Description
FIRST EDITIONS. Publisher’s cloth, many covered in protective brown paper. From the library of Robert S. Mullikan (1896-1986), winner of the 1966 Nobel Prize for chemistry. He was primarily responsible for the early development of molecular orbital method of computing the structure of molecules. His signature appears in Volumes 29-39. First printings. The biographical memoirs include a photograph and short biography of recently-deceased members of the National Academy of Sciences. Columbia University Press printed the Memoirs on behalf of the Academy through 1974; thereafter the Academy’s own press in Washington began publishing the books. Biographies of all members that passed away are included; we find such luminaries as Enrico Fermi, Thomas Hunt Morgan, Robert Andrew Millikan, Leo Loeb, William Castle, Arthur Compton, Robert Yerkes, Herbert Hoover, Leo Szilard, Edwin Hubble, Ernest Lawrence, Herbert Evans, Herbert Spencer Jennings, Harlow Shapley, Vannevar Bush and even Albert Einstein. All were members of the Academy.

Description
Paris: Bailliere et fils, 1897. FIRST EDITION. With 5 full-page and 14 text illustrations (2 plates sepia-coloured). Original front printed wrapper (extremely browned) bound into later half-vellum over boards, small tear in spine; sporadic brtowning throughout. First edition. The author incorporates the most up-to-date medical and scientific discoveries and applies them to this outstanding contribution to forensic pathology. Of major significance is his use of “Röntgen Rays” to uncover the often undetectable crime of infanticide. This was possibly the earliest medico-legal treatises to use x-rays to carry out analytical investigations. Brouardel (1837-1905), professor of legal medicine at the University of Paris, was one of the most notable experts on forensic medicine of the period. Many of his findings are still being used today. Brittain, Bibliographie des travaux Français de medecine legale, 153a (4); Garrison & Morton, 1752; Nemec, Highlights of Medico-Legal Relations, 469a.

Description
quarto, three pages, plus stamp less address leaf, formerly folded, some tape repairs along folds and fold intersections, else good. Browne was apparently a New Yorker who had become partners in a Charleston dry goods shop which had been in business selling carpets since the 1830s but was now offering imported British and French luxury cloths – cashmere, tweed, silk - and Irish linens to the city's elite. What he undoubtedly did not discuss with his clientele were his private political opinions, which can be deduced from this letter written a week after the presidential election. While at the head of the letter, he has written the news " - Buchanan Elected – ", he goes on to write his son, who was on a business trip to Cuba - "at one time we all thought that Fremont was in, had Pennsylvania voted for him, he would have been elected by a large majority – all of the Northern and Eastern States voted for him except Penn. N.Y. gave Fremont 25000 majority and Massachusetts 50000 – Ohio 20000 etc." Browne would hardly have won any friends in Charleston by his scarcely veiled enthusiasm for "The Pathfinder", first presidential candidate of the new anti-slavery Republican Party. As for the slavery issue, the letter does mention several "old servants" who asked to be remembered to young Browne, but they may have been emancipated Blacks, rather than slaves, not uncommon in Charleston. When the Civil War began, Browne himself remained in Charleston for a time, no doubt with conflicted feelings about Secession and the War. But his loyalties were never brought to the test as he died a year after the War began.
