Description
1950. Original watercolor (17 x 22 cm.), labeled, signed, and dated by the artist in pencil. On watercolor paper which had been mounted on a thicker card stock, now de-laminated, but in remarkably fine condition. Henry A.C. Jackson (1877-1960) was one of Canada's outstanding amateur naturalists. He was the elder brother of landscape painter A.Y. Jackson, and while A.Y. achieved great fame through his art, Henry chose to quietly document his mycological journeys in Quebec through copious note taking and watercolor paintings of the collected specimens. After his death in 1960, much of his work was donated to the National Gallery of Canada. In 1979 The National Gallery mounted an exhibition of the watercolors, and produced the catalogue, Mr. Jackson's Mushrooms which reproduces forty-odd images, and accompanies them with excerpts from his field notes. Very few of Jackson's mushroom watercolors have reached the market, with only a few having been given to friends and neighbors over the years. A small convolute of related materials accompanies the watercolor, including: The Fungus Records of Mr. H.A.C. Jackson from L'Islet Co., Quebec 1941-1960 (offprint from The Canadian Field Naturalist, vol. 7, no. 4 (1963); Notes on the Higher Fungi Collected in Lasalle, Que., 1930-1940 offprint from C.F.N., vol. 62, no. 5. (1948); 18 pages of original manuscript and typescript of Jackson's Field notes from 1932 and 33; three original photographs, 6 x 9 cm. each. Two of the photos depict the artist, at a youthful age, in the field. The third depicts an unidentified fungus on a log.

The TWELVE AND THE SCYTHIANS. Dvenadtsat. Paris, Mishan Publishing Co. Editions d'art "La Cible., 1920. Khudojestvienoe izdatelstvo "Michen". [Art Editions "The Target"]. 13, rue Bonaparte. Paris. 1920. 8vo (24 x19,5 cm), (27) ff. : flexible printed card covers. This book contains the two most famous poems of Alexander Blok, One of Russia's most famous poets. Two plates by Gontcharova, six plates and a small illustration by Larionov, refined typography. Natalia Gontcharova (1881-1962) was one of the most famous artists of the Russian Avant-garde. Trained in Moscow where she met Larionov (1881-1964), he was to become her life companion. She contributed to a great number of important exhibitions and both Gontcharova and Larionov played a crucial role in the development of Russian art. They settled in Paris shortly before the present edition, became French citizens in 1938 and were married in 1955. Larionov exhibited his Rayonnist works at The Target exhibition in 1913 in Moscow. . The illustrations by Larionov showed his freedom in changing from one style to another within the same book as he liked to do in 1912-1913. Name chosen by the bookseller Jacques Povolozky for his publishing house. The most striking work of the symbolist poet Alexandre Block (1880-1921), the twelve red guards representing the new world. Printed by "Union", The most outstanding work of the poet ALEXANDRE BLOCK (1880-1921), were The TWELVE Red Guards and THE SCYTHIANS Both are poems announcing the revolution. The revolution led to the loss of Block's brother, a soldier in the red army. The illustrations by Larionov exibit his ability to change from one style to another within the same book as he liked to do in 1912-1913. The style of Goncharova is more conventional and more assured than her previous illustrations. Originally published by the éditions of d'art La Civile 1923 at the Union Printing House. Moscow. In good condition. Goncharova, Larionov. Centre Pompidou. Paris. 1995. $ 1,950 The most outstanding work of the poet ALEXANDRE BLOK (1880-1921), Another poem, The 12 Red Guards are comparative with the Les Scythes also a poem announcing the revolution. Blok lost his brother, a soldier, in the Red Army during these early years. "Blok expressed his opinions about the revolution by the enigmatic poem "The Twelve" (1918). The long poem exhibits "mood-creating sounds, polyphonic rhythms, and harsh, slangy language" (as the Encyclopædia Britannica termed it). It describes the march of twelve Bolshevik soldiers (likened to the Twelve Apostles of Christ) through the streets of revolutionary Petrograd, with a fierce winter blizzard raging around them. "The Twelve" alienated Blok from many of his intellectual readers (who accused him of lack of artistry), while the Bolsheviks scorned his former mysticism and aesceticism. Blok considered this poem to be his best work" AS QUOTED ON WIKIPEDIA

S. l.: By the artist, 1930. Softcover. Eighteen items; various sizes - 11" x 7 1/4" to 14" x 12"; drawings in pencil, ink, and water colors, on Strathmore Drawing boards, poster boards, and artist’ boards.; many of them signed and captioned, i. e. “Ballet Costume,” “Business Woman’s Suit,” etc.; most in near fine condition with minor wear, a few with light spotting and glue residue predominantly to verso; several of them feature fabric designs, rather than dress models; overall in very good to near fine condition. Housed in a colorful tapestry portfolio with four of boards not fitting properly within its margins, as they are a bit larger. A beautiful collection of dress and costume designs, it was, presumably, created by a fashion/graphic design student. While most of the drawings were decidedly Art Deco-inspired, several of the dresses were a bit more whimsical and softer in appearance. Although research has not revealed much about the artist, she was, undoubtedly, quite talented and accomplished.
