Description
London: John Murray, 1877. First edition. Very Good. Octavo (20 cm); viii, 352, 32 (ads) pages. Ads dated March 1877. Original green cloth, titled in gilt on spine. Foxing to endleaves and to fore edge, else clean and unblemished. In his eye-opening re-appraisal of Darwin's botanical books, Oliver Sachs wrote that Darwin's botanical studies were "engines of war, great missles of evidence lobbed at the skeptics of his theory of natural seledtion" (The River of Consciousness). Sachs observes that the botanical studies are "even more overwhelming" than the author's magnum opus, The Origin of Species, in its presentation of natural seledtion as the basic fact of evolution. Sachs singles out this work, The Different Forms of Flowers on Plants of the Same Species, as particularly significant, in that it explores the theme of co-evolution between two or more interdependent species, such as elongated flowers developing together with insects capable of pollinating them with a long proboscus.

Description
[554] pp. Thick 8vo (194 x 129 mm.), orig. blue screen-printed covers with flaps, Ota-style sewn binding, title screen-printed on spine. Berlin: backbonebooks, 2025. A vibrant homage by Claudia de la Torre (b. 1986) to Virginia Woolf’s 1931 novel, this artist’s book replaces nearly all of the original book’s text with richly printed color pages determined by colors mentioned in the text. The colors and the pages on which they appear are screen-printed on the flaps of the covers. From the artist’s website: “The Waves by Virginia Woolf resists linear narrative, unfolding instead through rhythm, repetition, and interior voices. Inspired by this structure, I created an artist’s book that translates the novel’s language into color. Each page presents a single color reference from the text, rendered as a monochrome surface and arranged in sequence. The result is an abstract visual narrative where time is felt through intensity rather than events—allowing Woolf’s rhythm to guide the flow, like waves across the page.” As new. Edition of 15 numbered copies. This book was awarded first prize for the Fundación Ankaria’s 12th Artist Book Award in 2026.

Description
Philadelphia, 1846. 16 of 18 issues (lacking 1 and 2), bound together in contemporary three-quarter calf, with marbled boards. Pages numbered 33-288. Some leaves browned. General title page is absent; a small bookplate ["Bodichon, Scalands, Robertsbridge"] covers the caption title of No. 3. This is the bookplate of Barbara Leigh Smith Bodichon, notable British artist, feminist writer and women's rights activist, who founded the first women's college at the University of Cambridge. Bound in contemporary quarter calf [rubbed] and marbled paper over boards. Occasional text browning. Except as noted, Very Good. This periodical is a literary anthology of American and British reformist prose and poetry, with significant anti-slavery contributions. The authors included John Greenleaf Whittier, James Russell Lowell, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry Longfellow, John Pierpont, Lydia Maria Child, Harriet Martineau, Lydia Sigourney, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Elizabeth Barrett, and William Lloyd Garrison, who wrote three poems for the journal, one while imprisoned for libel of a merchant he had accused of illegal slave trading. The anti-slavery pieces are not only poetic (most famous being Whittier's "Branded Hand") but also include his essay on the "Slave Market at Washington," Child on the "Economy of Slavery,", the "Declaration of Sentiments of the American Anti-Slavery Society," and principles of the 1838 "Peace Convention" organized by Garrison. LCP 10848. AI 46-7277 [6]. Not in Lomazow or Mott.

Description
[New York: N.P., 1960]. First Edition. Oblong quarto (33.5 x 25cm); 23 sheets of hand-made paper, printed on rectos only and spiral-bound on left side. Inscribed on inside of front cover: "To John and Jean / Good luck on your Buffalo Bill Wild West Show / Love Adolph and Suzanne." Light dusting and subtle, even toning to covers, with shallow, moderate stain to lower right edge of rear cover and terminal leaves; Very Good+ Extremely early and uncommon artist's book by the well-known Milwaukee painter and sculptor. "The Platforms" is a collection of frenetic, barely-figural line studies, providing a satirical view of the 1960 Presidential election; for reasons not entirely clear to this cataloguer, the IBM Corporation is featured heavily (and quite negatively) in the visual narrative - perhaps a reference to the incursion of computer technology into the forecasting of American political contests, which had begun with IBM's UNIVAC computer predicting Eisenhower's victory over Adlai Stevenson in 1956. Rosenblatt (1934-2017) studied with Josef Albers at Yale; in 1966 he relocated with his wife Suzanne to Milwaukee, where he became a long-tenured (and much-beloved) professor of Art at UW-M. The book must have been produced in very small numbers, as OCLC notes only 5 holdings (3 in Wisconsin; two others at MOMA and SUNY Binghamton).

Description
New York: Simon and Schuster in collaboration with Marc Barraud, 1956. Simon and Schuster edition in English. Hardcover. Very Good. 74pp. Quarto [29.5 cm] White cloth spine with photographically illustrated paper over boards. Covers rubbed. With tipped-in illustrations (all present). Designed by Armand A. Bigle and produced by Marc Barraud from the original French language edition "Walt Disney's Lions d'Afrique." An account which is not only a biography of the King of Beasts but of all unique wildlife inhabiting his domain. The story first appeared as a True-Life Adventure film and is now presented here in book form. The color photographs were taken by famed Ketchikan wildlife cinematographers and wildlife photographers Alfred and Elma Milotte, who spent three years following lions in Africa. The Milottes were first hired by Disney to film the Alaska wilderness. Alfred and Elma created the True-LIfe Adventure series for Walt Disney and won six Academy Awards while working for Disney. The couple, married for fifty-five years, traveled the world for four decades. They strangely died within a week of each other in 1989. Walt Disney produced thirteen True-Life Adventure series films in the 1950s. The films were shown in public schools for decades, and it is thought that some students were even influenced to go into environmental careers as a result of seeing these films. "If there is a note of grimness here, it stems from reality of life; if there is a touch of humor, it comes from the genuineness of rich materials, for Nature can be both cruel and kind... both macabre and beguiling... and infinitely, eternally strange." - Walt Disney.
