed marbled boards. A good copy. First edition of this lengthy explication of occult talismans, pentacles, hieroglyphs, monuments, and characters found in esoteric ritual. Written by a Jesuit scholar, the text classifies enigmatic images according to their context and meanings without prejudicing Christian over pagan symbols. He identifies enigmas in Bible verses, classical poetry, the Kabbalah, and published prophecies and offers possible explanations and his reasoning. Menestrier here seeks to distinguish between true and false enigmas to elucidate nuanced religious texts. He categorizes false symbolism as poetic or allegorical, which confuse readers looking for deeper meaning. His discussion includes the prophecies of Nostradamus and the Biblical Apocrypha; he attempts to decode their enigmatic language while denouncing their intentional vagueness. This book includes the first discussion of the prophecy of Malachi on the succession of the popes. Caillet 7376; Enenkel, Jesuit Image Theory 83 and 125.

Description
Paris, 1811. Engraved frontispiece portrait and 90 woodcut vignettes, one folding table. Later wrappers made from printer’s waste (worn). Uncut. Old armorial stamp on advertising leaf. In good, original condition. First edition, the only copy located, of this monographic cheat-sheet to winning the French lottery. The text expounds on lottery operations in both Paris and Brussels, offering mathematical commentary on the likelihood of a draw and financial risks to players. The author takes his assessments further into the esoteric, though, and weighs in on the influence of the zodiac, secret societies, dream interpretation, and cabalistic numerology on the outcome of the game. Fifty pages comprise an alphabetic list of dream motifs and their corresponding lottery numbers, and a further twenty list dream narratives and what fortune they denote. The publisher/author named his work for Alessandro Cagliostro (1743-1795), an Italian magician who dazzled courts across Europe with his performances of divination and alchemy. A figure shrouded in mystery and occultism, Cagliostro’s reputation inspired copycats and storytellers for decades after his death. The Loterie Royale was established in 1776 as a public revenue interest. It was abolished during the French Revolution, from 1793-1797. Each lottery drawing consisted of five numbers, each between 1 and 90. The author provides all the lottery drawings from its reintroduction in 1797 until 1811 for readers to identify patterns or correlations. The publication date of this edition is derived from the last lottery number recording table, which is only filled out until April of that year.

Barcelona: M. Moleiro Editore, 1996. FIRST EDITION OF THE FACSIMILE. With 242 decorated miniatures. Full calf with gilt border on both covers, red Moroccan spine decorated in gilt insignia, laurel wreaths, and stars; painted endpaper and gilt dentelles. Preserved in a red Moroccan and gilt case. Fine, as if never opened. First edition of this gorgeous facsimile, No. 649 of 987 printed. The Libro del caballero Zifar was the first adventure story ever written in Spain. Dating to the early fourteenth century, this adaptation of the life of Saint Eustace infuses chivalric drama with Christian ideals. It follows Zifar, a knight who becomes a king after being forcibly separated from his family. One of the most important Spanish romances, the text also showcases the international scope of literature of the period, drawing on Arabic stories, geography, and science. The authorship of the manuscript has been debated. It was likely written by Ferrand Martínez, a cleric from Toledo and secretary of Alfonso X of Castille, who appears as a character in the prologue. This facsimile reproduces the “Paris Manuscript,” one of two located in the Bibliothèque Nationale that transmitted the text; the third original is located in the National Library of Spain. Our copy includes the original signed certificate of authentication laid in. (offered with) RICO, Francisco & RAMOS, Rafael eds.) Libro del caballero Zifar. Códice de París. Barcelona: M. Moleiro Editore, 1996. Folio. 330 pp. With 157 colored illustrations. Burgundy cloth with the original dust jacket. A fine copy, as if never opened, with a signed advertisement letter from the publisher. First edition. A richly illustrated volume of essays to accompany the Libro del caballero Zifar facsimile. Several Spanish scholars of Medieval literature and history provide a guide to the text and illustrations, situating it within fourteenth-century Spain and manuscript historiography.

