Important Caution. Beware of a Pair of Bipeds, That Have Lately Escaped, The One from Jail, The Other "Cut out for a Sawyer but Made Up a Lawyer," From the Weddington-Lane Menagerie, And are Now Haunting this Neighbourhood in Shape of an Overseering Baboon and a Porcupine-Backed Lawyer. [N.p. (Warwickshire?)]: Printed by Tympan, Frisket, & Co, Rib Row, Expose, [c.1850]. 15" x 10-1/2" " (38 x 27 cm) broadside, mounted, cut piece of letter laid down near center reading: "Yours resp[ectfull]y Wm Oram 43 Monday evening." Light browning and soiling, a few minor chips and some rubbing to edges, three horizontal fold lines. A curious, rare item. $1,850. * The text of this anti-lawyer satirical broadside continues (in part): "The Public are particularly Cautioned against the depredations of the above-named FILTHY ANIMALS, as they are known to be peculiarly attached to that which is not their own:---i.e. 'Rates'." William Oram may have been the author of the broadside text. The imprint is fictitious, but the "Weddington Lane" in the title refers to a street in Warwickshire. Description
London: Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans,, 1846. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Full green cloth with blindstamped borders and central device, title in gilt to spine panel, light yellow endpapers, large folding map frontis, 391 pp. + 32 publisher's ads. Old label to spine, "Bound by Westleys & Clark" label to rear endpapers, previous owner has written their name/address on first page & rear endpapers. Map looks great, some pages unopened. "Published in January of the year that England and the United States would finally agree on the Oregon Question, Twiss' book provided legal ammunition for England's claim to the territory north of the Columbia River. This is the counterpart to Greenhow'sMemoir (which is frequently attacked by Twiss). Twiss was a brilliant jurist, and if the Question had been left to technicalities of international law, England's claim might have carried the day with Twiss' guidance" (Givens, Oregon 100)

Publisher's decorative cloth, red cloth backstrip with lettering stamped in black; red and gold patterned dust jacket; 8vo; pp. [4], 230. Book is very near fine, with just a little light rubbing at spine tips and along edges of boards. Dust jacket somewhat sunned along spine; and lightly chipped along the edges (including a large chip at tail of spine, not affecting text); but presents very nicely in mylar. An excellent copy of the author's first book, with a warm inscription, marking his time at Princeton.

Description
San Francisco: Louis Roesch Co, 1890. Very Good. Single leaf, red-brown color, some tears and small chips along the edges. Advertisement for a school children's "Play Day" at the Sutro Baths in San Francisco, which included bell ringing, acrobatic feats, dancing, and a special performance from the London Patomime and Comedy Company. The Sutro Baths (1896-1966) was a public saltwater swimming pool in San Francisco, built and owned by entrepreneur and former mayor of San Francisco Adolph Sutro, and heralded at its opening as the world's largest indoor swimming pool. Sutro's idea was to provide an inexpensive recreational swimming facility, mainly for the working class of San Francisco. In true progressive spirit, Sutro also included natural history exhibits at the entrance to the baths as an educational opportunity. However, due to their high maintenance and operating cost, the baths were eventually converted to an ice skating rink, and then sold in 1964 to property developers. A fire in 1966 destroyed what remained of the baths. Throughout its lifetime, the Sutro Baths were the setting for a handful of films, including two short films in 1897 by Thomas A. Edison and the 1958 American film noir, "The Lineup." This leaf was likely an early promotional piece for the Sutro Baths.

Description
London: Africa Bureau, 1966. First Edition. Slim octavo (21.5cm); stapled wrappers; 12pp. Trivial wear to extremities, else Fine. "The overwhelmingly important question in the Rhodesian crisis is now Rhodesia's vulnerability to economic sanctions. It is difficult to be exact in economic terms; we can only make rough estimates. It is even more difficult to say what the political effect of the economic damage may be. It is important to appreciate as accurately as possible the economic effects; the final conclusion about the effectiveness of sanctions must, however, be a political one" (from introduction).
