Description
Paris: Cuchet, 1783-1784; 1784; Amsterdam and Paris: Gueffier, 1785. FIRST EDITIONS. Second Issue of the first work, with the four-page "Supplément" at the end. 223 x 127 mm. (8 x 5"). Three separately published works bound as a three-volume set (the first work occupying the first two volumes).. Uniform contemporary orange paste-paper boards backed with marbled sheepskin, corners tipped with vellum, raised bands flanked by decorative gilt rolls, one red and one green morocco label. First work with a folding table and 14 ENGRAVED PLATES (nine numbered plates in first volume, five in second, two of the latter folding); second with three engraved plates; third work with one folding plate. First work: Darmon 51; PMM 229; Norman I, 769; Maggs Bros., "The History of Flight" 65. A hint of rubbing to extremities, intermittent minor browning, small rust spots, or offsetting in the text bed (largely due to inferior paper stock), four leaves with one-inch brown stain to text (nothing obscured), a couple of short marginal tears (from rough opening), but QUITE A FINE SET--the text clean, fresh, and well-margined, the plates with excellent impressions, and the binding remarkably well preserved, with few signs of wear. This is the second issue, with the rare "Supplément" (in the second volume), of the earliest account of the first public experiments with hot air balloons, and it is considered to be the first authoritative technical and historical work on aerostation as well as the first serious discussion of balloon travel as a practical possibility. The experiments were conducted by the Montgolfier brothers, Joseph (1740-1810) and Etienne (1745-99), who had been intrigued by the experiments of Cavendish and Priestly with "inflammable air." The eminent scientist Faujas (1741-1823), who was the promoter, financier, and chronicler of the Montgolfiers, quickly published this account after the brothers had launched a balloon at Annonay in June of 1783, then a balloon carrying some farm animals in September, and finally a balloon carrying Pilatre de Rozier and the Marquis d'Arlandes in November. This last flight--the first manned aerial voyage in history--covered five-and-one-half miles across Paris and lasted 25 minutes. Plate 8 here shows the two original aeronauts viewed from the terrace of Franklin's home in Passy. The third volume begins with a discussion of the inflammable gas used to lift the balloons, and gives a summary of Montgolfier's history of balloon flights. The final work sets forth another scientific innovation, an electrostatic machine that employed sheets of taffeta to create friction that produced static electricity. The Royal Academy of Sciences tested the machine and found it a great improvement--less expensive and less liable to accidents--than earlier machines that had used plates of glass. The work seems to be very rare: we could find no copy sold at auction in either RBH or ABPC. This is a most appealing set, its combination of works on inventions offering a glimpse of the popular fascination with emerging technologies, especially those related to flight, in the late 18th century..