Description
Manresa: Ignacio Abadal, 1785. FIRST EDITION. marbled wrappers. First edition. Little appears to be known about Dr Jaime Menós other than his presence as physician to the Spanish expedition against Algeria in 1775. As with today’s anti-vaxxers, his arguments protesting inoculation against smallpox were legion: inoculation caused as many deaths as smallpox; the medical basis for inoculation was ill founded; inoculation increased the danger of infection from smallpox and from other diseases; that it provided no protection against other poxes, etc. Francisco Salvá, the champion of inoculation published a reply under the nom de plume Dr. Gil Blas (Barcelona, 1786), and in turn there was a counter-counter attack (Madrid 1787). One of the fine early polemics on vaccination. OCLC locates 4 copies in America (Yale, NYAM, NLM, Duke); Palau. 1645494.

Description
Philadelphia: Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co., 1854. FIRST EDITION. Contemporary calf, spine label, boards a bit worn and corners a bit rubbed; intermittent foxing, overall a very good copy. First edition of the author’s observations and reflections on his practice of medicine, mostly on the Texas frontier. Luckily for the reader, he dispenses with the “history” of medicine (in general) in the preface, so his text is focused on present-day activities. Despite each chapter appearing to be a standard discussion on various anatomical and physiological ailments (such as fevers, inflammation, the brain, the spleen, diseases of the stomach, venereal disease, etc.), his approach is most definitely bent toward his experiences treating patients outside of an urban environment, with a particular “Southern touch.” For example, an extremely important factor in maintaining health would be bathing, and Massie takes great pains to explain the difference between hot and cold water and their effects, when and where to utilize each, and the danger of failing to bathe. Massie (1816–1879), born in Winchester, Virginia, migrated to Texas before 1850, where he bought a plantation east of Houston. His 1854 Treatise on the Eclectic Southern Practice of Medicine was intended to introduce physicians to medicine on the frontier. In 1861 Massie was mustered into service with the Confederate Army as a lieutenant colonel, though he never saw acttion. Following the war, Dr. Massie continued to practice medicine and manage his business concerns in Galveston and his plantation in Harris County. Cordasco 50-1224.

Description
30/03/1813. The Compensation Act of 1789 set the salary of a chief justice of the Supreme Court at $4,000, and it remained that amount until 1819 when it was raised to $5,000. So John Marshall received $4,000 in his early years in that office, and the salary was paid in quarterly payments of $1,000 each.Autograph document signed, Washington, March 30, 1813, to William Whann, the Cashier of the Bank of Columbia, being a check or pay order to collect his salary. “When my quarter salary which will become due on the first of April shall be received, you will please to pay to James Brown esquire or bearer the sum of one thousand dollars.”This brief order illustrates how federal salaries were collected back then. The funds became available at a bank depository, which was the Bank of the United States until its charter ran out in 1811. Thereafter much of its business was conducted by the Bank of Columbia, until the Second Bank of the United States was up and running in 1817. The federal employee - in this case John Marshall - wrote to the cashier of the bank - in this case William Whann - with instructions on how to dispose of it. John Brown was Marshall’s trusted secretary, so we would speculate that this James Brown was a kinsman of his and acting as a personal assistant to Marshall. So we would suggest that Marshall wanted to collect this salary for his own use. This is our first document of Marshall collecting his salary as Chief Justice.

