Description
1843. First Edition. SHAW, Henry. Dresses and Decorations of the Middle Ages from the Seventh to the Seventeenth Centuries. London: William Pickering (Charles Whittingham, Chiswick Press), 1843. Two volumes. Quarto, contemporary full red pebbled morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spines and covers, raised bands, black and tan morocco spine labels, all edges gilt. $4500.First edition of this beautifully illustrated study of costumes and decorations by Shaw, one of the greatest illuminators of the 19th century, with 94 plates of finely tailored and crafted French and English Medieval dress and accoutrements, most exquisitely hand-colored, as well as numerous in-text wood engravings and initials printed in colors from wood blocks. A lovely copy in contemporary full morocco-gilt by J. Wright.""Shaw's career was devoted to rescuing the English past through a long series of imposing books on architecture and art, published chiefly by William Pickering at the Chiswick Press. He used a variety of processes to reproduce his drawings: copper engravings, lithographs, chromolithographs, wood engravings, and woodblocks printed in color. Dresses and Decorations of the Middle Ages… is one of the finest of his works"" (Ray 102). Appearing in monthly parts from 1840, this was Shaw's ""most ambitious work… [with] plates highly finished and heightened in gold… It is a magnificent production. There are 94 plates, showing paintings, miniatures, stained glass, furnishings, glasses, chests, vestments, gold cups, [and] jewelry… mostly on copper, hand-colored in the most sumptuous way; in addition the text… is adorned with [98] elaborate initials and decorations printed in colors from wood blocks, the only Shaw-Whittingham book in which this occurs. It has a considerable claim to be called the most handsome book produced in the whole of the 19th century"" (McLean, 66). With an additional 128 uncolored in-text woodcuts serving as tailpieces. Issued the same year as a large-paper copy, no priority determined. Colas 2720. Hiler, 796. Bookplates.Double-page plate of Francis I in Volume II split along fold, repaired on verso; faint abrasion to front cover of Volume I. A clean, very handsomely bound copy in near-fine condition.

He applied himself closely to literature, and especially to historical studies. His name is chiefly preserved by his great work Origine des Lois, des Arts, et des Sciences, chez les Anciens Peuples (in which he was assisted by his friend Fugère). It treats the history of civilization among the Assyrians, Babylonians, Egyptians, Phoenicians, and the early Greeks, in Volume I; and in Volume II, the period from the death of Jacob to the establishment of monarchy among the Hebrews… with the states of Greece, and the people of Crete. The third volume carries the subject down to the time of Cyrus, and upon the same plan as the other two. Goguet adds also dissertations on ancient coins; on the astronomical periods of the Chaldaeans; on the antiquities of the Babylonians, Egyptians, and Chinese"" (McClintock & Strong Biblical Cyclopedia). Description
ALBERG, CARL. (1900-1986). Swedish-born, American boat designer and pioneer of fiberglass yacht design. Detailed deck plan and side elevation for a 21' motor boat, drawn in pencil and signed ("Carl A. Alberg"). 1p. Small folio (approximately 11¼" by 10"). Marblehead, October 25, 1975. The LOA (length overall) is 21' 0", beam is 7' 6", draft is 1' 10 ½"; displacement is 3000 pounds, and the drawings' scale is ½" = 1'. Alberg has identified this sheet of drawings as project #44. The boat calls for a 20 HP diesel engine. After settling in the U.S. at 25, Alberg worked his way up from rigger to designer, opening his own office in 1946. In 1959, he designed the immensely successful Triton for Pearson Yachts, the first fiberglass auxiliary and still a popular yacht design. "Carl Alberg succeeded in bringing forth many of the first production fiberglass cruising sailboats from the design board to the dockside… His work from the late 1950s through his on-going work at the time of his death in 1986 was for a whole new market, the middle income sailor who may have been new to sailing or upgrading from smaller boats, many daysailors or racers," ("Carl Arne Alberg - Pioneer in Classic Plastic," Good Old Boat Magazine, Wallace). Alberg's many successful designs include the Cape Dory 22, the Typhoon Daysailor, the Corinthian Conquest, and the Pearson Ensign and Ariel. In very fine condition. Alberg's original boat designs are rare as most are held institutionally.