Description
New York: Harvest House, 1964. Small quarto in comb binding (25.5 x 18 cm.), 64 pages. Illustrated. Index. FIRST EDITION. A cookbook of regional African recipes by Bea Sandler, restaurant consultant and food magazine editor. An expanded edition was released in 1970 by World Publishing Co. with the contracted title African Cookbook and re-issued again in 1993. The introduction to the 1993 edition notes that “The first publication of this book was ... the first volume on African cooking to appear in this country or anywhere outside of Africa.” The second half of that statement was incorrect, but it was indeed the first published in the U.S. The cookbook originated with Sandler’s role in planning the menu for The Tree Houses Restaurant at the African Pavilion of the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair. Sandler writes in the preface that after being given this task, “to our amazement we could not find an African cook book published in America,” though they were able to turn up a couple of volumes published in Africa, after which “we embarked on a long and complex testing program. We invited people who had been in Africa to participate in the testings and to advise us on the final selection of menu items.” Each chapter of the book “is designed to give you a complete luncheon or dinner as you would get it at the African Pavilion.” For instance, one chapter provides a complete “Couscous Menu” consisting of Groundnut Soup, Couscous Mauritania, a salad, and Mango-Banana Sundae. Other recipes in the book include “Tree House” Chutney, Curry of Beef Kenya, Chicken Moamba, Foo-Foo, and Nigerian Pancakes, as well as six recipes for alcoholic cocktails, including Paw-Paw Paradise and Tanganika Tonic. The lower portion of each page prints a description of one of the countries featured at the pavilion. Sandler went on to travel extensively around Africa, compiling recipes for her 1970 edition of this cookbook. This original World's Fair publication is very uncommon. One small pencil annotation to margin, otherwise internally clean and sound. Photographically illustrated covers are lightly rubbed, and with some bumping to corners, otherwise fine. 1770. First Edition. [JOHNSON, Samuel]. The False Alarm. London: T. Cadell, 1770. Slim octavo, period-style half brown calf gilt, red morocco spine label, marbled boards; pp. 53. $950.First edition, second printing—one of 500 copies issued one month after the first—of Johnson's controversial tract on the scandalous John Wilkes, found guilty of libel and initially blocked by the House of Commons from taking the seat to which he had been elected over his rival Col. Luttrell.""This, the first of Johnson's series of political pamphlets, all of which were anonymous, though their authorship was generally known, was composed at the request of the Ministry… It supported the action of the Ministerial majority in the House of Commons in assuming that the expulsion of a member of Parliament was equivalent to exclusion, and in asserting that Col. Luttrell (not John Wilkes, who had a great majority of votes) was the duly elected representative of Middlesex. The pamphlet, which was at once known to be by Johnson, was fiercely attacked, both in the newspapers and in separate productions"" (Courtney & Smith, 114). ""The decision to write these pamphlets was perhaps the most purely surprising of Johnson's life. For at least ten years he had been on a pedestal as the great lexicographer and moralist, the lawgiver on letters and on experience, above every conceivable battle. Now, suddenly, he descended into the arena and began laying about him… Quite probably a large part of the motivation was sheer enjoyment, the love of a free-for-all. Controversy, after all, is quite enjoyable, to write as well as to tread… Certainly, if the pamphlets of the 1770s had never been written, we should lack some of his most vigorous and exhilarating prose. The first of the four [The False Alarm] is a case in point… Johnson argues that the action of the House of Commons was constitutional, that Parliament has the right to make up its own mind and ought not to be influenced by shouting from the street. The pamphlet is interesting as marking the extreme point of Johnson's anti-populist feeling. His attitude is much the same as Shakespeare's; while allowing the inalienable human right to rise against a tyrant, he has no belief in the political wisdom of the populace… It is worth reading not only for its exuberant prose, but as a reminder that his deep humanitarianism did not spill over into democratic populism"" (Wain, Samuel Johnson, 281-82). First edition, Fleeman's second printing: with ""Second Edition"" on title page. Fleeman 70.1.FA/1b. Courtney & Smith, 113-15. Early bookseller notation to rear blank: ""Mr [John] Sewell No. 32 Cornhill.""A touch of offsetting to scarce half title, text clean, period-style binding handsome and fine.

Description
This Indiana little person, together with younger sister Eliza S. Nestel (1857-1937), debuted together in 1861 and toured the country as "Commodore Foote and the Fairy Queen," once even performing for Queen Victoria; in February 1864 they met President and Mrs. Lincoln at a White House reception. PS, heavy stock 5½" X 3½", n.p., 8 September 1906. Very good. Faintly age toned, with quite minor edge wear. Preprinted postcard, on the verso of which is a tiny printed full-length portrait of Charles and Eliza Nestel standing side by side later in life, with printed caption beneath "Commodore Foote and Sister / Royal, / American Lilliputians / Residence Fort Wayne, Indiana / U.S.A." Images appears at left, and in blank area at right Nestel pencils large and bold "Commodore Foote / & Sister / Sept 8' / /06." The famed brother and sister retired to their hometown of Fort Wayne, Indiana and spent the remainder of their lives there, dying within months of each other. Very scarce in this form. General Tom Thumb (Charles S. Stratton) and Commodore Foote were by far the most famed little persons of the 19th century, and their autograph material is seldom seen.

New. $450. * The "American Blackstone." A monumental work of continuing relevance, this reprint edition is prefaced by a new critical introduction by Paul Finkelman, President William McKinley Distinguished Professor of Law and Public Policy, Albany Law School and David Cobin, Professor, Hamline University School of Law, St. Paul Minnesota. Tucker's Blackstone is a key resource for understanding how Americans viewed English common law in the years following the adoption of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Based on his lectures at the College of William and Mary, St. George Tucker interprets Blackstone's often antidemocratic viewpoint in an American context. A strong proponent of the First Amendment, he elaborates a theory of free speech that is more expansive than in the English tradition. More recently, Tucker's Blackstone has been cited in numerous constitutional cases by the U.S. Supreme Court relating to "original intent." Reprint of the rare first and only edition. "Tucker's Blackstone became a standard reference work for many American lawyers unable to consult a law library, especially those on the frontier. It is impossible to measure its impact on American law, but it is clear that sales were strongest in Virginia, as could be expected; it was also widely used in Pennsylvania and South Carolina." William H. Bryson, The Virginia Law Reporter Before 1800 102. Tuck.

