Description
Geneva: The Russian Social Democratic Labour Party, 1905. First edition. marbled boards. Very Good. Vpered introduced Bolshevik strategy and led to Lenin's dominance during the Russian Revolution. A complete run with noted provenance. In the early twentieth century, the fate of Marxism hung in the balance as various revolutionary factions used journals and party congresses to exert control. We have on offer the full run of Vpered, a newspaper published from January to May 1905 in Geneva and smuggled into Russia. Vladimir Lenin contributed more than 40 articles to Vpered (Forward) and several issues were entirely written by him. Lenin was joined on Vpered's editorial board by Alexander Bogdanov, Anatoly Lunacharsky, and Mikhail Olminsky. Financial support was provided by the founder of socialist realism, Maxim Gorky, who also contributed articles to several issues. Iskra (Spark), the predecessor to Vpered and the first underground newspaper of the Russian Social Democratic Labor Party (RSDLP), was founded in 1900 by Lenin, at the time a ruthless organizer and political tactician who moved to Western Europe in 1900 after three years in Siberian exile. Lenin left Iskra in late 1903 after it was taken over by the Mensheviks, a minority Marxist faction of the RSDLP that supported more progressive political change through legal means. Lenin disparagingly referred to the loosely assembled Mensheviks as "disorganizers" of the party. Lenin's followers would come to be known as Bolsheviks, which means majority. After a brief respite in the mountains with his wife in 1904, Lenin settled in Switzerland to begin his next publishing venture, Vpered, following "the direction of the old Iskra" and directly competing with the new Iskra. Published during a critical period in Russian history - the Russian Revolution of 1905, the first major challenge to the autocratic rule of Russian Czar Nicholas II and a precursor to the more famous Russian Revolution of 1917 - Vpered was an influential underground publication that was crucial to the formation of the distinct political identity of the Bolshevik faction of the RSDLP. Vpered was central to the success of Lenin's revolution, enabling him to bring disparate groups together and outflank his competitors (namely, the Mensheviks). Lenin's writing in Vpered reflects his willingness to adapt to changing circumstances. Though he continued to advocate for a centralized and disciplined revolutionary party (the Bolsheviks), he also emphasized the use of violent insurrection by local revolutionaries and mass actions by workers and peasants, a central tenet of the evolving Bolshevik ideology. This shift in strategy was a response to the political and social unrest of the 1905 revolution. Lenin wrote, "the proletariat must fight in the front rank for a republic and must contemptuously reject the advice that is given to it to take care not to scare the bourgeoisie." Unlike the Mensheviks who wanted the bourgeois to lead, Lenin advocated for an alliance that would establish a "revolutionary democratic dictatorship of the proletariat and the peasantry."(Faulkner) Ultimately, Lenin and the Bolsheviks dominated the revolutionary movement against the czar while the Mensheviks struggled to stay relevant. The final issue of Vpered was printed just before Lenin's departure from Geneva for the Third Congress of the RSDLP in London on April 25, 1905. Following this conference, Lenin began work on a new publication, Proletarii (Proletarians), which we also have on offer. Vpered represents a pivotal moment in his political evolution and explains the pragmatism of Bolshevik strategy that helped them successfully overthrow Czar Nicholas II. Provenance: With stamp on first page (issue 1) of the Bund Archive ("Archiv Bunda"). The Bund Archive is the collection of a social democratic organization founded by two Russian Jewish revolutionaries, John Mill and Tsemakh Kopelson, who fled their native land to avoid political persecution. Mill and Kopelson established the Bund Archive in 1899 in Geneva, Switzerland, then a safe haven for European socialist émigrés, and served as the library of the Jewish Labor Bund of Russia, Poland, and Lithuania (founded in 1897). The items in the Bund collection are exceptional because of their age, their comprehensiveness, and their founders' resolve to preserve the past. The Bund Archive was moved to Germany in 1919 but came under threat with the rise of Hitler and was smuggled into France in French Diplomatic pouches, nominally sold to the French government. Though the Nazis looted the archive in 1944, much of it survived the war. Much of the Bund Archive has been at YIVO (Institute for Jewish Research) since 1992. [Note: We confirmed with the Bund Archive that this has indeed been deaccessioned.] Geneva: [The Russian Social Democratic Labour Party], 1905. Tall folio (440x292mm), early half-linen over marbled boards. Complete in 18 issues. (Issues 1-8, four pages each; 9-18, six pages each). Issue 13 with a few water spots, issue 14 with small corner tear affecting a few words of text. RARE. References: Neil Faulkner. A People's History of the Russian Revolution. Description
