Description
Los Angeles: Edward Ruscha, 1967. RUSCHA, Edward. Los Angeles]: Edward Ruscha, 1962 [ie 1967]. Second edition, one of 500 unnumbered copies. Self published and printed by The Cunningham Press, Alhambra, California. The first edition was an edition of 400 numbered copies printed in 1963. Small quarto (7 x 5 1/2 inches; 179 x 140 mm). 48 pp. With numerous black-and-white photographs. Publisher's full printed wrappers lettered in red. In the original glassine dust jacket. Wittenborn and Company sticker on rear inner wrapper. Overall a fine copy. With numerous photosgrapsh by Ruscha of gasoline stations throughout the American southwest, including California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. "Twentysix Gasoline Stations, a modest publication consisting of black and white photographs with captions, is an iconic artist book. The photographs are of petrol stations, along the highway between Ruscha's home in Los Angeles and his parent's house in Oklahoma City. Clive Phillpot, writer, curator and former Director of the Library at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, observes that the photographs are not reproduced in a linear sequence, with five photographs out of order. Taken from the highway and often including large areas of forecourt or road, the shots appear to be simply factual records of the petrol stations. Each opening of the book reveals one or two photographs in varying but repeated layouts, with the photographs set in relatively large areas of white space. The captions consist of the name of the petrol station and its location (for example, 'Texaco, Sunset Strip, Los Angeles' and 'Flying A, Kingman, Arizona'). The front cover has the title printed in red as three separate lines, the stark brightness of the design muted by the wrap around protective cover. The book is the first in a sequence of photographic artist books by Ruscha. Twentysix Gasoline Stations was first published in 1963 (although the title page states 1962) in an edition of 400 numbered copies. It was subsequently republished in two unnumbered editions. Ruscha's books, and this one in particular, are considered seminal in the history of artist books." (Tate Gallery). HBS 68916. $3,250.

Description
(California, Nevada, and Utah), 1905. Hardcover. Very Good. Large oblong octavo. Brad bound black cloth photo album. Contain 95 black and white gelatin silver photographs mounted on stiff gray cardboard sheets. Most of the images are approximately 3¾" x 5", with a handful 5" x 8". Several have ink captions below the photos. Boards a bit worn and mottled on the spine, the first photo has some chipping at the right margin and has been reattached with cello tape; last two photos show foxing, a few others are slightly overexposed, but most are clear images and overall very good. Included in this collection are three stock photos taken by the firm of Swenson Photo: the seal rocks at Catalina Island; Avalon, Catalina Island; and a sailboat in the moonlight off the island. The amateur compiler also took two photos of "61 yellowtail caught by A.F. Bishop and A.E. Gorham, Weight 1210 lbs." displayed on racks under a sign for the headquarters of the Emerson Bros. Launch, Santa Ana (Catalina Island). Other recreational scenes on the island (approximately seven) show a young boy on a burro, ladies playing a game of billiards, etc. Nine photos of a different excursion, this time to Mt. Lowe, in the San Gabriel Mountains, show the cable car line, the Echo Mt. House, and Ye Alpine Tavern. There are scenes in other parts of Southern California as well. A beach scene at Santa Monica shows the "Camera Obscura" building, which was built in 1899; excavation of stone for a government breakwater at San Pedro; and two views of East Lake Park. This park, originally called East Los Angeles Park, was renamed East Lake Park in 1901. There is a photo of streetcars on Temple Street (presumably Los Angeles), and four of an ostrich farm. In the early 1900's the Los Angeles Ostrich Farm welcomed visitors on the trolley line, opposite the entrance to Lincoln (formerly East Lake) Park. Several of the photos show groups of well-dressed people (a family perhaps) picnicking in parks and strolling under palm trees, workers picking oranges at Riverside, and a young Chinese boy standing in the middle of the street, holding a basket. A handful of images show private residences. The photographer appears to have taken a train trip to other states in the Southwest. There is one photo of a streetscape in Reno, Nevada, showing a handful of buildings with a small gazebo in the forefront, against a hillside topped by a rock formation; another shows "Hot Springs from moving train"; another a street view of Truckee, California, and another of Ogden, Utah. Most curious are 12 photos of a city burning, interspersed in the middle of the album. We have been unable to determine what city this is, though a few clues related to building signs linger. Shown are fire trucks, with hoses stretched out down the streets, what appear to be sandbags, people gathered on the streets, charred remains of buildings and the like.

Description
New York: Frederick A. Stokes Company, 1914. Near fine.. First edition of this delightful tale of young Jack and Betty's romp through various fairy tales and nursery rhymes, with doors to open and holes to peep through. The book relates the adventures of two little children with many humanized objects and animals, told with the help of the clever cut-outs. Each page has a moveable flap or aperture that the child can cut out. When lifted, the flaps reveal part of the next page that also happens to fit into the page one is reading. On one adventure they travel down a telescope into Wonder-land, in another they go to Fairy Land. Printed on coated paper and featuring great color illustrations by George Alfred Williams (who with his wife also produced all the Glue novelty books). Clever - and a nice copy. 11'' x 8.75''. Original red cloth boards with large color pictorial onlay and die-cut hole. Illustrated in color. 64 pages, the majority with moveable flaps or peepholes. Spelling activity on page 24 lightly completed in pencil. Binding with a hint of edgewear. Leaves with occasional faint soil to margins; several flaps with light edgewear, one with a small chip. Colors bright.

London: Printed by W. Strahan, Printer to the Society. . ., 1779. [4], 33, [1 blank] pp. Disbound and lacking the half title, with a clean text. Good+. Page 33 is a form to be used for donating to the Society. A plea to support the work of the society, including missionary work among the "savages" in America. The Society's work has been hindered of late "by the bloody contests which have arisen between Great Britain and the American Continent." Toller suggests that the interruption is "temporary." Toller hopes that the heathen do not fall under the spell of "Popery," which is "the grossest and most pernicious of the "corruptions of Christianity." ESTC T8417.

Description
Philadelphia: Printed for the Author by C. Sherman & Son, 1856. 46pp. Original printed front wrapper, roughly disbound and loosening, Good+. The author, whom Sabin identifies as Colwell, warns North and South about the consequences of their antagonism. "The rabid fanatics of the North have goaded the South until they have roused a class of fanatics there, not less mischievous nor less disposed to assume dangerous responsibilities than those of the North. The reciprocal action of these two classes of fanatics, with passions far outweighing their judgments, has now produced a state of things fraught with no little danger to the whole country." Disunion would be a disaster for the South: "the Constitution of the United States is at this moment the mightiest bulwark of slavery now existing in the world," allowing American slavery-- regardless of the trend toward emancipation in the rest of the world-- to "flourish beyond the reach of harm." FIRST EDITION. Sabin 14916.
