A fine and fresh copy of the editio princeps of the Hippocratic corpus, a collection of texts assembled in the third century B.C
Description
Venice: Aldine Press, 1526. A fine and fresh copy of the editio princeps of the Hippocratic corpus, a collection of texts assembled in the third century B.C., including the Hippocratic Oath and many of the foundation texts of western medicine, traditionally attributed to the legendary physician and teacher Hippocrates of Cos. "It is uncertain which of them, if any, are directly connected with the historical physician Hippocrates of Cos, who flourished in the latter half of the fifth century B.C. Through the writings attributed to him Hippocrates is credited with developing the first system of empirical medicine based on clinical experience, and the Hippocratic Oath has long been regarded as expressing the fundamental ethical and moral standards of the medical profession" (Grolier, Medicine p. 3). The text was edited by Francesco Torresani, using a fifteenth-century manuscript now in Paris (BNF MS gr. 2141), with corrections provided by a second manuscript which belonged to Cardinal Bessarion (Venice, Bibliotheca Marciana MS gr. 269). This edition, comprising 59 works, includes some that were not included in the Latin translation by Marco Fabio Calvo published the previous year in Rome. "The Aldine Greek edition of Hippocrates marked a significant advance over Calvus’s Latin translation. As Franciscus Asulanus [Francesco Torresani] pointed out in his notice to the reader, it repaired a considerable number of accidental omissions and one long repetition that Calvus... made because he followed only one manuscript. Moreover, by presenting the original text, it laid the necessary foundation for all further philological and medical study of the corpus" (ibid).* Adams H-563; Durling 2316; Grolier, Medicine 1B; Stillwell 405 (with a detailed listing of contents) and 656; Norman 1077; Osler 142; Wellcome 3173.. Folio, (6), 233, (1) ff., the Aldine device on title and verso of last leaf, Greek type. Bound in eighteenth-century French mottled calf, gilt spine, brown morocco label. Title with some very slight marginal dustsoiling, else excellent.

Description
Amsterdam, 1636. No Binding. Near Fine. 15 1/2 x 20 1/4 inches. Fine original color; excellent condition; elegantly framed. A beautiful example of this classic Dutch map of Bermuda. As were most 17th century maps of Bermuda, Hondius' was based on Richard Norwood's 1618 chart, executed in behalf of the Bermuda Company. The map thus includes the parishes and tribes allotted to the company's principal members with their names included, most of which survive in one form or another to this day. The map vividly illustrates how hazardous the coastline of Bermuda was and is to shipping by the almost unbroken ring of crosses signifying wrecks surrounding the island. The engraving actually includes two maps of Bermuda of different scales. Nestled within the hook of the island is another, smaller depiction of Bermuda, placed there to show its position and size relative to Cape Cod, Nova Scotia and Virginia. (Roanoke, Cape Henry and Cape Charles are all named). This design proved confusing to some later copiers, who dispensed with the mainland in their renditions while mistakenly retaining the smaller "Bermuda," thereby transforming it into a small island off the coast of Bermuda. Palmer, MCS No. 19, map no. 8.

Description
Leipzig: Joh. Friedrich Gleditsch und Sohn, 1711. Hardcover. Very Good. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Three parts in one thick volume with an appendix and an index. 4to. [21.5 x 17 cm], engraved portrait frontispiece, [22], including title printed in red and black, 236, 422, 474, 84, [56] p., with 16 additional engraved plates and one woodcut vignette. Bound in contemporary stiff vellum, covers a bit soiled, spine spotted. Some minor fingersoiling on title and light even toning throughout, but generally a fresh copy, with good impressions of the plates. Scarce first and only edition of the first full-fledged study of the Greek Orthodox Church, extensively illustrated, and an important addition to the nascent German tradition of studying the history of religious traditions without partisan intent. Of particular interest for the theological underpinnings of church architecture. Heineccius was a Lutheran, and he pursues his object of study as an antiquarian and historian, not as a controversialist. The work deals with the foundation and early history of the church as well as contemporary religious practice, treating such topics as the calendar, architecture and ecclesiastical ranks and dress. Organized in three parts, the first covers early history; the second theology; and third contemporary practice. The numerous plates picture architectural ground-plans for churches, ecclesiastical accoutrements, costume, and a bird's-eye view of the patriarch's residence at Constantinople. Johann Michael Heineccius (1674-1722) was a well-known jurist, historian, preacher, and theologian, originally Dutch but living in Halle. Best known for the present work, he also made one of the first systematic study of seals (De veteribus Germanorum aliarumque nationum sigillis, 1710). * OCLC record.

