Description
First stereotype edition; 10 3/4 x 7 1/2; pp. [9], II-XXXII, 1-804, [1], II-VIII; lavishly-embossed, red cloth over boards; gilt titles to front board and spine; illustrated with drawings and plates by Ivan Vasilievich Simakov, including frontis; marbled edges; wide, silk book marker; small, rubbed spots to corners and tips of spine and mild wear to cloth; hinges a bit weak; small gift inscription and bookplate of renowned physician and author George Lysloff; endpapers with, bizarrely enough, period watercolor paintings of books and a rose pasted-on; in good to very good condition. A beautiful and scarce edition of Pushkin's poetry and prose, it was illustrated by noted Russian painter Ivan Vasilievich Simakov (1877 - 1925). Most-often remembered for his propaganda art and political posters, he was also an architect, graphic designer, and book artist - particularly well-known for his illustrations of works of Pushkin, distinguished by their precise adherence to the literary text.

Description
San Francisco: Alex Wofsy Fine Arts, 1991. Later edition. Reprint authorized by the trustees of J.R. Abbey and Dawsons. Four folio volumes measuring 310 x 232 mm. Faux leather with gilt to spines, all in Fine jackets. Collating xx, 399; xxi, 428; xiii, 299; xiv, 301-675: complete, including 633 illustrations. A pleasing set in all. Drawing from his own collection, Major J. R. Abbey producied the following representation of landscape and architecture of the 18th and 19th centuries. "I have, for over a quarter of a century, been collecting books on the Scenery of Great Britain and Ireland, illustrated with aquatints or lithographs published between the years 1775 and 1860. In this Bibliographical Catalogue, the word 'Scenery' is not strictly confined to landscape but includes architecture, and urban and social scenes. I have found it a fascinating subject and a field in which there seem to have been few serious collectors. Many of the illustrations are of real beauty, and the fact that a large number are from books of the greatest rarity and therefore known to few in their original form gives added significance to those which are reproduced in this catalogue. It is perhaps true to say that the thirty-five plates are a microcosm of the English scene as well as showing something of the social life of the period.

A very rare autograph document signed "Jno Nicholson": "Capt Joseph Blewer Esqr acknowledges to have recd the sum of four thousand five hundred and eighty five pounds and Six pence of Samuel Massey Esqr. at the time and for the purpose Mentd. within which he had borrowed of Sd. Massey as, he declares upon Interest, he also produces a copy of his accts. Current wherein he charges himself and accts. for the expenditure of the sum aforesaid... 1000 were pd by his draft on the navy board in fav of I Hood." On the back are numbers totaling 4585.6 all in the handwriting of Joseph Blewer. At the bottom, Blewer penned "Receiv'd Octr 18 1777 from Samuel Massey Four Thousand five hundred & eighty five pounds & Six Pence for the use of the State of Pennsylvania. Joseph Blewer". Joseph Blewer of Philadelphia served in the Pennsylvania General Assembly from 1779 to 1780. Samuel Massey (1734-1793), a descendant of a prominent Quaker family in the Philadelphia region, was a captain in the Revolution and commanded a company of troops. Before the war, he owned a successful import company. As this document shows, Massey indirectly lent Pennsylvania money for the war efforts. Though Nicholson is a common autograph appearing on many pieces of Revolutionary War paper, the American Book Prices Current shows only two holograph pieces. The document is in fragile condition with fold separations and ragged edges

Description
New York: Museum of Modern Art. Good. 1963. First Edition. Softcover. [some light staining. light soiling and age-toning to the front cover, faint dampstain at upper corner of rear cover slightly affecting the last few pages]. (B&W photographs) Published in conjunction with the first major American retrospective of Hitchcock's films, this rather scarce 48-page monograph was the earliest critical work on the Master of Suspense to be published in the U.S. It's hard to imagine today that the director was not always regarded as a serious film artist -- yet in 1963, just prior to the release of THE BIRDS (and thus with PSYCHO, which despite its enduring reputation was distasteful to many contemporary critics, freshest in the public mind -- not to mention his weekly TV appearances), Hitchcock was still largely dismissed as just an "entertainer." This book and the MoMA retrospective (both of which had the full cooperation of Hitchcock and his publicists) marked the beginning of the elevation of his critical stature, especially in the U.S. The monograph examines Hitchcock' s career in more or less chronological fashion, with filmographic information and brief commentary by Bogdanovich interspersed with excerpts from his interview with the director. (In fact, it more or less reads like a prototype for the famous Hitchcock/Truffaut interview book -- the tape-recorded sessions that formed the basis for that work having commenced several months prior to the MoMA retrospective, essentially as part of the same self-promotional agenda.) At any rate, the Truffaut book was delayed by several years, and this modest little monograph thus stands as the first significant "modern-era" Hitchcock publication, and therefore arguably one of the most important works of film criticism ever published. This was the last of the three director-devoted monographs authored for MoMA by Bogdanovich (preceded by those on Orson Welles and Howard Hawks), whose own directorial career was then just over the horizon. .
