Stiff card wraps
Description
London: Dean & Son, 11 Ludgate Hill, 1859. Poor. Stiff card wraps. 4to. Bound in thin card with covers printed in color. 16 pp., printed on one side only, with eight full page hand-colored illustrations showing Punch and Judy, et al., in the upper portion with text and drummer below. Each plate has moveable parts operated by a lever at the foot which operates the movement in the upper window; in addition 3 of the drummers move when the tabs are activated. The drummers on the remaining pages have their arms in the form of tabs which fit into a slit in the page. They are affixed on the other side. There is nothing to suggest that they were ever intended to move. To the best of our knowledge all copies of this title have all puppets movable but only three drummers. It is as though Dean had intended to make them all movable but gave up on the idea. Later printing of this work have the drummers all immovable, printed on the page with the text reset to go around the illustrations. This is a very good copy of a truly rare item. There is general soil from use; several tabs have been strengthened or replaced, but all of the moveable scenes are operative. Montanaro, p. 69. The dating of this item is problematic, but likely about 1859. Montanaro suggests a date of 1860, but the Cotsen copy in the Diana Rexford Tillson collection has an inscription dated March, 1859. The rear board has the code 4000--3,59 which indicates a publication date of March, 1859. Dean and Son was the first publisher to produce movable books on a large scale. In the late 1850's, the firm can be credited with inventing another first: the use of a mechanism that moved or was animated by pulling a tab.

Description
London: Typographic Etching Company, 1880. Typographic etching, Sheet measures 19 3/4 x 28". Uncommon facsimile map issued by the Hakluyt Society, named after Richard Hakluyt (1552-1616), the influential English geographer and compiler of travel accounts. This map reproduces the Wright-Molyneux world chart, originally published in 1599 and derived from a 1592 globe by English globe maker Emeric Molyneux. The map first appeared in Edward Wrights seminal work, 'Certaine Errors in Navigation', which for the first time clearly articulated the mathematical foundations of the Mercator projection. Notably minimalist, the chart omits details for unexplored regions, leaving them blank. An early reference to the Great Lakes appears as Lake Tadouac. A decorative cartouche in the upper left bears the royal motto Dieu et mon droit 'God and my right' used by Queen Elizabeth I and later British monarchs (excluding those in Scotland). Curious details include the upside-down engraving of Estotiland, a legendary island from the apocryphal voyage of the Zeno brothers, and an early use of the name Canada, echoing its appearance on Forlani's 1560 Italian map. Condition: Even overall toning with light creasing; otherwise in very good condition. Provenance: from the collection of Polish artist Stanislaw Szukalski.

Description
York: W. Alexander, 1813. First octavo edition. Octavo (leaves 129 x 210 mm). There was also a quarto edition in 1813, generally described as a large-paper copy. Collating: xx, 227, [1 page errata]; complete including frontis and two folding plates. Contemporary calf rebacked to style with gilt and five raised bands to spine. Generally a bit shelfworn and rubbed, but a tight, square copy. All edges marbled. Marbled endpapers. Armorial bookplate to front pastedown. Original owner's notes on recto and verso of title page in ink: "Purchased at...8 Sept 1821. Visited the Retreat Saturday aftern., 8 September 1821...with cleanly appearance & admirable arrangement of buildings, the Inmates looked far happier than could have been expected. The Matron & her husband have the most benevolent countenances that we had ever beheld." Light scattered foxing throughout, else unmarked. An account of the groundbreaking work of the Tuke family and the Society of Friends for improving the care and dignity with which mental illness was treated. At a time when the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness was often inhumane, William Tuke stepped forward in 1796 to found The Retreat. Its goal was to create safe, pleasing, and dignified conditions for those being institutionalized; and from its inauguration, The Retreat kept its doors open to public visitors who may want to witness and document the conditions of its campus and patients. In the present work, William's grandson Samuel Tuke publicizes the institution's "internal economy of management" as well as its "mild system of treatment." Transparency is key to continued progress, Tuke asserts; and he wants the Retreat's successes to assist in further advances in the field. "The interests of humanity and science alike call upon us to communicate freely the discoveries we make or the failures which happen to us...If persons engaged in the management of the insane were more generally to publish the results of their observation, we might reasonably hope that the causes of this obscure and affecting disorder would receive some illustration." While William Tuke's work remains revolutionary in improving method of caring for the mentally ill, Samuel Tuke's book "helped popularise the approach...to use the moral treatment method for restoring self-esteem and self-control in individuals" suffering from a range of ailments (Quaker World). As awareness of the model spread, so too did institutions build on its principles, with hospitals emerging in the UK and US.
