Description
Farnham: Lund Humphries, 2013. English Edition. Hardcover. VG. Illustrated boards, no dj. xiii, 498 pages : illustrations (chiefly color). A Century of Israeli Art presents the story of modern Israel's visual culture, beginning with the pre-state years of Zionist art in the early 20th century and extending to the present day, as a new generation of Israeli artists rises to international prominence in the 21st century. Framing artistic developments in the context of successive periods, author Yigal Zalmona describes the many ways in which Israel's art has been influenced by its social and political history. This look at the wider picture goes hand-in-hand with detailed, enlightening analyses of seminal artworks from every period. Zalmona surveys the early days of the Bezalel School, founded in 1906 in the spirit of the Arts and Crafts movement; Land-of-Israel art during an era of nation-building; the pre-eminence of international modernism and Lyrical Abstraction after 1948; social-activist and conceptual art in the 1970s; and the recent embrace of photography and video. Throughout its evolution, Israeli art has reflected a complex cultural discourse revolving around questions of identity - Western versus Eastern, local versus universal, national and ethnic, collective and personal. Drawing on the author's decades of accumulated knowledge and activity in the field of Israeli art - as historian, critic, teacher, and curator - and aimed at a broad audience, this book will be fascinating reading for art-lovers and for all those with an interest in Israel's cultural history, offering a compelling example of the interaction between visual art and a dynamic, multifaceted society. -- Provided by publisher. Contents: Zionist aesthetics: Jewish artists in late-nineteenth-century Europe -- The Bezalel school: early arts and crafts in the land of Israel -- Modernism and the fascination with the east -- A decade of conflict: localism and universalism -- Nimrod: a case study in art, history, and identity -- Art in the service of nation-building -- New horizons -- The birth of now -- The seventies: exploring the boundaries of art -- The eighties: back to painting -- The return of the real? -- The beauty of weakness.

Description
Condé Nast, 1970. Original illustration for an article published in January 17, 1970 of The New Yorker. Matted with magazine clippings and the caption, "Meters." Black marker on Bristol board, drawn by unidentified New Yorker staff artist. Frame measures 17.2 in. x 11.75 in. In Very Good condition. Shelved at Rockville Room C. Second Story Books is honored to offer this item from the personal collection of Neil and Susan Sheehan. Neil Sheehan (1936-2021) and Susan Sheehan (born 1937) were a distinguished husband-and-wife team whose careers helped define American literary journalism in the second half of the twentieth century. Neil Sheehan, a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter for The New York Times, is best known for his role in bringing the Pentagon Papers to public attention and for his landmark book "A Bright Shining Lie", while Susan Sheehan built a parallel reputation as a leading voice at The New Yorker, crafting deeply reported narrative nonfiction on subjects ranging from mental health to social institutions, earning her own Pulitzer Prize in 1983. Their longstanding ties to major publications, particularly The New Yorker, placed them at the center of an influential cultural and intellectual network, and artwork from their collection carries added provenance through this close connection to the magazine's editorial and artistic community. 1411754.
