"Isaac Newton Phelps Stokes (1867-1944) was an American architect and housing reformer. John Mead Howells and Stokes worked as partners in the architectural firm Howells and Stokes. In addition to his architectural work, Stokes was an organizer of the Tenement House Committee of the Charity Organization Society, served on the New York State Tenement House Commission, helped write the New York tenement house law of 1901, and designed several model tenements. He had a renowned collection of prints of old New York and was responsible for The Iconography of Manhattan Island, 1498-1909, a six-volume pictorial history published between 1915 and 1928." (New York Public Library). "The Iconography of Manhattan Island represents the result of a two-fold purpose: to collect, to condense, and to arrange systematically and in just proportion, within the confines of a single work, the facts and incidents which are of the greatest consequence and interest in the history of New York City, with special reference to its topographical features and to the physical development of the island; and to illustrate this material by the best reproductions obtainable of important and interesting contemporary maps, plans, views, and documents; in other words, to produce a book dealing with the physical rather than with the personal side of the city's history, which shall be at the same time useful and interesting to the student of history, the antiquarian, the collector, and the general public." (From the Preface). Howes, 1033. HBS 69454. $7,500.

Description
Geneva [Tel Aviv]: [Hotsaat Keren Tel-Hai ve-Shilton Betar], 1939. First edition. Hardcover. g- to vg-. Quarto. [3] 106pp. (single-sided leaves) + photo-illustrated plates. Soft tan cloth boards. This extremely scarce work is a compilation of writings, essays, tributes, poems and articles on executed Irgun member Shlomo Ben-Yosef (1913-1938), who has been seen as a martyr by the Revisionist Zionist community. Interleaved throughout are unpaginated double-sided plates containing b/w photographic reproductions. It was used as effective propaganda for the Beitar movement and other like-minded Revisionist Zionist groups. Although the publication of this work is attributed to Geneva, it is believed that this was an early copy of the work purposely misattributed to the protect the Beitar organization from legal and criminal prosecution from British authorities, and it was in fact printed in Palestine (Tel Aviv). Additionally there is no publisher identified in the book. Ben-Yosef, was a Ukrainian-born member of the Betar movement, who in 1937 emigrated to Palestine and joined the Irgun. On April 21st, 1938 he was one of three Betar members who participated in the infamous failed attack on a bus of Arab civilians traveling on the Tiberias–Rosh Pina road. The attack was in revenge for the recent March 28, 1938 ambush of the car of ten Jews, by Arabs, on the Acre-Safed, resulting in the death of six. Soon after this attempted attack the participants were discovered nearby and in possession of weapons, by British authorities. Ultimately Ben-Yosef was sentenced to death by hanging, while the other two individuals received a life in prison sentence, and a not-guilty sentence by reason of insanity, respectively. Ben-Yosef was executed on June 29th, 1938, and was the first Jew executed by the British authorities during the mandate period. Text in Hebrew. Binding with some rubbing to extremities, including along the spine. Soiling to the covers, especially the back cover. Light to moderate rippling, water staining and/or foxing to the interior covers and endpapers, due to exposure to moisture. Age toning to edges of pages throughout. Book block tight. Binding in good-, interior in very good- condition overall. Hebrew title: ספר שלמה בן־יוסף, משכית גבורי עם ישראל, כרך א׳ aka: Sefer Shlomo Ben-Yosef.

Description
Cambridge: University Press, 1931. First Edition. Very good. Large 4to. Engraved frontispiece ("La belle ecriture demande un esprit gai"), xl, 226 pp. 81 plates. Original light-brown quarter cloth over decorated ("marbled") cloth boards (very small abrasion at tail of spine). Top edges gilt, others untrimmed. Dust-wrapper soiled and defective, inside lined with brown paper. Text, plates, and binding are in splendid state; a lovely copy. First edition, limited to 300 copies signed by the author, of the essential reference work on the history of English writing manuals -- still unsurpassed. Ours is copy 146 and is preserved in very fresh, unmarked condition. This ORIGINAL EDITION is a fine specimen of Cambridge bookmaking and is much preferred over the ugly facsimile reprint (Olms, 1962) which disgraced the beauty of the 23 portraits of the writing-masters and the 58 plates of their copy-books and trade-cards (some of the plates present more than one example). The value of the present volume lies not only in the extensive biographies of the writing-masters, and the extremely detailed bibliographical descriptions of their work, but in Heal's long and insightful Preface, and Stanley Morison's discourse into "The Development of Handwriting." "Mr. Heal has, in this scholarly and important book, proved his contention that his subject [English Writing-Masters] is of deep interest. Moreover, his admirable work is arranged in a manner very convenient for reference. It should prove of great value to students, and have some influence in increasing their number." (Review in "The Burlington Magazine for Connoisseurs," Vol. 61, No. 356 [Nov., 1932], pp. 239-240). ¶ This original edition is uncommon on the market; the last copy to appear at auction was Graham Pollard's which sold in 2013 at Bonham's London.

Description
Dundee, New York: Various Printers/Publishers, 1869. Good. Most around 9¼” x 5½”, three around 6” x 4”. Self-wrappers. Most pp. 8-16, one pp. 26. Generally good or better: a few with partially or fully detached wrappers or leaves; some edge wear, chipping, dust-soiling and spotting; a few with inked notations or signature. This is a collection of minutes from yearly meetings of a religious organization in Upstate New York, the Steuben Baptist Association (SBA). They are notable for their wide range of printing styles, having been produced by thirteen different printers in a small area in Upstate New York. Ephraim Sanford was a Revolutionary War veteran and devout Baptist who came into Steuben County in 1793 as the first permanently settled minister of any denomination in the upstate Finger Lakes region of New York. He was pastor at the Wayne Baptist Church from its inception in 1794 until his death in 1836. It was at this location that the SBA was founded in 1818 – in that first meeting, eight churches were represented by 18 delegates. Sanford's congregation continues to this day with membership in the Finger Lakes Association of the American Baptist Churches of New York State and the American Baptist Association. A Centennial History of the Steuben Baptist Association (Courier Press, 1917) provides general information about the SBA as well as the annual meetings. The minutes on offer enhance that book with great detail such as this from the 50th anniversary in 1867, “The historian found that 48 different churches had been connected with the Association: that there had been 137 ordained ministers in these churches; and that little more than 6000 persons had been baptized into these churches on the profession of faith in Christ. He also states that a missionary spirit had been encouraged, precious revivals enjoyed, and a good degree of spirituality found at all their gatherings.” Along with showing the growth and accomplishments of the organization over the years, the minutes reveal a breadth of printing styles among New York printers and publishers. The books began to be printed with colored wrappers in 1847, and two of the years' meetings are represented here in duplicate, with different colored wrappers. Notably, the 20th anniversary book from 1837 has an ownership signature of a woman, Susannah Williams. While women were members of churches in the region as early as 1815, they typically were not seen as active participants, and the Women's Missionary Society of the SBA wasn't organized until 1876. Scarce and rich documentation of New York Baptist churches and local printers. OCLC shows five entities with limited holdings. A list of all the minutes and their printers is available.
