Description
[the artist], 2000. Plastic comb-bound book (15 x 10 cm.), 16, [1] pages. Illustrated in black and white and with color ink jet prints pasted down onto blank leaves; a yellow Post-it with handwritten note, "vomit", and a short handwritten text, "other side of the hole" with a pinhole by the artist in the final leaf (note the copy reproduced in Bessire's monograph has no modifications). Signed by the artist, "Pope L." and with a small sticker with the image of a pitcher, both on the rear wrapper panel. ~ Stated "Volume 2" which we understand to be the documentation of the second of two performances of the work. There were at least four books in this series (the final labeled Volumes 4&5). Documentation to accompany a performance piece by the visual artist William Pope.L (1955-2023), the self-described "friendliest black artist in America". The piece, titled Eating the Wall Street Journal (2000), included the African-American artist perched on a toilet atop a large wooden tower alternately ingesting the capitalist daily, flour, milk, and mayonnaise. Eat Notes contains a description, with illustration, of Alcohol Shelf, and notes on consumption and holes. "Pope.L was a visual artist and educator whose multidisciplinary practice used binaries, contraries and preconceived notions embedded within contemporary culture to create art works in various formats, for example, writing, painting, performance, installation, video and sculpture. Building upon his long history of enacting arduous, provocative, absurdist performances and interventions in public spaces, Pope.L applied some of the same social, formal and performative strategies to his interests in language, system, gender, race and community. The goals for his work were several: joy, money and uncertainty— not necessarily in that order." (Mitchell-Innes & Nash). Signed by the artist, "Pope L." and with a small sticker with the image of a pitcher, both on the rear wrapper panel. [OCLC locates no copies; Bessire. Description
[New York]: Lith. of W. Faust, 105 Nassau St, 1860. Broadside wine list (25.5 x 15.5 cm.), [1] page. Porcelain card decorated in chromolithograph with text in blue and red. A very early wine list from an important New York hotel and dining establishment. The hotel was at the corner of Broadway and Eleventh Street, across from Grace Church and Rectory. Both the hotel and the church were designed by the architect James Renwick Jr. Named for its original owner, Denis Julien, the St. Denis Hotel opened in 1853, just in time for the Crystal Palace Exhibition. The building was leased to William Taylor in 1875, who incorporated the Taylor Saloon into the facility. The list features Clarets from Finke, Merman of Bordeaux, mostly from 1847 and 1848. And French whites including 1847 Latour Blanche and 1847 d'Yquem. Champagne, Sherries, and Madeiras are also included. A solid piece of printing, from a firm more known for fruit labels... Verso contains an unattributed primitive pencil drawing of a horse. Some darkening to the top edge of the recto.

A very good copy.
Description
London: J Johnson, 1775. First Edition.. recent half leather and marbled bds... A very good copy.. 8vo. Hartley was a medical practitioner who formulated a theory relating mental processes to physiological concomitants. The theory of vibrations and their association are the basis for higher intellectual processes. Along with Hume and Berkeley Hartley's book formed the speculative base for the philosophy and psychology of mind in the 18th century. Hartley's original thought on the association of ideas introduced an important concept in psychology. Priestley generally supported the views of Hartley. He did, however, omit the theory of vibrations but accepted the mechanism of association of ideas and theory of mind. The essays noted in the title are Priestley's commentary on Hartley's method and conclusions and illustrate his scientific materialism. A difficult book to come by in the trade. Crook PM - 365; see Wolf, 18th Century.
