Description
Poitiers: J. Thoreau & A. Mesnier, 1638. FIRST EDITION. Complete with approbation, Privilege du Roi, and index with errata on verso. Title printed in red and black. Contemporary original binding of richly gilt morocco, rebacked with the original spine laid down, spine gilt in compartments with raised bands. Presumably decorated with the arms of the family of the Des Cervon, Baron des Arsis, mentioned in the contemporary handwritten inscription in the first blank leaf that reveals that the book was given as an award to a worthy student of the Jesuit boarding school at La Fleche, thanks to the generosity of the Baron. Contemporary ownership notation on title from the novitiate in Paris (Domus Probationis Parisiensis). Despite some dampstaining and browning, an excellent copy from the library of Holland House with their armorial bookplate on the front paste down. First edition of this Latin translation in verse of Annales ecclesiastistici by Cesare Baronio, a history of the first twelve centuries of the Catholic Church. First published between 1588 and 1607 as an official response to the Lutheran Historia ecclesiae Christi (History of the Church of Christ), Baronio’s Annales treats history in chronological order and keeps theology in the background. It was in this work that the term “Dark Ages” in the Latin form saeculum obscurum was coined. The work is dedicated to François de Villemontée (1598-1670), knight and lord of Montaiguillon and of Villenaux and bishop of Saint-Malo. Josset (1598-1663) entered the Jesuit order in 1607. He taught Holy Scriptures and oratory in various colleges, including Limoges, which at the time was very important and when many professors there had their works published. Josset also published a famous book on rhetoric in1650. Baronio (1538-1607) was an Italian Cardinal and historian of the Roman Catholic Church. As librarian of the Vatican Apostolic Library from 1597 he had access to sources and material never before used. Therefore his Annales represent one of the first works on Catholic ecclesiastic history based on critical examination of sources. Indeed, he is aknowledged by Roman Catholic writers as the “father of ecclesiastical history.”.

Description
London: George Virtue, 1847. FIRST EDITION. Complete added engraved title, map, and 78 engraved plates, most of them by William Henry Bartlett. Half-morocco and pebbled cloth, spine gilt in compartments, corners and spine rubbed with some losses, all edges colored red; interior joints partially detached, text toned, occasional browning and foxing. First edition of an exquisitely illustrated and extremely important travel book detailing the history, culture, and religions of Israel and Palestine. Travel to the Holy Land was becoming increasingly popular in the nineteenth century, and this particular work provided an extensive visual representation that gained great attention in America, Great Britain and the Continent. Stebbing strives to describe the topographical scenes as accurately as possible, peppering in historical details when appropriate. Stebbing ( 1799-1883) was a preacher, historian, poet, and editor who is most well known for his works on the church and his work with booksellers in London. As chaplain to the King, he published a number of attacks on leading religious figures. Bartlett (1809-1854), a noted British artist and steel engraver, began his career by sketching the landscape and topography of Great Britain for the architect John Britton. His later traveled to Europe, Turkey, the Middle East, and eventually North America, producing thousands of drawings that were used to illustrate his own works as well as books such as this one.

Much admired edition in a large quarto format of a text Bodoni had printed in octavo the previous year. Intended in part to show off his new Greek capital letters, he printed the entire text on tinted paper in caps and small caps, in sharp distinction to any prior edition. Bodoni was actively trying to expand his commercial market and his reputation into Spain during this period, hence the dedication to Azara, a Spanish noble and sometime resident of Parma.

STRAW MARQUETRY COSMETICS BOX

Description
[France, 18th century]. A two-part round wooden box, approx. 68 mm in diameter x 30 mm. high, the top slightly rounded, top and sides covered in decorative designs composed of bands of straw marquetry overlaid with twisted and embroidered straw-work, the design on upper cover with sections in relief, the bottom of the box undecorated, the interior lined in strips of multi-colored straw. Condition: loss of one hook of the looped ribbon on sides, slight ungluing of straw decoration on bottom part; the straw lining with some swelling and irregularities, but overall in excellent condition. *** A lovely decorative box, possibly a “boîte à poudre” for face powder. The cover is decorated with a flowering plant, its flowers made of tiny flat bands of straw with leaves of interwoven straw, petals and leaves outlined in embroidered straw, and the rest of the surface decorated with embroidered tendrils. The sides of both sections are decorated with a continuous looped garland. “Starting in the 17th century and throughout the 18th century, elegant women carried around their necks or in their pockets a proliferation of bibelots, boxes, tubes and other miniaturized nécéssaires, most intended for perfumes or makeup, They also appeared in their bedrooms.`Their rooms are cluttered with thousands of boxes,’” complained one contemporary in 1642. (Caunes & Baumgartner, p. 148, transl). Sold by marchands-merciers, these accessories came in all sorts of materials, from the most expensive materials like porcelain or ivory, to the humblest, like straw. In spite of the inexpensive and accessible material, straw creations during this period, which often combined the techniques of straw-plaiting, straw marquetry, and a method of using straw in embroidery, could be exquisite. The box was probably made by nuns. Straw marquetry and straw embroidery were associated early on in France with nuns’ handiwork, in the production of both religious and secular objects, often produced for sale outside the convent. Straw was cheap and abundant, and working it demanded skill rather than any expensive materials or sophisticated preparation. To make a palette resembling wood veneer, wheat or oat straw was split, soaked for a time in water, and then ironed. From this basic technique, two main decorative techniques evolved, one using straw marquetry and the other relief embroidery. This little box uses both. An example of a larger box using the same techniques is reproduced by Caunes, et al., p. 62. A similar box, measuring approx 11 x 6 cm, is currently being offered by a New York antiques dealer (for $14,000). While externally the colors of the box are somewhat muted, the original bright colors of the dyed straw strips have been preserved in its inner lining. Cf. Lison de Caunes, Serge Goldsal, & Catherine Baumgartner, La Marqueterie de Paille (Paris: les Editions de l'Amateur, 1993), passim.