Valencia: José Domenech, 1874. No Binding. Very Good. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Small 4to. [20 x 14.5 cm], 32 pp. including title-page. Unbound [as issued?]. Title page lightly toned, some light foxing. Generally good. Very rare first edition, and likely a pre-journal 'off-print,' of this report on the wines presented and judged at the Vienna World's Fair of 1873, with special focus on the wines of Spain, written by the chief of the Spanish Agricultural Commission.Santos' work begins with a description of recent advances in soil science and chemistry, including the work of Ramon Torres Muñoz de Luna, a chemistry professor at the University of Madrid, and especially Justus von Liebig, the recently-dead German chemist who revealed the role of nitrogen in plant science. He continues with a roll-call of Spain's award-winning exhibitors at the Vienna World's Fair, presenting a variety of products from soap to beeswax to foodstuffs, followed by an international roundup of the Fair's alcoholic offerings. These include wines from America, in which Santos notes "una predisposicion grande á imitar algunos de nuestros vinos," as well as tropical liqueurs from Brazil and Cuba, Belgian and English beers, and Japanese rice-wines. The centerpiece of the report is Santos' detailed list of the Spanish wines presented at the fair, totaling no less than 349 exhibits that garnered 249 medals and diplomas (only 15 less than the French). He then lists the award-winning exhibitors by region and vintners'-house and reviews the highlights of the winning wines, including an anecdote in which Francesc Gil Borrás, an early commercial producer of cava, won the day and the 'medal of progress' against the makers of the more prestigious Moet & Chandon champagne.Santos published an identically titled work in the business journal Fomento de Producción Nacional (Barcelona 1874, no. 186, pp. 7-26), and in Revista de España (vol .36, pg. 179, "28 Enero 1874). Judging by the date printed on the verso of the final leaf (January 15, 1874) and the pagination, this copy appears to be an off-print of the report, in which case it would possibly have been printed prior to the journals themselves.OCLC: No copies in US. Neurath, was the director of the museum for "Gesellschaft and Wirtschaft," and together with Gerd Arntz he developed a new language for quantitative information using icons. Gesellschaft und Wirtschaft was commissioned by the Bibliographisches Institut in Leipzig, and is one of the best-known examples of what was known as the "Viennese method of pictorial statistics" and which became known as Isotype. Description
Oblong octavo (101 x 160 mm. ). The first 8 measures. Notated in black ink on four staves, the four vocal parts incorporated into one stave. Inscribed below the quote: "Gesang der Pilger aus Tannhäuser, und der Sängerkrieg auf Wartburg ... von Richard Wagner." With the date "Janu. 3d, 1846" in the hand of the British concert manager and critic John Ella (1802-1888) at lower left, presumably the day on which Wagner both penned the quotation and presented it to Ella. Together with: An original 19th century photograph of Wagner, 82 x 53 mm. The composer is depicted half-length, turned left, with his right hand extending into jacket pocket. Together with: A 1-page (167 x 245 mm.) autograph statement in Ella's hand relating how he acquired the present autograph: "The property of Prof. Ella, 9 Victoria Square S.W, XI/113. Written in my Album and presented to me in Dresden as a memento of my visit & a token of friendship. This Autograph was exhibited in the 'Loan Collection' at South Kensington 1885 Jno Ella. Entered in collection list by John Belcher." The three items laid down onto a triple-windowed mat, 360 x 278 mm. Minor foxing to Wagner autograph; photograph slightly faded. The ensemble in very good condition overall. Tannhäuser, a grand opera in three acts to a libretto by the composer, was first performed in Dresden at the Hoftheater on 19 October 1845. "Wagner's text is a conflation of two separate medieval legends: those concerning Tannhäuser, believed originally to have been a crusading knight from Franconia, and the song contest on the Wartburg - drawing on a number of 19th-century versions, notably those of Ludwig Tieck, E. T. A. Hoffmann, Heinrich Heine, Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué and Joseph Eichendorff. The anachronistic linking of the two legends was originally made by Ludwig Bechstein, in Der Sagenschatz und die Sagenkreise des Thüringerlandes of 1835-8 (see Spencer 1976), and reinforced by a contemporary scholar, C. T. L. Lucas. ... The uncomprehending response of the audience at the first performance on 19 October 1845 was largely due to the inability of Joseph Tichatschek, the singer of the leading role, to grasp the principle of melos towards which Wagner was progressing. His abnormal vocal demands also took their toll on Wilhelmine Schröder-Devrient (Venus), his niece Johanna Wagner (Elisabeth) and Anton Mitterwuizer (Wolfram). However, by the mid-1850s the work had established itself in the repertory of more than 40 German opera houses. An invitation from Emperor Napoleon III to stage Tannhäuser in Paris led to one of the most celebrated débâcles in the annals of operatic history ... Tannhäuser, with its frequently abrupt contrasts and rudimentary motivic integration, falls well short of the mature Wagnerian music drama. Yet it marks a considerable advance over Der fliegende Holländer in the deployment of the orchestra, continues Wagner's preoccupation with the dramatic conception or 'poetic intent', and shows some awareness of what he later referred to as 'the beautiful, convincing necessity of transition'." Barry Millington in Grove Music Online "Tannhäuser is based on two German legends: 'Tannhäuser', the mythologized medieval German Minnesänger and poet, and the tale of the 'Wartburg Song Contest'. The story centers on the struggle between sacred and profane love, and redemption through love, a theme running through much of Wagner's mature work. One of the most famous parts from the opera is the 'Pilgrim's Chorus'. The theme of this chorus is already present in the overture of the opera and concludes this mighty stage work with the same music in the form of a majestic hymn, which glorifies the victory of pure love over sinful passion." Baton Music Online "Throughout his career Ella made regular trips to Europe, where he forged important contacts with foreign musicians. Thalberg, Meyerbeer and Berlioz were among his friends. ... John Ella contributed meaningfully to musical life in London during the 19th century and promoted many musicians and singers who are still regarded today as preeminent among their contemporaries. His published writings include Musical Sketches, Abroad and at Home (London, 1869, 3/1878) and Lectures on Dramatic Music and Musical Education (London, 1872)." Christina Bashford in Grove Music Online.

