Description
London: [Printed for] the Society for the Encouragement of Learning by S. Richardson, 1738. FIRST EDITION. 240 x 186 mm. (9 1/2 x 7 1/4"). 4 p.l., 187, [1] pp. Contemporary sprinkled calf, raised bands, red morocco label. With engraved device of the Society on title page and final page, engraved tailpiece, and TWO FOLDING MAPS. Church 930; Howes K-36; Sabin 37240; ESTC T115083. Front joint cracked (but the cover still firmly attached), thin half-inch chip to spine at tail of front joint, other minor signs of wear to the leather, but the original unsophisticated binding sound and pleasing. Light scattered foxing (mostly confined to margins), one leaf with a tiny hole affecting a couple of words, other trivial imperfections, but A FINE COPY INTERNALLY, the paper fresh and clean, the maps (remarkably) free from any tears. Tracing the history of Virginia from the earliest English settlements through the first quarter of the 18th century, with valuable notes on the colony's economy and trade, this is a scarce and valuable work by a former colonial official with direct knowledge of the region. The history draws on earlier accounts, most notably the 1705 work of Jamestown-born historian Robert Beverley (ca. 1667-1722), but the more contemporary observations, including those related to agriculture and economy, come from the firsthand experiences of author William Keith (1680-1749), who went to Virginia in 1714 upon his appointment as surveyor-general of customs for the southern colonies in North America. According to ANB, he toured Virginia, the Carolinas, Pennsylvania, and Jamaica over the next two years, charming all he met. In 1717, he became governor of Pennsylvania and, ANB notes, "for five years, from 1717 to 1722, Keith was the most popular governor since the founding of the colony." During his service in the American colonies, Keith wrote reports to the British government that ANB says "helped shape royal policy well into the 1760s." Knowledge gleaned in producing these reports is shared in the present work, which features two fine maps: "A New and Correct Map of America" (measuring 560 x 475 mm.), showing North and South America, with California as an island, with inset views of Port Royal, Boston, Georgia, North Pole and a Newfoundland cod fishery, as well as "A New Map of Virginia" (measuring 340 x 235 mm.) by Thomas Fairfax, dated 1738, showing the Tidewater region of the Mid-Atlantic states, centering on Virginia, with Maryland and [New] Jersey to the north and North Carolina to the south. Thomas Jefferson was familiar with this work, remarking in "Notes on Virginia" that it is "agreeable enough in style, and passes over events of little importance." Keith intended this to be the first in a series on the British colonies in North America--thus the "End of Vol. I" notation on the final page--but the project was abandoned for lack of funds. This work is rare in the marketplace: just two copies complete with maps (one of these in a modern binding) have appeared at auction since 1991..

Description
1889. DUMAS, Tancrede. No. 2 Jerusalem Panorama. Beyreuth [Beirut]: Tancrede Dumas, 1889. Three albumen prints mounted and joined on patterned paper with slits (likely to hold photographs); entire piece measures 37-3/4 by 9-1/2 inches unfolded. $4800.Beautiful large three-part panorama of late 19th-century Jerusalem, with labels for the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the Hurva Synagogue, the Tomb of David, the Holy Sepulchre, the Garden of Gethsemane, and more. This striking panorama depicts the view looking into Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives just outside the city walls, including many major historical and biblical sights from the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, to the Al-Aqsa Mosque, to the tombs of David and Absalom. The photographer, Tancrede Dumas—although born and trained in Florence—is today best known for his work in the Middle East. In 1860, he opened a studio in Beirut and specialized in albumen print portraits of local characters as well as images of interest to religious pilgrims such as this one.. According to information from University of Pennsylvania's Lenkin Family Collection of Photography, this panorama was likely first published between 1880 and 1882. Slightest rubbing to edges, a few very faint spots to images, paper backing beginning to separate from photographs, reinforcement to joints. A lovely and desirable item.

Description
[Lichfield, England], 1736. Oblong document on vellum, upper edge scallopped (143 x 214 mm.), recto with letterpress form accomplished in manuscript, in brown ink (slightly faded but legible, one passage erased), large woodcut armorial initial and 2 pence duty mark, strip of three blue sixpence stamps, red wax seal, paper stamp on verso. (Slight soiling to corners and part of top edge.)*** A bookseller joins the toy trade: Robert Shaw, son of the Lichfield bookseller of the same name, agrees to an apprenticeship of seven years, during which he promises to serve his master, keep his secrets, to not waste or lend his Goods; and “Taverns, Inns, or Ale-houses he shall not haunt, At Cards, Dice, Tables, or any other unlawful Game he shall not play”... For this the toymaker Richard Robinson agrees to pay 5 pounds into the public charity, pledges to feed and lodge his new Apprentice, and (added in manuscript) promises his father Robert Shaw [Sr.] “to fund and provide for his said Son wearing apparell of all sorts as well Linens as Woolens during the said term.” Lichfield, Staffordshire, was the childhood home of Samuel Johnson (1709-1784), whose father Michael Johnson was also a bookseller; as a boy Johnson sometmes bound books for his father to help earn money. Contemplation of the latter’s debt-ridden career may throw light on the motives of his colleague Shaw Sr. in sending his son out to learn another profession. A bookseller Robert Shaw is known from archival sources, including a payment to him in 1737 by Lichfield Cathedral for lettering books in the library (cf. Peter Hanks, The Bookbinder and Historical Invisibility: Bookbinding and the Staffordshire book trade 1750-1850, thesis, University of Wolverhampton [2024]). (Booksellers in this period were more involved in actual book production, and their duties included supplying bookbindings.) A colleague who previously owned this document remarked: “I have not been able to determine how Robert Shaw the Younger fared in the toy trade or if he was able to follow the indenture’s commandment `Taverns, Inns or Ale-houses he shall not haunt,’ which he never could have done if he’d followed his father into bookselling.”