Description
Berkeley, CA: Calligraphics. Near fine. Paul Veres (1944 - 2024) was born in a Hungarian Jewish famiy during the worst year of WWII in Hungary. After immigrating with his family to New York in 1949 he would eventually move to Berkeley in 1973. A dedicated studio art educator, he would also design various digital typefaces, with fonts inspired by years of hand-drawn calligraphy work. Veres published, as well, under his own imprint - Calligraphics. The first item was a manuscript scrapbook, titled "My Scrap Book" and possibly created as a school project in the 1950s. Richly illustrated and captioned, it pictured explorers, holidays, etc. and ended with a cheerful anthropomorphic American Flag nad the words: "So Long Folks!" (12 1/4 x 9 1/4; pp. [74]; textured green wraps, tied with a string; illustrations and text in ink, pencils, and crayons; light wear - in very good to near fine condition.) The second was a beautiful, fine-press facsimile, published under the Calligraphics imprint and recreated one of the series of 8 chapbooks by artist and author Joseph Crawhall II (1821 - 1896). ("John & Joan; or, a Mad Couple Well Met [Crawhall's Chap-book Chaplets]." 12 x 9 1/4; pp. [1], 4-15, [5], heavy, loose leaves, folded and tipped into each other; blue, pictorial wraps; lithographed illustrations; very minor creasing to corners; in near fine condition). The third was also a facsimile - this one of Benjamin Sands' "Metamorphosis, or, A Transformation of Pictures, with Poetical Explanations, for the Amusement of Young Persons." First published in 1787, the turn-up book would become immensely popular, with over 30 editions being released before the 1820s. (Single sheet of paper, folded to four 5 3/4 x 3 3/4 panels, each panel with upper and lower flaps; illustrated; very minor wear - in near fine condition).

Description
[c. 1920] Pair of bookends featuring a Scottie dog with front paws elevated, gold-toned metal. Fine. Overall, a hefty vintage pair of bookends for dog lovers. Scottie dogs were popular subjects for bookends in the 1930s and '40s due to their prominence in popular culture, recognizable silhouette, and compact, "boxy" shape, which made them ideal for metal casting. Named after the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts that took place in Paris in 1925, Art Deco was a design movement that flourished in the 1920s and 1930s, characterized by sleekness and geometric lines, and influenced by industrialism, Cubism, Bauhaus, and archaeological discoveries, including King Tut's tomb in 1922. During the height of the movement, Art Deco bookends were popular objects to collect, due to their beauty, affordability, and practicality. Notably, New York City is home to a few of the world's most famous examples of Art Deco architecture: the Chrysler Building, the Empire State Building, and Rockefeller Center. This collection of Art Deco bookends features a wide and wonderful variety of designs and metal types. The sculpted works span historical figures like Roycroft arts-and-crafts community founder Elbert Hubbard (1856-1915), modern dance pioneer and inventor of the "Serpentine Dance" Loie Fuller (1862-1928), and the legendary literary pair Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) and his muse Beatrice Portinari (ca. 1265-1290). Other designs include lions, serpents, whales, seamen, puppies, and cherubs, among many others. The bookends were made by some of the most prominent American art metal companies of the first half of the 20th century, including PM Craftsman (est. 1911), Armor Bronze (est. 1910 as "National Metalizing Company"), Frankart (est. 1924), and Pompeian Bronze Company (est. 1889 as the "Galvano Bronze Company").. Gold-Toned Metal. Fine. 4.5" x 2" x 6.5".

Description
New York: Dover Publications, Inc, 1985. Reissue. Trade Paperback. Very Good. 5x1x8. Minor wear to corners. Binding tight and square, pages clean, bright, and unmarked. 1985 Trade Paperback. xvi, 267, xii, [4], 285, [18] pp. 1985 reissue combining works first published in 1927 and 1937. World Champion from 1927-35 and again from 1937-46, Alexander Alekhine ranks as one of the four or five greatest players in chess history. Edward Lasker rates him the game's supreme inventive genius; Euwe considers him the all-time greatest attacking player. A master of all phases of chess, his games were richly conceived and immensely complex. As Bobby Fischer observes in his writings, "He played gigantic conceptions, full of outrageous and unprecedented ideas." This unequaled collection reproduces Alekhine's 220 best games, his own personal accounts of the dazzling victories that made him a legend. Spanning almost thirty years of tournament play, it includes historic matches against Capablanca, Euwe, and Bogoljubov, and chronicles his brilliant ascent to world mastery, his surprising defeat in 1935, and his dramatic return two years later - the first deposed champion to regain his crown. Between 1927 and 1936 his successes in tournaments were unsurpassed by any master at any time in the history of chess. At San Remo 1930 and Bled 1931, in competitions that featured many of the world's greatest players, Alekhine so outdistanced the field that he was indisputably in a class by himself. In a career including some seventy tournaments, he won first prize forty-one times, tying for first on nine occasions. He won or shared second prize fourteen times. Chess was Alekhine's life; he lived for it alone. And although the final chapter of his career and his life were tragic, his achievements at the chessboard rank him as one of the game's true artists. Filled with Alekhine's own penetrating commentary on strategy and tactics, and enhanced by a revealing memoir, My Best Games is grandmaster chess at its most sublime.
