Description
[Great Britain], 1850. Comprised of 88 manuscript pages of mathematical definitions, tables, methods, and exercises in a single hand, with the ownership signature of "Caroline Waters Age 16 yrs" to the front endpaper. Marbled paper vernacular binding, measuring 8 x 12 inches and stitched at spine. Caroline's metric measurements and English currency reveal her to be a student somewhere in the UK. Though the commonness of her name and the absence of a specific date prevents us from locating her in genealogy records, the manuscript she left behind reveals much about how and why girls of her age and class were being taught arithmetic. Caroline's elegant, practiced hand suggests that she is a member of the rising middle class, and the opening of the book suggests that she is a beginning to intermediate mathematician. At the top of the first page, she defines Arithmetic as "the art of computing by numbers" which "has five principal [sic] rules for this purpose, viz. Numeration, Subtraction, Addition, Multiplication, and Division." Using this definition, she divides her notebook into a section for each, providing a definition for that principle, plus clear-cut examples of its use in both Simple and Compound formats. Numeration, Subtraction, and Addition are grouped together at the front; and after these sections conclude, Caroline enters in Practical Questions in Compound Addition and Subtraction. These involve word problems involving the exchange of money and the calculation of wet and dry weights, cloth measurements, and time. She then mirrors this with Multiplication and Division, before adding sections on Decimal Fractions, more Practical Questions, and sections on Federal Money and Simple Interest. The organization of the manuscript suggests that Caroline copied it out for continued reference, where sections are easy to locate and problems clearly illustrate each of the principles. And the emphasis in sample problems on currency conversion, monetary exchange, and banking implies that her family in some way wanted her to be aware of these concepts. An exceptional and rich document, Caroline's notebook is a rich resource for study including but not limited to the history of women's education, middle class education, women's domestic use of mathematics, women in business, paleography, genealogy, gender studies.

Description
Boston: Printed by Rogers and Fowle for Samuel Eliot in Cornhill, 1743. 8vo.  195 x 120 mm., [7 ¾ x 4 ¾ inches].  xxx, 18, 424 pp.  Bound in contemporary mottled calf, raised bands, red leather label.  The binding shows minor rubbing at joints, some discoloration due to age, but a very good copy in contemporary American binding.  Stamped "Ex Libris Wilson H. Kimnach" on front pastedown and the 19th century signature of John Clarke dated 1848. First edition.  Charles Chauncy (1705-1787) was one of the leading American theologians who served his congregation in Boston for nearly 60 years.  He broke with the strict tenants of Calvinism rejecting the doctrine of justification by faith alone and the total depravity of mankind.  He adopted a more liberal view having been influenced by the Enlightenment and became one of the leaders Liberal Protestantism and Unitarianism.  He was a stanch supporter of the American caused during the revolution and wrote a number of sermons advocation separation.  Norman and Lee Gibbs, historians of American religion, called him the "theologian of the American Revolution." Seasonable Thoughts on the State of Religion is a manifesto against enthusiasm in religion and with its publication, Chauncy become a leader of the Old Lights arguing against the First Great Awakening and the establishment of the New Lights lead by Whitfield and his followers.  His book is snapshot of American religion during the middle years of the 18th century and it provides in great detail the evolution of the awakening of the evangelical spirit taking place in America and the theological debate that he constructed in order to combat its spread.  A fundamental book in the history of American religion.  A second edition, also printed by Rogers and Fowle appeared in 1748. Evans, Charles.  American Bibliography, 5151.  Sabin, Dictionary of Books Relating to America, 12327.  Appleton's Cyclopaedia of American Biography, I p. 594.   .

Description
A charming whimsical pen and ink drawing of a fantasy figure in a tree playing a flute like instrument to a large attentive bird. Wiener Werkstatte artist Mela Koehler rendered this sketch on fine mesh paper attached to a board with measurements for reduction written in pencil along edges. She signed in the lower left corner with her squared signature, "Mela Koehler." An intriguing and appealing image, beautifully framed in black wood with cream detail so that the drawing appears set into the frame with archival black mat and conservation glass. Frame measures 14 x 16 inches, image measures 8 x 9 1/4 inches. The drawing is framed close to its black border drawn in ink. The drawing itself is slightly uneven so that the black ink border is framed over at one point. A fine ensemble.

Description
Brooklyn, New York: The Pearl Press, 375 Pearl Street, 1908. Octavo (23.5 x 15.5 cm.), 87 pages. Advertisements throughout. FIRST EDITION. An attractive community cookbook, from the aptly named Westchester County hamlet of Pleasantville. It's unclear the connection between Pleasantville's St John's Guild and Peg Woffington. Margaret "Peg" Woffington was a popular 18th century English actress, linked romantically to David Garrick. A tea house in Teddington, UK, with a two hundred fifty year history, was established by Woffington, but otherwise the connection seems tenuous. A few small stains on the front board of black and red printed cloth binding, otherwise near fine. Scarce. [OCLC shows four copies].
