Description
23/05/1935. He prophesizes, however, that the road ahead for the Jews will be “arduous and very painful”The Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, was founded in 1930 by educator Abraham Flexner, with funding from department store magnate Louis Bamberger. Flexner first recruited noted mathematicians from Princeton University to join the Institute, then broadened its scope by including established scholars in economics, politics, and humanistic studies. In 1932 Flexner offered Einstein a faculty position at the Institute. Einstein’s decision was effected by historical events, as in January 1933, Adolf Hitler became Chancellor of Germany. Soon after Einstein made the decision to resign from his Berlin position, give up his German citizenship, and accept the position in Princeton. The ocean liner Westmoreland, which carried Einstein, at age 54, to what would become his new home country, arrived in New York Harbor on October 17, 1933.Einstein found the Institute, and life in the United States, congenial, so in April 1934, just six months after his arrival, Einstein announced that he was staying in Princeton indefinitely and assuming a permanent, full-time status at the Institute. He would remain in the United States the rest of his life.  Meanwhile, he was very much a celebrity, and was invited to the White House to meet with the Roosevelts. He politely declined, saying he did not want to call attention to himself, a position that German Jews had become accustomed to adopting during the rise of Naziism. However, the First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt, intervened, writing Einstein directly, requesting his presence. So Einstein and his wife Elsa arrived at the White House on January 24, 1934, had dinner, and spent the night. President Roosevelt was able to converse with them in passable German. Among other things, they discussed Roosevelt’s marine prints and Einstein’s love for sailing. On learning that the Einsteins had decided to stay in the United States, Roosevelt suggested that the Einsteins should accept the offer of some Congressmen to have a special bill passed on their behalf, that he would sign, granting them citizenship, so that they would not have to endure the five year waiting period. The Einsteins declined the President’s generous suggestion, saying they wanted to be treated like any other applicant for American citizenship. Because the Einsteins had not been sure of their ultimate destination, and declared themselves as visitors instead of immigrants when they arrived in October 1933, this meant that they would need to leave the U.S. and return again to declare intention to seek citizenship. The United Jewish Appeal (UJA) planned a fund-raising dinner in Einstein’s honor for May 28, 1935. This was exactly the time the Einsteins had set aside to leave the country to perfect their citizenship, so he was forced to decline the invitation. He did, however, provide them with a statement, that was received by the UJA on May 25, the very day the Einsteins stepped onboard the Queen Mary to travel to British-owned Bermuda for a few days to satisfy the formalities. The royal governor was there to greet them when they arrived in Hamilton, and he recommended the island’s two best hotels. Einstein found them stuffy and pretentious. As they walked through town, he saw a modest guest cottage, and that is where they ended up.Typed statement signed, in German, Princeton, May 23, 1935, time stamped as received on May 25, to be read at the UJA dinner and issued to the press accordingly. It takes the moral high ground, but warns of great dangers ahead. ”Unfortunately, because of non-deferrable obligations, I can only express in writing my recognition and gratitude for the assistance provided to the many unfortunate people by the dinner on the 28th of May. We can gain consolation in this critical time if we compare the moral standard of our friends and our enemies with each other.  The result of such a comparison shows us that our way for world history can be considered the better one, even if at times it is arduous and very painful.” Our research indicates that this important statement is unpublished, as the dinner was postponed and it was never released to the press. But even this moving and forceful statement was not enough for the event organizers. Learning that Einstein could not attend, they postponed the dinner. Instead, the $50-a-plate dinner for the benefit of the UJA, arranged by that organization and the Council of Jewish Organizations, was held in New York City on June 26, with Einstein in attendance. About 1,000 people attended the banquet, at which Einstein spoke. In his speech, Einstein returned to the same theme of morality as in the above statement, saying that the ""moral disintegration and intensified national egoism"" of the times requires all Jews to strengthen their ranks to preserve Jewry. Of foremost importance, he said, was the upbuilding of the settlement in Palestine. On June 28, the UJA announced it was using the proceeds from the dinner to aid German refugees in New York City by allocating funds to local agencies equipped to care for the refugees.Einstein reentered the U.S. from Bermuda on June 3, 1935. On January 15, 1936, the Einsteins submitted their declaration of intention to become citizens of the United States.