20, 28, 10; 14, 38; 22, 23, 25 folding leaves. Printed with metal movable type. One kwŏn of illustrations & seven numbered kwŏn in three vols. Small folio (334 x 220 mm.), orig. semi-stiff wrappers (rubbed), handwritten titles on upper covers, old stitching. [Hansŏng]: [Kyosŏgwan], colophon: 1759. A rare and early illustrated Korean edition of the Family Rituals, printed with musinja 戊申字 metal movable type at the royal publishing house, Kyosŏgwan 校書館. The Family Rituals, a collection of ritual prescriptions compiled by the great Neo-Confucian philosopher Zhu Xi 朱熹 (1130-1200), was one of the most influential ritual texts in Chŏson Korea, more widely read, studied, adapted, reprinted, and circulated than the earlier and more canonical Classic of Ritual (Ch. Liji 禮記) itself. This popularity of Family Rituals likely owed to the social influence of Confucian academies (K. sŏwŏn 書院), local educational institutions that rendered Confucian learning available and accessible to aspiring scholars. As Martin Gehlmann observes in “Ritual and Confucian Academies in Korea” (in All About Rites, Collège de France, 2023), the Family Rituals figured largely in classroom curricula and were well represented in the library holdings of the academies, to a large degree because it was “eas[ier] to digest” over the “bulky classic” of rituals (16). Furthermore, the practical and accessible nature of the Family Rituals lent itself to local adaptations by Korean scholars, many of whom “continued to produce ritual works based on the Family Rit[uals] in order to simplify or recontextualize its concepts for the Korean readership” (14). This early Korean edition of family rituals opens with about 35 woodcut illustrations of ritual grounds, ceremonial attires, layouts of shrines, designs of artifacts used in funerary processions, and so on. They are followed by the text of Zhu Xi’s Family Rituals, printed with the musinja movable type, cast in the year 1668 and transferred to the royal publishing house, the Kyosŏgwan, in 1672. The colophon on the last page, 己卯四月日芸閣校印, states that it was printed at the Kyosŏgwan in the fourth month of the kimyo year. Our copy appears to be the same edition as a digitized copy held in the National Library of Korea (일산古1252-37), which lists the publication date as 1759. Very good copy, with some light staining and worming, mostly marginal. Preserved in a jil. This edition of the Karye is very rare outside of Korea. We find two copies in WorldCat, both held at Columbia (50242238 & 35216490). Small red seals on the first folio of each volume read 憑驗.