Bruxelles: Edite par le Comité International de Defense de I'Idee Olympique/ Imprimerie BOLYN, 1936. Original document. Softcover. vg to near fine. Quarto (9 3/4 x 7 3/4"). Unpaginated, 8 leaves, each folded vertically and printed in two columns, creating a thinner brochure format. Original color illustrated wraps with black lettering on cover, protected by modern mylar. An extremely scarce Anti-Nazi brochure campaigning to boycott the Winter Olympics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in 1936. The work published by the International Committee for the Defense of the Olympic Idea, an organization founded during the antifascist congress (First International Congress of Writers for the Defense of Culture) in Paris in 1935. The brochure is folded vertically in the middle presenting German propaganda on the left of the cover and second page, anti-Nazi content on the right. This pattern is repeated on pages six, seven and eight while the other pages feature anti-Nazi statements exclusively. The cover features an Olympic poster showing a German skier with equipment and Hitler salute on the left, famously designed by Ludwig Hohlwein, and the identical motif on the right fold with Swastika instead of the Olympic Rings on his chest and holding a bloody sword in his left hand with a holstered pistol strapped around his waist. The text here reading "access prohibited for Jews," with Garmisch-Partenkirchen Tourist Office as header. Hohlwein was a pioneer of commercial art with an output of some 3,000 commercial art works by the year 1925. During the reign of the Nazis Hohlwein worked closely with Reichs-Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels. Page two features a statement by Bruno Malitz, NSDAP district leader in Görlitz, on the left. The right half features a New York cartoon showing Hitler, Göring and Goebbles in sports gear executing a haphazard Hitler salute with an anti-Nazi blurb from the London "Times" beneath. Page three features a statement by the American 1932 Olympic decathlon champion James Bausch (Jarring Jim) listing the measures against German Catholics in sports measures taken by the Nazi administration from 1934 through 1935, calling for a boycott of the 1936 Olympics by American athletes. The right half shows a "Temps" blurb regarding the compulsory youth and military service instituted in Nazi Germany with a b/w photograph depicting Jewish children being chased out of a public bath in Mannheim. The centerfold features a statement by Czechoslovakian marathon champion Oskar Heks opposing the Berlin Olympics deeming participation to be equal to sanctioning the Hitler regime, accompanied by a list of Nazi measures from 1933 to 1936 taken against German Jews in sports matters. The upper right corner features a cartoon showing a uniformed Nazi whipping a person lying on the ground. A comment points to the expulsion of the Jew Fritz Rosenfelder from a sports club he had founded, as published in a sinister note by the magazine "Der Stürmer." The right half features a photograph from the Oranienburg concentration camp showing an inmate collapsing during an obstacle course, surrounded by Nazi soldiers. Underneath a statement by US Supreme Court Justice J. T. Mahoney declaring the Olympic Games in Berlin a propaganda tool of the Nazis. Page six features a photo showing Hitler, Goebbels and Ernst Rohm with a headline regarding Rohm's assassination and a note the looting of the premier sports institute in Leipzig in the amount of one hundred million Marks to benefit the Nazi sports organization. Column two with four caricatures headlined "Camp Instructions" and a statement by the Belgium water pool player Maurice Blitz stressing the Olympic idea as being a fraternity in honest struggle with respect for the adversary. But who today would dare to claim that the Olympic Games in Berlin deserve such and interpretation. Page seven is headlined "Physical Culture in the III. Reich" showing a photograph with men lined up against a wall with their hand up secured by a group of policemen. Underneath a quote from the German Sports Manual: "a true sportsman must not limit himself to contributing to the fight against the Jews, but he must also help to isolate the Aryans who do not subscribe to the eviction of the Jews." The right column features quotes with notes aimed at foreigners from various European sources and newspapers. The two columns on the last page feature a statement German poet Hans Johst headlined "Propaganda for abroad" announcing that Jews and non-Aryan Germans are prohibited from participating in the Olympic art competitions. The column on the right is a statement by Justin Godard, former Minister of Health, headlined "The Heirs of Greek Civilization..." and we think rather that today's Germany would have burned the literary masterpieces of Aeschylus and Herodotus, forced into exile Plato, imprisons Demosthene who directed his "philippics" against Philip of Macedon who enslaved the party! Text in French. Light wear along edges and lightly age-toned. Wrappers in very good, interior in near fine condition overall.

Description
1944. Olson, Laverne Edwin, vernacular photo album (circa 1944-1946) documents U.S. Navy enlisted service across the Philippines and Hawaii during the final phase of World War II and the immediate postwar occupation period, providing direct visual and documentary evidence of military presence, local communities, and wartime social life in the Pacific Theater. The album is anchored by Olson's official U.S. Navy Certificate of Satisfactory Service confirming duty from December 18, 1944 through April 23, 1946, situating the material within the aftermath of the U.S. return to the Philippines following the Leyte landings and the transition into occupation and reconstruction. The photographs support research into Pacific War military infrastructure, American servicemen's daily life, and interactions with local populations in recently contested and strategically critical regions. Album titled "Snapshots: The Philippines and The Islands of Hawaii," compiled circa 1944-1946, contains 25 items: 23 silver gelatin photographs, one wallet-sized U.S. Navy Certificate of Satisfactory Service, and one Roosevelt Commemorative Birthday Ball exchange coupon dated January 30, 1946. Album measures approximately 4.5 x 3.5 inches, with most photographs approximately 4 x 2.5 inches. Images include candid and landscape views from the Philippines, likely including Leyte, depicting rural villages, shoreline activity, docked naval vessels, and local labor such as fishing and canoe transport. One photograph shows a group of Filipino children and young men gathered along a beach, while another captures men and boys navigating shallow coastal waters in a canoe. Hawaiian images include group recreation scenes and coastal landscapes, reflecting off-duty life within a major U.S. naval hub. The Roosevelt Birthday Ball coupon, printed with the slogan "Dance That Others May Walk," provided access to multiple Honolulu venues and connects the album to wartime charitable campaigns supporting polio treatment through organized social events. Created during the closing campaigns of the Pacific War and the first year of U.S. postwar presence in the Philippines, the album situates an enlisted sailor within a broader military and geopolitical transformation that included amphibious warfare, territorial reoccupation, and the reestablishment of American administrative and logistical systems. The Philippines served as a critical site of both combat and reconstruction, while Hawaii functioned as a central staging and support base for naval operations. The inclusion of both official documentation and leisure-related ephemera demonstrates how military service encompassed bureaucratic recordkeeping, mobility across strategic locations, and participation in organized morale and fundraising activities tied to the American home front. Light wear to album covers, minor handling and edge wear to photographs, with images remaining sharp; service certificate shows toning and wear; pages largely intact. Overall very good condition.