7/4/14. The Scouting program has used themes from The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling since 1916.The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) was inspired by and modeled on the Boy Scout Association, established by Robert Baden-Powell in Britain in 1908. In the early 1900s, several youth organizations were active, and many became part of the BSA.In 1914 Baden-Powell announced a Junior Section for Scouting. In 1916, he published his own outlines for such a scheme, to be called Wolf Cubbing. Baden-Powell asked his friend Rudyard Kipling for the use of his Jungle Book history and universe as a motivational frame in cub scouting. Baden-Powell wrote a new book, The Wolf Cub's Handbook, for junior members. In 1917; junior members became known as Wolf Cubs.  The Cubbing program used elements of the Jungle Book series, with the Cubmaster taking the role of Akela and the assistant Cubmaster the role of Baloo.Typed letter signed, April 7, 1914, to Philadelphia Boy Scout leader Charles Hart.  “I am much obliged for your kind letter and can only express my regret that I am afraid that, owing to press of work, I cannot see my way to meeting your request for a scouts song.  I am of course greatly interested in the work of the Boy Scouts and wish you all success in your labors.

Description
Portland, 1829. No Binding. Very Good. 50 ¾ x 40 ¼ inches. Steel engraving. Original wash color, refreshed; expertly conserved, re-mounted on new linen; a few cracks & marginal mends but fine for this kind. The very rare (three copies cited in OCLC), first edition of this excellent map of Maine by the state's first mapmaker. An exceptionally well-preserved example. Unlike many early American state maps that struggled to get completed, Greenleaf's received a warm commendation from the state legislature even before it was published, and the mapmaker was granted $1000 to aid him in finishing the map. Greenleaf later received $640 from the legislature for 40 copies of the map that were obtained for state use, a remarkable $16 per copy. Perhaps the large number of copies sold for official rather than private use helps account for the map's present rarity. The map was originally intended to accompany an atlas and survey of the state that Greenleaf published the same year, but very few complete sets of the three items are known to have survived. Greenleaf appears to have taken special care in the production of this map. Although published in Portland, Maine, Greenleaf employed as engravers for this work the estimable J. H. Young and F. Dankworth, both of whom produced major works for the firms of S. A. Mitchell and others. This precisely detailed map, which shows ten counties in different colors, provides state, county, town and township boundary lines. The state's many rivers, lakes, ponds, and even falls are shown as are roads and elevations. The map was re-published in 1844 by Greenleaf's son and namesake from the same plates but with emendations, and several times thereafter. Greenleaf published two earlier maps of the state in 1815 and 1820, but the present work was by far his finest. Ristow, W. Description
Four vols. 8vo, orig. wrappers, orig. stitching, orig. title slips on wrappers (some a little torn). Beijing: San huai tang 三槐堂, 1889-90. First or early edition of this collection of Manchu-Chinese vocabularies with official terms. Manchu was one of the official languages of the Qing empire, and down to the fall of the Manchu dynasty in 1911, certain kinds of government records were kept either in Manchu or in bilingual Manchu-Chinese form. The government recruited bannermen as clerks, largely selected through examinations in Manchu-Chinese translation, who prepared most of these documents. Our collection targeted these clerks and candidates for the examinations, but also bannermen officials holding other posts who would have to compose documents in Manchu. By the scholar Chunhua’s count, Ya shu ming mu contains 416 Manchu-Chinese phrases, including the names of the boards and their subordinate offices, place names in Beijing, the names of palaces, halls, and counties. Gong wen cheng yu contains 1266 phrases used in official prose, whereas Guan xian ming mu contains 780 bilingual titles including reign titles, titles of civil and military officials, and titles of the nobility. Zhe zou cheng yu, finally, contains 573 bilingual phrases useful for writing memorials. Together, the books provide much of the base vocabulary needed by civil servants. Sometimes, the Manchu version of a phrase is more literal than the corresponding Chinese, making these books useful for interpreting occasionally obtuse turns of phrase. For example, qian li ma 千里馬, “a thousand-li horse,” is glossed in Manchu as bithe benere niyalma, “a person delivering a document.” The books were printed between the 3rd and the 12th month of Guangxu 15 (1889-90). Three Beijing commercial publishers issued the set in that year: Juzhen tang 聚珍堂, Mingde tang 名德堂, and Sanhuai tang, our publisher. It is well known that woodblocks moved around among the commercial publishers of Beijing, so probably copies with these different imprints are to be considered the same edition. We do not know which of the publishers printed the book first. The title Qing yu zhai chao does not appear in our collection, but the four titles included here were marketed under this title, hence our inference. The box, which is new, has an original title slip with the title Ch.: Ya shu ming mu 衙署名目, Ma.: Jurgan yamun-i gebu, which is one of the four works included. Yet this is not the title of the collection as a whole. Fine set, some marginal worming, not touching characters, and some minor dampstaining. Preserved in a hantao. ❧ Chunhua 春花, Qingdai Man-Mengwen cidian yanjiu 清代滿蒙文詞典研究, 486-88.