Description
New York: Frederick A. Stokes Company. Near Fine in Good+ dj. 1933. First Edition. Hardcover. (with a Triangle Books (reissue) dust jacket) [a nice clean copy with just a touch of fading to the spine cloth, no significant wear, one-time owner's name plus date & place of purchase and a brief comment (all in ink) on the front endpaper; the jacket looks nice, but the verso displays a previous owner's home-grown "restoration" treatments, consisting of tape-reinforcement along the top and bottom edges and the spine, and some black-ink "touch-up" (not too excessive) mostly to the spine ends; there is also a long vertical crease along the right edge of the front panel]. First edition of the sixth Ellery Queen mystery, in which a down-on-his-luck ex-movie cowboy star is shot to death in full view of a crowd at a "wild west show" in New York -- the crowd, naturally, including Ellery Queen himself. The mismatched jacket (which was on the book as we received it) is probably from a circa 1940 Triangle reprint, which has replaced the original playing-card-motif jacket art with a photographic cover featuring a masked man -- which (although it doesn't say so on the book itself) is "Ellery Queen" himself, using the same head shot that was used on several of the original Stokes jackets, back when the publisher was still promoting the author as an unknown man of mystery (instead of a pair of cousins from Brooklyn). (A facsimile of the actual first edition jacket is available (not from us), however, should you wish to dress it up a bit more properly.) .

Description
New York/London: Harper & Brothers. Very Good+. 1931. 1st Edition (D-F). Hardcover. (no dust jacket) [good sound copy, lightly shelfworn, spine lettering a bit dulled, faint beverage ring on rear cover, large vintage bookplate on front endpaper (apparently pasted on top of the same individual's ownership signature; see Notes)]. (B&W photograph, facsimiles, cartoon) A collection of short pieces, by a number of its contributors and editorial staffers, lamenting the recent demise of The New York World, which began publication in 1860 and was purchased by Joseph Pulitzer in 1883. Under Pulitzer's ownership (until his death in 1911) the newspaper pursued an aggressive editorial policy, combining sensation, sports, sex and scandal into a stew that spawned the term "yellow journalism," and that essentially changed the face of American newspaper publishing, and made The World the largest-circulation daily in New York City. When it was put up for sale by Pulitzer's heirs in 1931, the owner of the Scripps-Howard chain (publisher of the Evening Telegram) seized the opportunity and bought The World for the sole purpose of shutting it down to eliminate the competition. The shutdown was accomplished so abruptly that, in the words of city editor Barrett, the staff "really never had a chance to cover its death adequately"; thus this volume was conceived, and was in print a mere three months after The World published its last edition on February 27, 1931. Among the more than two dozen contributors represented here are Frank Sullivan, F.P.A. (Franklin P. Adams), Walter Lippmann, Harry Hansen, Heywood Broun, and Dudley Nichols. NOTE that the bookplate is that of screenwriter William Rankin, who had a string of mostly undistinguished story credits in the 1930s and 1940s, and that it appears to have been pasted down on top of Rankin's signature]. .

n.p. [Philadelphia?]: L. L. Chapman, 1857. Very Good. 4-page leaflet.19cm. Disbound (removed from a bound volume). Stitch marks, etc. along left side. No separate wrapper present. Chapman appears to have believed that sickness, eathquakes, storms, etc. were caused by excess electricity resulting from currents of light that struck the earth at particular angles from other bodies in our solar system. Chapman also wrote a book titled "Principia, or Nature's Full Principles " in which this odd theory may have been explained in greater detail.