Description
Waterbury, CT: The Waterbury Metal Wares Co, 1929. Very good.. Draft production binder used in creation and revision of a 1929 catalogue of electric lighting fixtures and accessories, belonging to Lauritz W. Andersen, industrial designer and owner of The Waterbury Metal Wares Company. Andersen was a prominent inventor and designer of electrical socketry in the early 20th century; his career can be traced through patent office records, where over 60 items bear his name. He was with the firm of Plume and Atwood for approximately 25 years, leaving in 1915 to form Waterbury. The firm specialized in fixtures and other components for lamps and lighting - including earlier methods (candles, lanterns). Sconces, candelabras, floor and desk lamps, as well as more specialized (piano, drafting) material are much in evidence. The clear, professional photographs, as well as sketches and notes within the binder provide a thorough glimpse into the early industrial design and marketing of electrical lighting. Commercial album. Limp leather wraps over metal ring binding. Printed catalogue with 75 added leaves holding 85 professional black-and-white photographs, loosely corner-mounted. Some stamped on verso with company name. With numerous additional manuscript notations and dozens of sketches. An unmodified copy of the print catalog, a supplemental catalog and various related scrap and ephemera additionally laid in. General wear. Overall sound.

These papers relate primarily to the sea battle between the British warship
Description
London: A. Strahan, 1810. These papers relate primarily to the sea battle between the British warship "HMS Leopard" and the American frigate "USS Chesapeake," that took place in 1807 off the coast of Virginia. "Leopard" attacked and boarded the American ship, searching for British deserters. "Chesapeake" was unprepared for battle and her commander, James Barron, surrendered her to the Brits. The uproar surrounding this event led to Jefferson's embargo of 1807. Manuscript inscription on title page reads, "The Earl of Liverpool..." and the complete title corrected in manuscript reads, "Papers not laid before the Lords Relating to America." Robert Banks Jenkinson was the Earl of Liverpool and the Secretary of State for the Colonies at this time."Contents - Papers relating to the encounter between His Majesty's ship Leopard, and the American frigate Chesapeake. Correspondence between Mr. Secretary Canning and Mr. Pinkney, from September 23, to November 28, 1808. Instructions to the Honourable D.M. Erskine, by Mr. Secretary Canning; and the correspondence between the Honourable D.M. Erskine, and the Honourable Robert Smith." See Howes, P-60, who points out that this collection "Relates largely to the Leopard and Chesapeake affair." (That section occupies 106 pages.) Bound in cloth over marbled boards with paper spine label. Endpapers renewed. Very good condition.. 21 cm. viii, 178, (4 index) pp.

[Chicago]: Swift & Company. Wraps, envelope. Fine. 12 page brochure, plus two large folded sheets with brightly colored illustrations of three different plans and a large outer envelope with illustrations conveying an idea of the contents. Plans are based on the drawings of C.D. Wagstaff, who it is asserted was one of the foremost landscape architects in America at the time. N.d., circa 1930s. N.p., but surely Chicago, where Swift was based. Brochure is 12mo, 18 by 14 cm, envelope is 31.5 by 24 cm, two sided posters, with the plans and designs rendered in color, each 61 by 42 cm. Two of the plans are for comparatively modest suburban homes, one a bungalow, the other, a tidy cottage, and one plan is for a decidedly more upscale residence of a house of eclectic design, with elements of both Colonial Revival and Mediterannean styles. All, though, are shown to be greatly enhanced with extensive, artfully arranged landscaping that creates a dreamy park-like setting. Scarce -- only two institutions listed on OCLC as having this, or part of this -- U. of Minnesota, Canadian Center for Architecture.

[nice clean copy, modest wear along spine, very slight bumping to lower corners, soft vertical crease in upper section of front cover]. (B&W and color photographs) The cover story is "A Toast to Bette Davis!," keyed to that year's recipient of AFI's Life Achievement Award. Feature articles include: "John Frankenheimer: His Fall and Rise," about the then-former wunderkind director who was then undergoing what looked like a mid-career resurgence; "The Lost Legacy of Edward R. Murrow," about the diminished state of CBS-TV's news division post-Murrow (if only they knew what was ahead); "Nitrate Won't Wait," an article about the urgency of film preservation for silent films and early talkies; The Legacy of 'Masterpiece Theatre'" (the cover story); a speculative article about the potential for home viewing of newly-released movies; an article about director Don Siegel; "The RKO Years: Orson Welles and Howard Hughes" by Ron Haver (the conclusion of a 2-part article); "The Moyers Style," an article about Bill Moyers's work for "CBS Reports"; David Thomson's ruminations on how movie stars' images are affected by their (often phony) names. The "Dialogue on Film" is with actress Bibi Andersson, an Ingmar Bergman favorite. Column entries include Larry McMurtry's musings on novels (and films) about Hollywood, and writer Samson Raphaelson's experience as a teacher in the Film Division of Columbia University's School of the Arts. .