Many black & white illus. 112 unnumbered pages. 8vo (211 x 145 mm.), printed wrappers. Rochester: Visual Studies Workshop, 1986. An uncommon collection of visual poems by the American book artist, Keith A. Smith (b. 1938); this is an early photo-digital book, created using Thunderscan. Printed offset in an edition of 500 copies on Mohawk Vellum 70 lb. There was also a leather-bound edition of 25 copies. The present example is signed by the artist on the title-page. “In Overcast/Outcast Smith takes [it] a step farther. While [Book 115] is almost entirely graphic — a flat pattern on the page — Outcast develops dimensionality with its verbal materials. The thematic concerns of the book — homosexual identity in contemporary culture — is well served by the sleight-of-hand complexities of representation and dissimulation.”–J. Drucker, The Century of Artists’ Books (2004 ed.), p. 248. As new. ❧ Smith, 200 Books (2003 ed.), pp. 196-97.

London: Printed By W. Bowyer and J. Nichols, 1774 Presentation copy, inscribed by the author to noted British astronomer and mathematician Thomas Hornsby to front pastedown: "Pour Mons. Hornsby de la part d l'Auteur". Small 4to. [2], 57, [1] pp. First separate edition, originally published in the periodical Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society in the previous year. Containing one engraved fold-out plate by James Basire. Contemporary marbled paper wrappers. A very good copy with rubbing and toning to wrappers, a few tears and creases to extremities, front hinge starting, small sticker hand-labeled "1" to front wrapper, some spotting and toning internally but text block overall very clean. ESTC T114477. Housed in a custom folding box. Account of a New Hygrometer was first published in 1773 in Philosophical Transactions, a scientific journal issued periodically by the Royal Society of London for Improving Natural Knowledge. Known as the first scientific journal in the world, Philosophical Transactions was a means through which scientists could inform their colleagues of the newest developments in their respective fields, and served as a starting point for all other scientific journals as they exist today. Indeed, Philosophical Transactions established the importance of peer review and scientific priority in scientific publications. This particular article, written by the Swiss geologist and meteorologist Jean-Andre Deluc, details the specifics of his newly developed hygrometer, an instrument used to measure humidity. Though the use of the hygrometer in some form dates back to the 1400s, Deluc was one of the first scientists to modernize the instrument into some semblance of what it is today. This particular copy, one of the few published separately from the Philosophical Transactions edition, was presented by the author to a fellow scientist, the British astronomer Thomas Hornsby. Hornsby, whose work had also been published by Philosophical Transactions, was best known for his work regarding the planning of observations of the 1769 transit of Venus across the sun, which helped lead to several discoveries about the planet.. Inscribed by Author(s). Soft Cover. Very Good. Illus. by Basire, James.

