Description
Numerous full-page woodcut illus. in the text. 18 parts in nine vols. 8vo, orig. wrappers, orig. block-printed title-slips, new stitching (some loose). [From colophon]: Osaka: Kawachi Mohachi et al. & Edo: Yamazaki Kinbei, 1771. First edition to be printed in Japan, in Chinese with Japanese reading marks, of "China's greatest technological classic"-Needham, Science and Civilisation in China, Vol. 4, Part II, p. 171. This book first appeared in print in China in 1637, and copies soon reached Japan. The Japanese editor was Eda Masuhide 江田益英. The book is divided into the following sections: 1. agriculture, irrigation, and hydraulic engineering; 2. sericulture and textile technology; 3. agriculture and milling processes; 4. salt technology; 5. sugar technology; 6. ceramics industry; 7. bronze technology; 8. transportation, ships and carts; 9. iron technology; 10. coal, vitriol, sulphur, and arsenic; 11. oil technology; 12. paper-making; 13. metallurgy of silver, lead, copper, tin, and zinc; 14. military technology; 15. mercury; 16. ink; 17. fermented beverages; and 18. pearls and jade. Needham considered the illustrations in the 1637 edition, upon which the illustrations in our edition are based, to be "the finest of any produced in China on these subjects, and in many cases the only ones" (p. 172). Song (1587-1666) has been called by Needham (Vol. 4, Part III, p. 382), "China's Diderot." Nice set, preserved in a box.

Very Good
Description
Hardeck, Bavaria, 1817. Full Morocco. Very Good. A magnificent example of Folk Art and Peasant Rococo decoration. 12mo. 17.5 by 10 cm. 246 pp. Created by Thoma of Hardeck, in Bavaria, for his betrothed, Maria Dorothea Zeidlerin of Maiersreith. Hardeck is now a district of Bad Neualbenreuth which is by the Czech border, and we assume that Maierreith was a nearby village now also absorbed by a larger municipality. This manuscript prayer book abounds in art. It is tricky and elusive to give a precise accounting of the quantity, given the subjectivity of distinguishing ornamental vignettes, which are generally repeated and generally are stereotypical watercolored decoration in such manuscript prayer books, such as flowers and foliage, and pages dominated by artwork that can claim more originality in its actualization, even if the subject matter is that which one finds in virtually every such manuscript prayer book and ubiquitous generally in Catholic literature and artwork. Nonetheless, we would say that between 15 and 20 pages are fully or mostly covered with artwork, and twenty or more pages have vignettes beyond the border bands which appear on every page. Plus there is, on a separate card, a watercolored rendering of the Virgin Mary. Some of the watercolor illustration is heightened in gold, thereby justly qualifying the artwork as illuminated in the fuller sense. The binding shows some wear, with minor loss to the leather. The title page suffers from moderate staining, with a resulting blurring of a few letters. Minor staining crops up throughout the manuscript.

Description
Edinburgh, 1856. Simpson, James Young (1811-70). Carte-de-visite portrait photograph by Ross & Thomson. Edinburgh, ca. 1856-58. 97 x 55 mm. (mount measures 102 x 64 mm.). Fine. An excellent photograph of Simpson in his mid-forties, showing him seated at a small table holding what appears to be a pen and paper. Simpson introduced the use of ether anesthesia in childbirth in 1847, and in the same year became the first to demonstrate the anesthetic properties of chloroform on humans. The Edinburgh photography firm of Ross and Thomson was established in 1848 and remained in business until at least 1864. The present photograph is stamped on the verso with the firm's address at 80 Princes Street, which they occupied between 1856 and 1858. .
