Description
London: Seyffert, 1758. Swammerdam, Jan (1637-80). The book of nature; or, the history of insects. . . . With the life of the author, by Herman Boerhaave. Translated from the Dutch and Latin original edition, by Thomas Flloyd. Revised and improved by notes from Reaumur and others by John Hill, M.D. 2 parts in 1, folio. [6], xx, [6], 236; 153, lxiii, [12]pp. 53 engraved plates, a few by Swammerdam. London: C. G. Seyffert, 1758. 440 x 274 mm. (uncut). Quarter calf, marbled boards in period style. Edges a bit frayed, light toning, but very good. First Edition in English. See Dibner 191. Despite a scientific career that lasted only a dozen years, Swammerdam was one of the outstanding comparative anatomists of the seventeenth century. His most remarkable work was in the field of insect anatomy, which he undertook in order to disprove Aristotle's claims that insects lack internal anatomy, develop by metamorphosis (sudden and complete transformation) and arise from spontaneous generation. By refining his techniques of microdissection and injection to the point where he could use them on the smallest and most delicate anatomical parts, Swammerdam was able to illustrate for the first time the complex internal structures of insects, including their reproductive organs; and to demonstrate the gradual development of an insect's adult form throughout all its larval stages. These observations are "indubitably the foundation of our modern knowledge of the structure, metamorphosis and classification of insects" (Cole, p. 285). In addition, Swammerdam performed valuable investigations of crustaceans, mollusks and frogs, and was the first to prove experimentally that muscles do not increase in bulk when contracted via nerve stimulation. The Biblia natura, Swammerdam's major work, was published fifty-seven years after his death by Herman Boerhaave (1668-1738), who assembled it from unpublished manuscript materials integrated with a slightly revised version of Swammerdam's Historia insectorum generalis (1669). Boerhaave's biography of the author, which prefaces the work, remains the chief published source of information about Swammerdam's life. The English translation of Biblia natura was prepared by the physician John Hill (1716?-75), author of several botanical treatises (including the monumental Vegetable System [1759-75]) and a host of miscellaneous works. Brazier, Neurophysiology in the 17th and 18th Centuries, pp. 40-45. Cole, History of Comparative Anatomy, pp. 270-305; Library of Early Medicine & Zoology, 731. .

London: J. Cassell, 1853. One of George Cruikshank's Teetotalling Pamphlets With Eleven Fine Woodcut Engarvings CRUIKSHANK, George. The Glass and the New Crystal Palace. With cuts. London, J. Cassell, 1853. First edition of this pamphlet against alcohol. Octavo (8 3/4 x 5 1/2 inches; 222 x 140 mm.). 32 pp. Eleven woodcut engravings in the text. Bound ca. 1900 by Tout in three quarter dark green morocco over marbled boards, ruled in gilt, spine with two raised bands, decoratively tooled and lettered lettered horizontally in gilt, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, others uncut. Publisher's front and rear yellow printed wrappers bound in. The vignette on the title-page is repeated on the front wrapper. Front wrapper and title-page nearly detached, otherwise a near fine copy. One of Cruikshank's teetotalling pamphlets inveighing against the opening of the Crystal Palace on Sundays and the attendant sale of alcoholic beverages. With the distribution and consumption of alcohol permitted in the New Crystal Palace, Cruikshank "protested, with some justice, at the hypocrisy that permitted the rich unlimited indulgence while circumscribing the pleasures of the poor. Although several of the illustrations take a light-hearted view of the subject, the pamphlet jabs with right and left" (Patten, II, p. 325). Cohn, 203.

NY: Funk and Wagnall's, 1966. 1st Edition. Hardcover. VG+/Very Good. First edition with an atypical and personal sketch by Sloane on teh ffe. Typically, Sloane sketches covered bridges or tools or whatever is the subject of his book to the inscribee. In this case, Sloane has sketched a Christmas greeting from one couple to another which recalls a shared vacation "(on) the banana boat" and a shared joke about a formation of clouds that resembles a woman's breast and torso; the observing couple, looking skyward, proclaim "look there's a cumulus boobilus". All in all, highly unusual for a Sloane sketch. Dustjacket a little bit worn. A solid - and collectible - copy.

Description
London: Henry Sotheran & Co, 1878. First edition. Full Calf. Very Good. 8vo. 22 by 14 cm. Title leaf, table of contents, then eleven etchings, each given in two states, one hand-colored, the other, without color, and in each of these etchings is presented on eight leaves, for a total of sixteen plates. Following the plates are many blank leaves which allowed for the binding to have some thickness and a title label on the spine. Thackeray was an accomplished caricaturist, but we should be glad that a Cruikshank he was not, and that in time he chose to concentrate on the written word for his sustenance. Bound in full calf by Bradstreet's. Bookplate with section and shelf lines, but we believe this is for a private library. No other signs that can be interpreted as ex-lib. Spine leather darkened. Chips to spine labels. Tight and clean within.