Hirsch IV, 1290. Hoboien 15, 361. Euryanthe was first performed in Vienna at the Theatre am Kärntnertor on 25 October 1823. "For all the weaknesses in the libretto ... Euryanthe is a mature and advanced musical drama, one which was deeply admired by later Romantic composers including Schumann, Liszt and Wagner." TNG Vol. 20, p. 255. Weber was a German composer, conductor, pianist, and critic. "A prototypical 19th-century musician-critic, he sought through his works, words, and efforts as performer and conductor to promote art and shape emerging middle-class audiences to its appreciation. His contributions to song, choral music, and piano music were highly esteemed by his contemporaries, his opera overtures influenced the development of the concert overture and symphonic poem, and his explorations of novel timbres and orchestrations enriched the palette of musical sonorities. With the overwhelming success of his opera Der Freischütz in 1821 he became the leading exponent of German opera in the 1820s and an international celebrity. A seminal figure of the 19th century, he influenced composers as diverse as Marschner, Mendelssohn, Wagner, Meyerbeer, Berlioz, and Liszt. ... ... Like its predecessor [Der Freischütz], Euryanthe involves distinct dramatic spheres with contrasting musical colours. The overarching world of medieval chivalry is suggested by a level of seriousness, artifice, elegance, and brilliance not found in Der Freischütz. Against this chivalric background the dramatic and musical opposition of good and evil is once again crucial to the dramaturgy, the former represented by the troubadour-knight Adolar and his beloved, Euryanthe, and the latter by Lysiart and his accomplice Eglantine. Another dramatic plane is inhabited by the ghost of Adolar's sister Emma, the principal element added by Chézy and Weber to the original plot. Slow, chromatic, and seemingly aimless music for divisi muted violins and violas characterizes the ethereal but restless existence of a spirit condemned to eternal wandering; with Emma's redemption at the end of the opera, however, this music is transformed into a diatonic form. While Euryanthe's dependence on Der Freischütz is evident in a number of ways, there are also features in the later opera that go beyond its predecessor. Weber himself noted in his correspondence with Brühl the more active role for the chorus in Euryanthe. The larger-than-life passions elicit a higher degree of chromaticism throughout the opera than in the earlier work. Because of its through-composed status as a 'grand opera', the tonal organization and instrumentation of Euryanthe were planned with greater ingenuity than ever, and groups of pieces often form extended scene complexes with a clear sense of dramatic and musical progression towards a local climactic goal (e.g. nos.1-4, 12-13, 17-20). And where dialogue separates the formal pieces, Weber composed a flexible, expressive type of accompanied recitative that has little in common melodically or harmonically with conventional approaches to recitative (A.A. Abert, P(v)1967)." Michael C. Tusa in Grove Music Online.

Description
Sacramento, Cal: State Office: J.D. Young, Supt. State Printing, 1888. Slim octavo (23 x 15 cm,), 96 pages. Illustrated with a chromolithograph frontispiece and wood engravings throughout. Several errata have been overprinted in purple ink (rubber stamp?). FIRST EDITION. Byron Martin Lelong (1856-1901) was the Secretary of California's State Board of Horticulture, and amongst a generation of farmer-scholars working and publishing in California in the 1880s and 90s. Others included Thomas Garey and William Andrew Spaulding, and in a different way, Santa Rosa's Luther Burbank, the great seedsman. Lelong's published work focused on citrus, as well as prunes, figs, and walnuts. This treatise is mostly a technical manual on the best varieties of oranges and other citrus to plant in California as well as a guide for how to care for them. It also includes recipes for lemon pie, orange souffle, and citron cake. Illustrations show the physical differences in each variety of citrus, including one of the cross section of a "Pumpel-mouse". Boards lightly scuffed with soiling to margins and fading to spine. Corners bumped and gently rubbed with boards bowing out at fore-edge. Rippling to endsheets with page margins lightly toned. Title page offset by frontis. Text has overprinted errata in blue to correct spellings to a few pages. In publisher's dark blue pebble-grained cloth lettered in gilt. Overall, very good or better. Presentation slip tipped in at first free endsheet, presented by Ellwood Cooper, the then-president of California's Board of Horticulture. [Zamorano Select 65].