Description
Salford: City Fun Publications, 1981. First edition. Very good minus.. Early issue (December 7th, 1979) of this hugely influential Manchester-centric post-punk zine. John Peel called CITY FUN the most important zine of the period. It is an indispensable reference for the Manchester scene and the bands and labels that grew around it: Joy Division and New Order, The Smiths and The Fall, Factory Records and the Hacienda nightclub, etc. Founded by Andy Zero and Martin X in 1978, CITY FUN increasingly expanded its reach beyond the local music scene to the larger cultural landscape after its takeover by "classic feminist children of punk" (Fletcher) Naylor and Carroll. Contributors to this issue include Zero, Jeff Williams, Paul Barrowford, and a variety of anonymous and pseudonymous reviewers on The Fall, Ed Banger, The Cure (already in "danceable" "accessible" decline at the late date of 1979), The Jam, Madness, The Specials, and others. P.S., "Margaret Thatcher is an insane failure." 12'' x 8.5''. Original pictorial self-wrappers. Offset in black-and-white throughout. [8] pages. Moderate edgewear and creasing, some light staining and small closed edge tears.

Burlington, VT: Wells, Richardson & Co., 1880. First Edition. Very good. First edition, n. d. (ca 1880); 5 x 3 1/4; pp. 1-32; brown, illustrated wraps; 1", closed cut to spine along back wrap, else minor wear; illustrated with drawings; very good condition. Wells, Richardson and Company were well-known in the late 19th century for developing and manufacturing aniline dyes (under the trademark Diamond Dyes), baby food, and patent medicines. The current booklet, published as an advertisement, described the Diamond Dyes, the colors they achieved, the way they worked, and the various materials they would color (shoes, wood, ribbons, cotton, etc.). It also promoted their proprietary brand of food for babies and invalids - Lactated Food - and supplied testimonials of satisfied mothers. Lastly, it touted the benefits of Kidney-Wort (a proprietary medicine).

Description
quarto, two pages, plus stampless address leaf, formerly folded, in very good, clean, and legible condition. 1842 Ohio Democrat - an emigrant from South Carolina - attacks his Whig opponents. "…the new banking law is received here by the whigs – the Ohio Statesman [newspaper] has been in great [suspension?] to see the bill, it passed the house last evening, there was a meeting of merchants and others to take into consideration the propriety of petitioning the legislature for a Bank under the law. I understand that the law was generally approved of except by the Editor of the Times, who advised to wait until next winter and then… would elect men who would go in for Banking on safe principles etc. There is much said and it will be greatly relied on for the electioneering purpose that means have not been provided in some way for the payment of bonds on the public works and for the completion of them, the southwestern part of the state will be made to believe I am afraid that their interest has been entirely neglected while the Banks only have been attended to by the present legislature. I am in hopes something will be done before the adjournment of the legislature in this matter that will satisfy that portion of the state on this subject, not only that justice may be done but that the Democracy of the state may have a hearty cooperation of all sections of the state in the elections next fall. I find that an unusual amount of local business has this session been before the legislature this session and as far as I can ascertain merely introduced by whig members and as I have had a long acquaintance with whig finesse I believe that there was a studied design to take up the time of the legislature on matters of a local nature so as to make political capital out of it; some four years ago I was elected Prosecuting Attorney for Miami County and at the first term of the Court the indictments found by the grand Jury was increased from about 15 or 20 to 80 and during all of my term the Grand Jury being mostly whigs every things was raked up and little found and when the election came on to reelect a land bill was published signed by….Thomas (our senator) and John G. Belfort, the former was my predecessor, the latter clerk of the Court charging me with taking up all the time of the Court with perilous State actions to the prejudice of other business and great increase of county expense and it had its influence, I was not reelected although I succeeded in the conviction of every case (all most) of importance and my whig successor failed in every case for his two years in every trial. I state this as a fact to show the great length the whig party will go for party purposes and I believe that local business has been greatly increased by them for the purpose and to [?] business of importance and to lengthen out the session. I am in hopes however that Democracy may continue triumphant, you will pardon this hasty epistle but feeling a deep solicitude for the honor and integrity of our present legislature who have done more for the great body of the people in the regulation of the currency than has been heretofore…" A lifelong Democrat, Thomas Barrett emigrated to Ohio in 1824 from his native South Carolina, where he had commanded a militia company during the War of 1812. He apparently came from a poor family, as he had received so little education as a child that he was forced to attend the same elementary school as his young son. Upon arrival in Ohio, after teaching school for a few years in the small town of Troy, he studied law, mentored by a judge, and then went into politics, holding a succession of local offices – County Auditor, Prosecuting Attorney (mentioned in the letter), Associate Judge, Commissioner of Insolvents, and Troy Mayor. He watched his state swing back and forth between the Democratic and Whig Parties – both divided into factions, but the Whigs suffering most by losing votes to anti-slavery third party candidates until the new Republican Party finally took the state in 1856 and giving Lincoln a slim majority in 1860. Already in his 70s, Barrett took no part in the Civil War, and died soon after war's end.
