Description
Baltimore and Worcester County, 1865. Two documents affixed at top edge, measuring 9 x 6 ¾ and 14 x 8 ½ inches. Tape repairs at folds, some with heavy clear tape, else excellent, good condition overall. With the embossed stamp of the Board of Claims to first document and two revenue stamps affixed. Good. A pair of documents relating to the emancipation through military service of Thomas Massey of Maryland and compensation to his enslaver, Joseph Godrey, of Worcester County, Virginia. Massey enlisted in the 9th Regiment of the USCT in 1864, and in accordance with Order 329 of the U.S. War Department, Godfrey received compensation, which was not to exceed $300. The present documents “To facilitate recruiting in the states of Maryland, Missouri, Tennessee, and Kentucky, the War Department issued General Order No. 329 on October 3, 1863. Section 6 of the order stated that if any citizen should offer his or her slave for enlistment into the military service, that person would, "if such slave be accepted, receive from the recruiting officer a certificate thereof, and become entitled to compensation for the service or labor of said slave, not exceeding the sum of three hundred dollars, upon filing a valid deed of manumission and of release, and making satisfactory proof of title." (https://www.archives.gov/education/lessons/blacks-civil-war/article.html) The order was meant to provide financial incentives to enslavers following the Emancipation Proclamation earlier that year. We find a record of a Thomas Massey from Worcester County born in 1855, which would raise the possibility that he enlisted at age 9, or that the Thomas Massey in question in these documents is not findable in the genealogical references we checked.

Description
Pisis [Pisa]: Francesco Bindi, 1710. Second Edition. Leather bound. Good +. Quarto size, 160 pp., text in Latin. Dom Luigi Guido Grandi (1671-1742) was trained in theology and philosophy; while assigned to teach both fields in Florence he took an interest in mathematics. By 1707 he had gained such recognition in the field of mathematics that he was named court mathematician to the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Cosimo III de Medici. In 1709 he visited England and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society, in 1714 he was made a professor of mathematics at The University of Pisa (n.b., per Wiki). This is the second edition of the volume (originally published in 1703), this considered a more accurate version of the work. Through his studies of a curve in 1703, which later became known as the "witch of Agnesi", Grandi helped introduce Leibniz' ideas on calculus to Italy (ibid). Somewhat uncommon in the online marketplace, as of this writing we see only one other copy listed online. Please note that all text is in Latin. ___DESCRIPTION: Rebound in contemporary dark brown leather over boards, five raised compartments on spine with decorations in gilt, white label to upper spine with title handwritten in ink, all board edges with gilt decorations, all edges speckled red, marbled front and rear pastedowns, the first two sections with rubricated initial capitals, the work replete with diagrams and mathematical equations; quarto size (9 7/8 by 6 7/8), pagination: [i-ii] iii-xx (title, adendem statement, preface) 1-139, 140 (publishers advertisement). ___CONDITION: Overall a bit better than good; the leather binding smooth on the boards with very little wear, the corners bumped but not rubbed, a square textblock, the interior clean with just the slightest amount of foxing, the sole prior owner markings we see being two small notations at the top of the front free endpaper; the leather spine is dry with a small amount of loss at the tail, the paper spine label (a later, handmade label affixed over the leather) missing the upper half on the right side (with the left side lifting), lacking both free endpapers, the hinges tender (the boards still securely attached) several leaves have creases at the lower outer margin. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Description
[Chicago: the author; American Medical Association, 1909. Offprint, stapled in wrappers (21.3 x 14 cm.), 7 pages. [Title from cover]. Reprinted from The Journal of the American medical association, May 1, 1909. v. 52. p. 1397 and 1398. FIRST SEPARATE EDITION. A short but fascinating description of the tongue as an organ, one of very few which has more than solely its sense function. "The tongue, the nose, and the skin are the only organs of special sense which perform also other functions. The eye and the ear do nothing but see and here [contemporary anatomy may not see it that way]. The tongue also acts in prehension, mastication, deglutition, and speech." Edmond Souchon (1841-1924) was Professor Emeritus of Anatomy at Tulane University. But for a few tiny spots, internally clean and sound. In publisher's pale blue wrapper, titled in black. Small and very light stain along top of front wrapper panel, otherwise fine. [OCLC locates two copies (Historic New Orleans, Tulane)].