London: Macmillan and Co, 1875. Third Edition. 226 x 151 mm. (9 x 6"). xx, 370 pp. VERY PRETTY SCARLET CRUSHED MOROCCO, GILT, BY LUCIEN BROCA (stamp-signed on front turn-in), covers with decorative roll border and frame of gilt and blind rules, central panel diapered in ogival compartments, each containing a lily, raised bands, spine compartments gilt in a similar design, gilt lettering, densely gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. With eight steel-engraved plates, including five folding manuscript facsimiles, 88 wood engravings (the majority head- and tailpieces but some full-page), and EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with 24 engraved portraits of artists whose work is represented in the house and notable personages who visited there, all the added plates with tissue guards. Spine just slightly and evenly darkened, a breath of rubbing to rear joint, mild foxing to a few of the inserted plates, but A VERY FINE COPY--the text clean and fresh, and the most attractive binding with virtually no signs of wear. This is a handsomely bound and extra-illustrated history of one of England's most celebrated stately homes, Holland House, here minutely described with all its furnishings and grounds, along with numerous anecdotes of its distinguished inhabitants. Located in Kensington, which today has long been engulfed by greater London, the mansion began life as Cope Castle, built beginning in 1607 by Sir Walter Cope. From Sir Walter, the manor passed to his daughter Isabel, wife of Henry Rich, who became the first Earl of Holland in 1624. Like the king to whom he was loyal, Rich was beheaded in 1649. Later in the century, Holland House was rented by William Penn, and in 1767 it was bought by Henry Fox, first Lord Holland (1705-74), who held the position of leader of the House of Commons. In its day, Holland House hosted the leading lights of Europe, including Byron and the future American president James Monroe. Our author, Princess Marie Henriette Norberte of Liechtenstein (1843-1931), was motivated to write these memoirs by her friendship with the widow of the fourth Lord Holland. The very attractive binding is the work of French-born binder Lucien Broca (1829-1910), who immigrated to London in 1875. According to Tidcombe's "Women Bookbinders," Broca was a "superb trade finisher" who originally worked for Antoine Chatelin, then went into partnership with German émigré Simon Kauffmann from 1876 to 1889. Tidcombe and Sarah Prideaux's former pupil Katherine Adams believe that most of the bindings attributed to Prideaux between 1890 and 1900--some 290 volumes--were actually done by Broca, with Tidcombe giving the Frenchman credit for the "best Prideaux bindings." Prideaux never publicly acknowledged his work, perhaps for fear of disappointing fans of the most famous woman bookbinder in England. Broca was in business for himself as an "Art Binder" in 1901, and our binding was probably done about that time. The beauty of the present design is dependent on his perfection of finish--crispness of line and solidity of impression were Broca's hallmarks..

Description
1844. First Edition. DICKENS, Charles. The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit. London: Chapman and Hall, 1844. Octavo, modern three-quarter brown morocco, raised bands. $1500.First edition in book form of Dickens' picaresque novel of ""farce, melodrama, and social criticism,"" with 40 full-page etchings by Hablôt Knight Browne (""Phiz""), attractively bound.First issued in 20 numbers from January 1843 to July 1844, Martin Chuzzlewit reflects the disillusionment Dickens felt from a recent trip to the United States, his first American reading tour. As Fielding had sent his Tom Jones to London, Dickens ""adopted the same radical expedient of sending his youthful protagonist not merely to London, but to America. The book's picaresque technique provides him with a large canvas and plenty of opportunity for farce, melodrama, and social criticism"" (Philip V. Allingham). ""You know, as well as I,"" Dickens told John Forster at the time of its publication, ""I think Chuzzlewit in a hundred points immeasurably the best of my stories"" (Ackroyd, 415). The title page vignette was printed from three nearly identical etched plates produced of the same subject (no priority established). This version has ""£100"" on the signpost with the ""1"" blurred, is signed ""Phiz,"" and has six studs on the trunk lid. The vignette title and many of the plates were produced in duplicate and triplicate, with minor variations, but ""since all of these plates were contemporary and used simultaneously in the printing of the parts, there is no first state or priority of the illustration"" (Smith, 67). Bound with the half title. Eckel, 71-73. Smith I:7. Gimbel A72. Plate opposite page 14 reinforced along outer margin on verso; occasional staining or thumb-soiling, chiefly marginal, faint toning to plates, as often. An extremely good copy, in an attractive and fine morocco binding.

Description
[Shanghai; Hong Kong?]: Unknown., [1865?]. Later (?) gilt stamped black binder's cloth over flexible board (spine has several Chinese characters stamped on it).. Very good; title with a small, almost imperceptible perforation-stamp on a blank portion; verso of title with institutional gift stamp dated June 18, 1940 and identified as Miss Elizabeth B Harrold; pastedown with bookplate and note of release and sale.. 8vo, Title, 298, 378 pp.. Some sheets are folded and bound, hence "doubled". Chinese / English text with notes. The Scottish sinologist and missionary James Legge (1815–1897) served as the first Professor of Chinese at the University of Oxford. ‘His greatest and most lasting contribution to transcultural understanding was his massive translation entitled Chinese Classics ... This ... meticulously executed work was the greatest single achievement of Western Sinological scholarship during the nineteenth century and, though dated in style, remained the standard English version of these texts even in the late twentieth century’ (DNB). The first volume contains a biography of Confucius and the texts of the Confucian Analects, the Great Learning, and the Doctrine of the Mean; the second comprises the works of the Confucian philosopher Mencius. The OCLC entries on this series of titles are incomplete (see #122796134 and #18980657). OCLC dates the books "1861". Yet a careful check of the text shows that on p. 156 of the Analects there is a footnote reference to a volume published in 1863. There is also the fact that the paper and typography is atypical. Absent from Cordier and from the Löwendahl catalog, China Illustrata ...., containing other Legge translations; OCLC showing a handful of copies.
