About very good.
Description
[Kingston: A. Duperly & Sons, 1910. About very good.. Eight glossy sepia-toned photographs, each approximately 6 x 9 inches; matted to 14 x 16 inches. Some creasing and wear, more pronounced on a handful of images. Minor soiling, minimal fading, crisp images. A nice group of photographs from the noted Kingston studio of A. Duperly and Sons, initially established by patriarch Adolphe Duperly in the 1840s. The images here show local life and scenery, including a view of the rebuilt King Street following the 1907 earthquake; local women with baskets perched atop their heads; a man carrying bananas; and several images featuring locals at bends in a river, notably one that shows a dapper Black man seated by a stream beneath some palm trees, his hat resting on his upturned knee. A wonderful representation of the work accomplished by the Duperly studio after it was rebuilt following the Kingston Earthquake of 1907.

Description
Lucena City: Garcia's, 1969. Very good plus.. Fifteen sepia-toned photographs, most 5 x 7 inches, a couple slightly smaller, all but one captioned in the negative. Minor wear, otherwise very nice condition. A collection of fifteen photographs featuring the participants in the 1968 Division Science Workshop in the Philippine city of Lucena. The workshop appears to have concentrated on teacher training for instructors from grades 1 through 11. The present images capture the various training classes during instruction, broken out by grade level, with classes of Filipino men and women taught in English by two white men. Information on chalk boards can be seen in a couple of images. Six of the photographs feature group photographs featuring either the entire population of teacher-trainees or individual grade-level classes. One image features a Division Science Seminar for District Science Coordinator. An interesting assortment of photographs capturing teacher training in a notable Filipino city at the end of the 1960s.

Paramount. No binding. About Fine. [Los Angeles: Paramount, 1932]. Vintage original 8 x 10" (20 x 25 cm.) black-and-white glossy silver gelatin photo. There are light signs of use at blank corners, about fine. Marlene Dietrich was the true writer of the screenplay for this opus which took her from wealth to ruin to rags to fame to wealth again. The censors crossed out so much of her material (even in the pre-Code period) that by the time a final script was approved, she and director/mentor Joseph von Sternberg had little interest in making the film. They came through, though, with a brilliant odyssey highlighted by Dietrich in many moods, all behind heavy diffusion. Here is Dietrich as the down-and-out vagrant Helen Faraday, with Sidney Toler as the detective on her trail. Photo coded 1385-87.

Description
Denver: [publisher not identified], 1881. Menu and program (16 x 9 cm.), two separate cards, printed versos and rectos, [4] pages. Illustrated. Printed menu and program of the Society's first annual banquet held January 25, 1881, at the Windsor Hotel. The Society of Colorado Pioneers was founded in 1872 to recognize and assist those who had arrived in Colorado earlier than 1861, which effectively meant during the three-year period (1858 through 1861) when Colorado was still part of the Kansas territory. The menu is really two menus, one an imagined menu featuring the "Grub" experienced by those arriving in 1859, which included beans, bacon, hard tack, dried apples, and "Taos Lightning". The spirit was a high proof whiskey which distilled in New Mexico starting around 1830, and laden with tall tales. It was said that "Taos Lightning would take the hair off a chihuahua". The much lengthier menu for the dinner consumed that January night in 1881 included raw oysters, mock turtle soup, a larded filet of trout, glazed sweetbreads, quail, etc. The table was bedecked with ornamental pieces depicting scenes of Denver's Western heritage, including The First House in Denver, a Wagon Train, and Indian Teepees. Each card includes a wood engraving printed on one side. The menu card depicts a prospector driving his mule "Over the Range"; the program card shows two riders leading a wagon drawn by six head of cattle, titled "The Sleeper We Came On," both are credited "J.D. Howland, Del. [delineavit] and J.M. Bagley, Eng". John Dare Howland (1843-1914) is often referred to as Denver's first resident artist, and James M.Bagley, born in Maine, (1837 -1910), "the first artist, wood engraver, and cartoonist in Denver". Complete details of the banquet reported in the Rocky Mountain News on January 26, 1881, page 4. Small stain and a bit of other light soil to the menu card; program card is clean. Together, near fine. [OCLC locates one copy of the program only (Denver Public Library; one copy of the menu and program are held by UNLV[.

