Description
First edition. Framed photograph. Very Good. MAGNIFICENT LARGE ALBUMEN PHOTOGRAPH OF ULYSSES S. GRANT BY ABRAHAM BOGARDUS. An unusually large late (c.1880) photograph of Grant, post-presidency, in formal dress, sitting and in partial profile. Mounted on thick card with the photographer's credit and address ("A. Bogardus / 872 Broadway, NY") on matte below the photo. The photographer, Anthony Bogardus, was a photographic pioneer, described by the New York Times as "the best-known photographer in the United States" in his prime who took "the first photographs of Gen. Grant, Gen. Hancock, Samuel D. Morse, inventor of the telegraph; Horace Greeley, Henry Ward Beecher, and other equally well-known men." The engravers Currier & Ives produced an engraving based on this photograph, calling it "the last and best taken of General Grant". This very large (approximately 10x16 inches; 10.5x16.5 with mount) photograph also appears to have served as the model for a small carte-de-visit issued at the end of Grant's life. Albumen print. Contemporary or near-contemporary printing (1880-1890). On original thick cardboard mount with gilt edges. Archivally framed to an overall size of 17.25 x 23.5 inches. Light wear around edges of mount. A STUNNING LARGE IMAGE IN OUTSTANDING CONDITION.

Description
London: Henry Eversden, 1657. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. With 2 folding tables, woodcut initials and decorations throughout text. Contemporary calf, rebacked; new endpapers, fly-leaf plus first 3 printed leaves backed on thick paper. Overall quite a good copy with contemporary annotations and ownership inscriptions on the fly-leaf. First edition in English of Institutiones medicae (Leipzig, 1655), one of the author’s most significant works. Rivière (1589-1655) gives a comprehensive account of the nature and causes of illness; his extensive commentary covers physiology, pathology, therapeutics and instruments. Of special interest is a discourse on both the curative and harmful characteristics of various meats, spices, herbs and vegetables. This work is sometimes confused with another by the same author, the Praxis medica. Rivière is best remembered as the first to note aortic stenosis (see G&M). Garrison & Morton 2729; Hirsch-Hübotter IV, 830; Wing R1567.

(Retired) and the Executive Committee of the Byrd Aviation Associates express to Fayette R. Plumb, Inc. their enduring appreciation of the most valuable co-operation in the equipping of the Byrd Antarctic Expedition It is our privilege to attest, and we most gratefully acknowledge, that without such assistance the accomplishment of the Expedition in the Antarctic would not have been possible RE Byrd Leader James G Bush Chairman. Byrd Aviation Associates sent these certificates to several of their most important suppliers. The certificate is signed by Byrd and by Executive Committee Chairman James G. Bush. It is decorated with a thick border with twelve scenes depicting Antarctica, including penguins, seals, and a team of sled dogs. The large document has evenly browned overall, the Byrd signature is dark, and there are two tears that have been professionally repaired on the verso (and one of the tears touches the plane vignette at the top of the certificate). An unusual Byrd collectible.

Leather rubbed, ink name on first blank, pages foxed. 1836 Full-Leather. xxxiv, 320 pp. Full-leather, marbled endpapers. William Wordsworth (7 April 1770 - 23 April 1850) was an English Romantic poet who, with Samuel Taylor Coleridge, helped to launch the Romantic Age in English literature with their joint publication Lyrical Ballads (1798). Wordsworth's magnum opus is generally considered to be The Prelude, a semi-autobiographical poem of his early years that he revised and expanded a number of times. It was posthumously titled and published by his wife in the year of his death, before which it was generally known as "the poem to Coleridge". Wordsworth was Poet Laureate from 1843 until his death from pleurisy on 23 April 1850.--Wikipedia
