Description
Waltham St. Lawrence: Golden Cockerel Press, 1926. No. 48 OF CLXXV COPIES. 258 x 195 mm. (10 1/4 x 7 3/4"). 15, [3] pp. Understated black crushed morocco by J. Franklin Mowery (stamp-signed "JFM 94" on rear turn-in), wraparound design of blind-stamped L-shaped panels of intersecting lines, smooth spine with vertical gilt lettering, leather hinges, edges untrimmed. Original illustrated upper cover of dust jacket (repaired at one corner) bound in at rear. In a matching morocco-lipped slipcase. Title page with large woodcut of the risen Christ, four large vignettes in the text, four pictorial half borders, and four full-page woodcuts, all by David Jones, printer's device in colophon. Front pastedown with bookplate of Jan van der Marck. Chanticleer 40. A pristine copy. This is a wonderfully--if understatedly--bound copy of one of the most strictly limited Golden Cockerel Press productions. The binding is the work of J. Franklin Mowery, retired Head of Conservation at the Folger Shakespeare Library and past president of the Guild of Book Workers. Mowery studied bookbinding under Professor Kurt Londenberg at the Staatliche Hochschule für bildende Künste (Academy of Art) in Hamburg, and trained as a paper conservator under Otto Wächter in Vienna, before returning to the U.S. to work at the Huntington Library. According to his article "A Binder's Training" (Guild of Book Workers' Journal XX, 1981-82), the blind-stamping technique seen here was "particularly favored by Professor Londenberg" and often employed by Mowery for the range of design possibilities it offers. The method uses dies to stamp the patterns: "a photographic process can transfer any black and white image onto zinc plates that are deeply etched and mounted onto type-high metal blocks for heated impressions or onto wood for cold embossing." Mowery stated that lines of the design here represent the driving rain of the storm that struck Jonah's ship. Founded in 1920 with the intention to print fine editions of important well-known books as well as new literary works of merit from young authors, the Golden Cockerel Press was purchased in 1924 by the illustrator and wood-engraver Robert Gibbings. "Under his direction," says Cave, the Press was "transformed into the principal vehicle for the renaissance of wood-engraved book illustration that took place in the years between the wars." In addition to doing wood engravings himself, Gibbings employed a stable of eminent artists including, among others, Eric Gill, Blair Hughes-Stanton, John Nash, John Farleigh, Eric Ravilious, and David Jones. The memorable woodcuts are the work of Jones (1895-1974), who had a brief but impressive career as an illustrator before eye strain forced him to abandon engraving in 1930. In his published study of Jones' work, Douglas Cleverdon says that in the short time Jones was engraving "he produced a remarkable amount of work, of great variety; some witty, some mystical; some boldly cut, some delicately shaded; some simple to print, some virtually impossible. Although he never attained . . . the greatest technical mastery in the conventional sense, his prints are nearly always distinguished by their excellence of design, personal commitment, and absolute individuality." Our binding was commissioned by collector and self-described "radical" museum administrator Jan van der Marck (1929-2010), who championed artists that pushed boundaries--often to the consternation of the museum boards who employed him..

Description
Paris: Librairie des Amateurs, A. Ferroud - F. Ferroud, Successor, 1910. Limited Edition. Near Fine. Deluxe limited edition of Baudelaire's most famous work, #8 of 80 copies printed on Japon paper. 292, [6] pp., publisher's prospectus bound in at rear. Illustrated with 27 illustrations drawn by Georges Rochgrosse and etched by Eugene Decisy, including handcolored vignette to title page, 20 full-page illustrations in three states, and 6 head-pieces in three states (three prints taken from the same block, the first in an early stage of its development). Bound in publisher's self-wraps with textured cream overwraps, title page reproduced on front panel. Near Fine with light soiling to wraps, creasing and several short repaired tears to spine, and very faint dampstaining to lower edge, impinging slightly on margins. Several pages unopened. A decadent edition of Baudelaire's decadent work, published in the late flowering of the Book Beautiful movement. Rochgrosse's exquisite etchings fully capture the eroticism of sin, and his horned and goat-footed Lucifer vies with Le genie du mal for beauty. Copies in the original temporary wraps are rare.

Description
New York: Interurban Woman Suffrage Council, 1907. First edition. Good. 104 x 140 mm. [8] pp. Good only, with predation to top margin, not touching text. Dampstaining, toning, and old creases. Still a remarkable survival. This is a rare item: OCLC records only one copy (Bryn Mawr), it has not appeared at auction, and this is the only copy on the market. This exceedingly scarce pamphlet argues against the common anti-suffrage argument that "politics is a business, which is man's sphere, and that it nowhere touches the home, which is woman's sphere" (p. 5). Catt argues, instead, that politics, particularly taxation, directly affected the life and labor of women both inside and outside of the home: for one, "domestic" purchases like fabric and thread were taxed as much as anything else; and she cites the case of Massachusetts corset-stitchers who "received 75 cents per day and were obliged to furnish their own thread," effectively paying a tax to be employed in the largely female garment industry. Politics and the home, then, were inextricable, and the argument that women should be separated from politics because of their domestic duties was moot. Founded in Brooklyn in 1903 by Priscilla D. Hackstaff, the Interurban Woman Suffrage Council came under the leadership of Carrie Chapman Catt (1859 - 1947) in 1907. At the time, Catt was at the height of her powers as an organizer, having already spent three years as the President of the National American Woman Suffrage Association - as the successor to Susan B. Anthony - and having founded the International Woman Suffrage Alliance. Catt headquartered the Council at the women-only Martha Washington Hotel in Manhattan, where she kept a room to hold meetings and distribute suffrage literature free of charge. The Council became a crucial to gathering support from elected officials: it "was the first suffrage organization in New York City to interview Assemblymen and Senators on woman suffrage and it called the first representative convention held in the big metropolis" (Harper, pp. 459-460). The Council was a precursor to Chapman's Woman Suffrage Party, a union of New York-based women's suffrage groups that boasted over two thousand members by 1915 and became a leading force in the final decade of the fight for the Nineteenth Amendment. Harper, ed., The History of Woman Suffrage, vol. VI (1922). Good.