[Mexico]: [Cieneguita Copper Company?], 1900. Very good. 11 photographs, each measuring 2¼" x 7" and mounted on thick card measuring 5¼" x 10½". All but one with extensive detailed captions. Photos near fine, cards very good -a bit wavy with light edge wear and small flecks of surface loss on versos. This is a group of 11 photographs which depict the Chipiona mining district in Mexico around the turn of the 20th century. Evidence in the captions suggest they were prepared by a surveyor or mining engineer with an eye toward further operational development. The images may have been compiled by an employee of the Arizona-based Cieneguita Copper Company (CCC) as the company had a significant operation in Chipiona at the time. According to a 1906 article in The Engineering and Mining Journal, CCC's Cieneguita's operations had: "four wood-burning reverberatory smelting furnaces, two reverberatory roasters and some 50 roasting stalls. A steam plant, gravity incline and several work shops are in operation. A large company store is also run. Half a million dollars (gold) is said to have been spent on the property. Over 7000 ft. of drifts are said to have been run and a large body of ore opened up. This mine is the best developed in the district and should soon be an active producer." If indeed taken by an employee of the CCC, the images likely pre-date that article, as the operations shown here appear to be in their infancy, and show far fewer buildings than images of CCC's plants in a 1905 prospectus. The photographs show different angles and viewpoints of mostly mining areas. We see guard houses, ruins of an old mill, two views of the Chipiona mining camp and one of the Colorado De Vres camp. The versos are exceptionally well captioned, detailing geography, mine components, progress of mining efforts and more. Over half have an economic/planning aspect to them with detail on measurements, location, potential profit and more such as, "The "Foster Shaft," looking almost due East. "Jerry" on left, Mr. Brodine on right. The pile of rock on their right, and behind them, is ore, and is estimated to be of from $10,000 to $40,000 value. The mountain in back is ½ mile away, across Chipiona Creek. To right is waste pile, with truck. Shaft 235 ft. deep." Or, "The reservoir and stack. Mine hill on left. Reservoir 93 feet long, 60 feet wide, 10 ft deep, holds ½ milliion gallons; said to have cost about $10,000 gold. Taken from corner of old adobe wall that enclosed qudrangle, for protection from Indians." Other captions point out ruins, older buildings and one mentions a cemetery. Also of note are the three which contain manuscript drawings of shafts. A rare collection documenting an early 1900s American mining venture in Mexico.

Description
Salina, Ks: Atherton & Hopkins, 1900. Very good.. Cabinet card photograph, 5.5 x 4 inches, on a slightly larger studio mount printed "Atherton & Hopkins Salina, Kans." Minor edge wear, small "X" handwritten above one subject's head within the image, a few small paper remnants to verso. A striking image of an African-American family of six, a mother and five children, living in Kansas around the last decade of the 19th century. The African-American population in Kansas grew in the 1880s as families left the South to escape the rollback of Reconstruction-era protections. African Americans settled across Kansas, largely in the eastern states. The present photograph was taken in Salina, in central Kansas, about a hundred miles from either Wichita or Topeka. Images of African-American families in Kansas in the 19th century are exceedingly rare.

1899. New York: Dodd, Mead and Company, 1899. Original olive-green cloth decorated and embossed in gilt. First Edition of this early title by this African-American poet whose parents, before they met, had both been Kentucky slaves; his father escaped to Canada, and wound up fighting in the Civil War for the Massachusetts 55th Regiment; his mother escaped to Ohio. Dunbar was born and raised in Dayton, where at Central High School (Class of 1890) he would be the only black student, the president of the literary society, and the editor of the school newspaper; one of his classmates was Orville Wright who, shortly after his mother died, would drop out of school before graduating -- to devote time to his fledgling printing business, and then (1892) to his and brother Wilbur's new bicycle business. Dunbar's first book (published as a favor by Orville's father) came out in 1893; by the time this book came out, he was already ill with the tuberculosis that would claim his life seven years later, at age 33. As with many of his books, some of the verse is in proper English -- for which Dunbar wished he would be known -- and some is in "black dialect" -- for which he was widely known and praised. One of the former type is "Sympathy," which ends with the line "I know why the caged bird sings!" -- from which came (many decades later) the title of Maya Angelou's first book. Despite his intellect, Dunbar's race dictated that he could find work only as an elevator operator (where he tried to sell his volumes of verse to passengers); in this line he was referring to himself in his elevator cage. Included is a frontispiece photograph of the poet; the binding design, in matte and embossed gilt, is by Alice Morse (so initialed). This copy is in near-fine condition (minor rubbing at the extremities, spine gilt less than bright, Christmas 1907 endpaper inscription). Blanck 4925.

"The memorialists represent, that the distance of the port of Philadelphia from the sea, and the casualties to which vessels are exposed in the winter season, have rendered it necessary to erect and maintain piers in different parts of the river Delaware." The expense of maintaining the piers, particularly avoiding their decay, prompts this request for Congress to authorize and fund necessary repairs. Secretary Wolcott advises, "The proposed piers will be useful to foreign vessels, and to American vessels from all the States." He hence recommends that "an appropriation for erecting piers in the river Delaware, below Philadelphia, not exceeding sixty thousand dollars, ought to be made." Evans 34866. ESTC W13468. Description
London: "The Bookman's Journal" Office, 1926 Limited first edition, first printing. One of 470 copies signed and numbered by the author, this being number 207. Publisher's green cloth, with beveled edges, facsimile Conrad signature in gilt to front board, spine lettered in gilt, and frontispiece portrait of Conrad. Near fine, with light toning to spine, a touch of staining to head of spine, mild rubbing to foot of spine, and light toning to frontispiece tissue guard and endpapers. Overall, a clean and attractive copy. This biography makes use of Conrad's personal letters to examine his trip to the Congo River in 1890. Notably, Conrad's experience on that trip inspired him to write arguably his most important story, Heart of Darkness (1899). Georges Jean-Aubry was a French music critic and close friend of Conrad's, who also wrote Joseph Conrad: Life and Letters (1926) and Vie de Conrad (1947), translated in 1957 as The Sea Dreamer: A Definitive Biography of Joseph Conrad.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine.