Measures 9.5" by 7.75". The letter reads in full: "Dear Sir, I have a negro man for hire and find some difficulty in finding a suitable situation here, therefore would be glad that I could find a place in your country and would take in as a particular favor if you will make some inquiring in your neighborhood and let me know what the prospects are, and particularly the price- I have $200 for you which is all I can raise at present and unless their is some change in the times I shall be utterly unable to collect my debts of $1600 now due. I can't collect as much as will pay my little debts. I believe I could purchase some young cattle with notes if they would [...] I might pay you something in that negro [sic]. We are all well also Jan [sic] Millers family - [...] -- your friend, H.M. Moffett." Description
London: The Royal Princess' Theatre, 1852. Vintage broadside for a series of performances at the Royal Princess's Theatre, Saturday, December 11, 1852, including Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night, or What You Will," Samuel Birch's 1825 musical drama "The Adopted Child," and John Poole's 1833 play "Deaf as a Post: A Farce, in One Act," two of which are noted as the first of four farewell performances by British stage comedian and actor George Bartley. With a manuscript ink annotation of a gift inscription on the bottom right. Named for Princess Victoria before her accession as queen, the Royal Princess's Theatre opened in 1836 on Oxford Street in London on the previous location of the "Queen's Bazaar," a gallery which opened in 1828 and housed paintings and a moving diorama by the celebrated British painter Clarkson Frederick Stanfield and David Roberts. The theatre was most celebrated for its renowned productions of Shakespearean revivals under the management of the noted actor Charles John Kean (1849-1860), boldly noted on the broadside just beneath the title block. The first announcement on the broadside is the final four nights of performances by Bartley, performing in two of the evening's plays, as well as two the following Monday, one Wednesday, and ending with "Mr. Bartley's Farewell Benefit under the Patronage of Her Majesty and H.R.H. Prince Albert, on Saturday, 18th Dec., that Day being the 50th Anniversary of his First Appearance in London." The broadside also announces upcoming performances of John Westland Marston's 1852 melodrama "Anne Blake," (The Royal Princess Theatre's house dramatist) Dion Boucicault's 1852 melodrama "The Corsican Brothers; or, the Fatal Duel," based on the 1844 novella by Alexandre Dumas, as well as Shakespeare's comedy "Much Ado About Nothing," Thomas Haynes Bayly's 1847 play "The Spitalfields Weaver," Shakespeare's "The Merry Wives of Windsor," and James Kenney's 1823 play "Sweehearts and Wives." Broadsides, 19.5 x 20 inches, mounted onto a 20.75 x 22 inch board. Very Good, with edgewear, toning, and creasing commensurate with age, with the top left portion reattached. Board with edgewear and pinholes to the corners.

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2018. Reprint. Hard Cover. Fine/Fine. 5x1x8. Lee, Alan. 2024 11th printing. Spine ends very lightly bruised, otherwise an excellent copy. Binding tight and square, pages clean, bright, and unmarked. 2018 Hard Cover. 302 pp. Color plates by Alan Lee. "In the Tale of The Fall of Gondolin are two of the greatest powers in the world. There is Morgoth of the uttermost evil, unseen in this story but ruling over a vast military power from his fortress of Angband. Deeply opposed to Morgoth is Ulmo, second in might only to Manwe, chief of the Valar: he is called the Lord of Waters, of all seas, lakes, and rivers under the sky. But he works in secret in Middle-earth to support the Noldor, the kindred of the Elves among whom were numbered Hurin and Turin Turambar. Central to this enmity of the gods is the city of Gondolin, beautiful but undiscoverable. It was built and peopled by Noldorin Elves who, when they dwelt in Valinor, the land of the gods, rebelled against their rule and fled to Middle-earth. Turgon King of Gondolin is hated and feared above all his enemies by Morgoth, who seeks in vain to discover the marvellously hidden city, while the gods in Valinor in heated debate largely refuse to intervene in support of Ulmo's desires and designs. Into this world comes Tuor, cousin of Turin, the instrument of Ulmo's designs. Guided unseen by him Tuor sets out from the land of his birth on the fearful journey to Gondolin, and in one of the most arresting moments in the history of Middle-earth the sea-god himself appears to him, rising out of the ocean in the midst of a storm. In Gondolin he becomes great; he is wedded to Idril, Turgon's daughter, and their son is Earendel, whose birth and profound importance in days to come is foreseen by Ulmo. At last comes the terrible ending. Morgoth learns through an act of supreme treachery all that he needs to mount a devastating attack on the city, with Balrogs and dragons and numberless Orcs. After a minutely observed account of the fall of Gondolin, the tale ends with the escape of Turin and Idril, with the child Earendel, looking back from a cleft in the mountains as they flee southward, at the blazing wreckage of their city. They were journeying into a new story, the Tale of Earendel, which Tolkien never wrote, but which is sketched out in this book from other sources. Following his presentation of Beren and Luthien Christopher Tolkien has used the same 'history in sequence' mode in the writing of this edition of The Fall of Gondolin. In the words of J.R.R. Tolkien, it was 'the first real story of this imaginary world' and, together with Beren and Luthien and The Children of Hurin, he regarded it as one of the three 'Great Tales' of the Elder Days.