Description
1943. [African American] [Education] Alexander, Fred M. Education for the Needs of the Negro in Virginia. Washington DC: The Southern Education Foundation. First Edition Hardcover No Dust Jacket, 1943. 297 pages. Measures 6.25" x 9.25". The book proposes that the rapid acceleration of social chance in Virginia has required the education system to make changes to accommodate the black scholars. The stated reasons for the study by the author include: "There is general concern among all classes of people for improving the social and economic conditions of all underprivileged people," "Education opportunities and facilities for Negroes in Virginia are below a reasonable standard for social effectiveness" and "Negroes are becoming increasingly conscious of their educational needs and are organizing to urge more adequate facilities." The book is broken up into different educational sections and also includes several graphs, charts and other index sections. Gold gilt lettering with Title & portrait of John P. Slater in seal on boards. Gilt lettering on spine. Cloth is dark green. Binding tight and pages are clean. In very good condition.

[no discernible wear to book, although a handful of pages have short diagonal creases at the upper corners from having been turned down as markers (why, oh why? -- this is why BOOKMARKS were invented, people!), and the former owner's initials plus date & place of purchase are written in ink on recto of rear endpaper; the jacket is flawless apart from some very slight wrinkling at the bottom of the rear panel]. (B&W photo frontispiece) A collection of short stories by Capes (1854-1918), including "some of the most imaginative tales of terror of his era: stories of werewolves and the Wandering Jew, of lost souls and vengeful suicides, of horrors from beyond the grave which enfold the unsuspecting." This is an expanded edition of a book first published in 1989, "augmented by a further eleven stories, most of which have not been seen since their original book publication more than eighty years ago. Lamb's revised introduction also makes use of new biographical information which has only recently come to light, providing the most comprehensive look available at this forgotten master of terror." This first printing was limited to 600 copies. .

Description
[New Haven, 1865. Printed ticket to the Wooden Spoon junior prom at Yale. 2-1/4" x3-1/2." Lightly dusted, small hole at lower left blank corner. Else Very Good. The "presentation of the Wooden Spoon, a custom going back to the earliest days of the promenade" [NY Times article, 7 March 1942], was the highlight of Yale's annual Junior Prom. "Beginning in 1847, the ceremony centered around the presentation of a wooden spoon to the member of the junior class with the lowest grades - or 'appointments,' as they were called. This event was not without pomp and circumstance: elaborate speeches were made, the band played, the class sang 'Song of the Spoon' and the event was rigorously covered by the New York Times. Pretty soon, to receive the wooden spoon became a glamorous status symbol. The original custom of giving the spoon to the 'greatest glutton' in his class was lost. The recipient was then chosen, as described by an 1856 New York Times article, for 'his powers as a wit, his talent as a speaker, or his capacity to please the ladies' or in more modern terms, 'Mr. Popularity'." [A fanciful trip into Yale's leisure past, Yale Daily News online 9 March 2026.] See, The Wooden Spoon Exhibition, The Yale Courant, Vol. 1, No. 27 (JULY 4, 1866), p. 111 (1 page), available at JSTOR online.