Description
2 volumes: 427 pages with facsimile title and index; 513 pages with two facsimile pages, appendix and index. Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 7") bound in three quarter blue leather with raised spine bands and gilt lettering to spine. From the library of George M Foster. Second edition. The two chronicles by Francisco de Burgoa easily hold first place for inflated style and bombastic phraseology, especially the opening remarks to various chapters. Yet for the important area of Oaxaca, and the numerous subjects he treats, Burgoa's works are indispensable and irreplaceable sources. Burgoa, born in Oaxaca, was related to numerous local colonial families. He took his final vows in 1625, and by 1649 was provincial of his Order. In that post he made a special effort to visit various parts of Oaxaca, especially seeking notices of Zapotecan antiquities, with the aim of writing a history of Oaxaca. Before his death in 1681he did not complete it but left two prolix yet valuable published treatises. The two chronicles are the usually abbreviated Palestra historial and Geográfica descripción. Burgoa conceived of them as a single work, but they differ in contents. The Palestra historial is a typical chronicle. It begins with the arrival in 1526 of Dominicans in Mexico City, and shortly thereafter their appearance in Oaxaca. Burgoa rehearses the lives of many missionaries already biographized by Davila Padilla, but Burgoa emphasizes their apostolate in the Oaxaca areas, even before formal establishment of the Province of San Hipolito (1592). These lives are uniformly eulogistic, but scattered through them are important bits of information on the numerous Indian groups of Oaxaca. The Geográfica descripción has 80 chapters. They detail the histories of the Monasteries and the work of their friars among the Indians, with much less attention to biographical detail than in the Palestra historial. The data run to about mid-17th century in both. (Handbook of Middle American Indians) George McClelland Foster, Jr born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on October 9, 1913, died on May 18, 2006, at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California, Berkeley, where he served as a professor from 1953 to his retirement in 1979, when he became professor emeritus. His contributions to anthropological theory and practice still challenge us; in more than 300 publications, his writings encompass a wide diversity of topics, including acculturation, long-term fieldwork, peasant economies, pottery making, public health, social structure, symbolic systems, technological change, theories of illness and wellness, humoral medicine in Latin America, and worldview. The quantity, quality, and long-term value of his scholarly work led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976. Virtually all of his major publications have been reprinted and/or translated. Provenance from the executor of Foster's library laid in.Condition:Some occasional pencil marginalia by Foster. Foster's date of acquired on front paste down of volume one. Some rubbing to extremities else a very good set.

Description
[Bisbee, Arizona]: [F. A. McKinney], 1927. Very good. 9"x 8". Stapled self-wrappers. Pp. [16]. Very good: old vertical center fold to all leaves; some light dust soiling. This is a heavily illustrated land and tourism promotional for Bisbee in and around Bisbee, Arizona and its surrounding area. The book has 31 photographic images with highlights including a panoramic shot of Bisbee that stretches across the top half of the two center pages and a nearly half page panorama of the town of Warren. A few images show street scenes in Bisbee, while several depict camp, resort, and ranch sites in surrounding areas. The rear cover is dedicated to images of Sonora, Mexico, just seven miles across the border "over a good road, and no formalities to cross the line." One of the images depicts ten Mexican children (and swears they lined up in height order, "as shown, on their own accord") and another shows the Mexican Rural Guard. The text in the book describes places of interest such as "The Pit," an 18 acre hole where once stood Sacramento Hill, a mountain of copper. There is a center spread on Bisbee, relating information about transportation, roads and railways; schools, churches, banks and other services; as well as population and climate statistics. It specifies the temperature records for January 1927, which is how we attributed the date of publication. OCLC shows four holdings over two entries.

Vienna:: Johann Thomas Edlen v. Trattnern, 1786., 1786. 8vo. (208 x 126 mm) vi, [10], 270 pp. Six engraved folding plates; toning and foxing throughout, lightly soiled plates, ownership pen marks on front flyleaf. Half calf over two-tone green floral motif boards, raised bands, gilt-stamping on spine, gilt-stamped red leather spine label, edges tinted red; worn boards, insect damage to spine ends, light marginal worming throughout. Cyrillic bookplate, Cyrillic library stamps and manuscript index number on title-page, Cyrillic library stamp on Plate I (Ar. Shevchenko"), early ownership signature. SCARCE. Second German edition. George Adams served as instrument maker to George III of England and as optician to the Prince of Wales. First published at London in 1784, the Essay on Electricity was reprinted the following year in an enlarged edition containing an essay on magnetism. The first German language edition was published at Leipzig in the same year. Adams seeks to present a general theory of electricity and, in line with George Ill's interest in the practical applications of science, assess its possible medical uses. The six engraved plates are of particular interest, containing 105 figures, mostly illustrating various experimental instruments constructed by Adams, often at the request of the English king, and including a frock-coated patient (plate V, fig. 87) apparently undergoing electrical therapy. The plate depicting magnetic lines of force will remind many of experiments they themselves conducted in elementary school. Wheeler Gift 519.
