NY, Marguerite and Louis Henry Cohn, 1947, first edition, wrappers. Softcover.. First and only edition, No. 7 of only 60 copies printed by Ward Ritchie, with its original white paper envelope which is also No. 7, the first 10 copies went to Steinbeck with the remainder going to the Cohns (House of Books) for Christmas gift presentation, this elusive "A" item is a letter from Steinbeck to Arnold Gingrich, editor of "Esquire," thanking him for sending a watch as a gift, the letter is full of Steinbeck's typical humor noting that he had expected a watch when he graduated from high school, but none was forthcoming, and since he didn't actually graduate from Stanford University he likewise hadn't received a watch as a gift, Goldstone & Payne A26a, Morrow 199 and 200. Fine.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1934. 1st US Edition. Not listed in Hanneman. Yellow cloth with black lettering. Light orange topstain. Pictorial dj showing a bullfight [by Roberto Domingo]. VG (a bit cocked)/VG (minor wear & soiling).. [8], 439, [1 (blank)] pp. 8vo. 8-1/4" x 5-5/8" Hemingway assisted Franklin with dialogue in the translation- "... Have been working at a heavy clip ... Then edited, cut, and rewrote dialogue of a 422 page translation of a Spanish novel Sidney Franklin has done for Scribner's. Was a rather hard job as the book is trashy and I had to take attitude that here was a bad book I had written; now go over it and see if you can make it a good one. At the same time did not change any of its style. The day I finished that was so sick of trash that decided to write a story to rinse my mouth out and started one that ran to over 100 pages of manuscript" ["One Trip Across"]. Hemingway to Mrs Paul Pfeiffer, Madrid, 16 Oct 1933. From 'Ernest Hemingway, Selected Letters, 1917 - 1961' / edited by Carol Baker [NY: Scribner, 1981]. Hemingway also noted in this letter that Franklin just recently out of the hospital due to an old bullfighting injury- perhaps an incapacitated friend under deadline the impetus for this extensive assistance by the future Pulitzer-prize winner? It is interesting to note, however, that the dj blurb on Franklin states- "Mr Franklin was obliged, he says, to learn American slang all over again before he could proceed with the rich and lusty jargon of the bull ring and its habitués." Perhaps now we know who was Franklin's tutor in his relearning of the 'rich and lusty jargon!'.

Description
1980. [Palestine] [Social Activism] Archive of two pieces regarding the rights of Palestine. One pamphlet presented by the United Nations, and a handbill presented by the Palestine Liberation Organization. 1970s-1980. Set includes: The Palestine Question: A Brief History. New York: United Nations, 1980. First edition, Stapled wraps, 25 pages, measuring 5.5" x 8.5". This pamphlet studies the roots of the Palestinian conflict and its present state circa 1980. Prepared for, and under the guidance of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People. Selected quotes include: "Until recently the Security Council's approach to the Palestine issue has been confined to the framework of its resolution 242 (1967) of nearly 13 years ago. However, the General Assembly, reflecting the will of the majority of the community of nations, has extended recognition of the fundamental rights of the Palestinian people."... "The Palestinian people now number approximately 4 million a population larger than that of many Member States of the United Nations. About half-a-million of the Palestinians live in Israel. Another 1,200,000 live in the occupied territories of the West Bank and Gaza. The remainder are in exile; many still in refugee camps, many as foreigners in other countries. The majority of those in exile still hope to return to their own country."... "The United Nations has recognized that a fundamental factor in averting this threat to world peace is to enable the Palestinian people to exercise its inalienable right of self-determination, national independence and sovereignty in Palestine."; Basic Facts About the Palestine Problem New York: Palestine Liberation Organization. Undated but seems to be from the 1970s. Printed on both sides. 8.5" x 11". The handbill lists three sections of informational factoids beginning with "Do You Know" arguing for the right of Palestinians to the territory of Palestine over the state of Israel. One quote states "...1947 recommendation to create a "Jewish State" in Palestine was approved, at the very first vote, only by European, American, and Australasian States...for every Asian State, and every African State (with the exception of the Union of South Africa) voted against it?" Minor fading, and a small .5" tear to the left side of the handbill. Overall very good condition. An early set of pro-Palestinian documents.

Description
NA. Very Good. N.d, circa 1840. The fan is 23.5 cm tall, and when spread out with its 18 spokes, spans 43 cm wide. The paper uses has a thick texture similar to antique wall paper of the Biedermeier Period. The scene contained in the lozenge oval lozenge inset is a pastoral scene of three young women of the period flirting with a dashing young man in breeches. Surrounding them are sheep. The ladies seem perhaps too well appointed to be more than playacting at being shepherdesses, but clearly the man is high born and not a peasant. The floral ornamentation surrounding the picture is in a folk art simple style, again such as one might find as a repeat on a wallpaper. The paper on the fan has general wear, with some minor tearing along the edges. Overall the fan is an attractive antique.

Cortaro: Thorn Books, 2009. Limited edition. Stapled wraps. Fine. 8vo. (16pp.) Stiff stapled wraps. Includes a color facsimile of the eight page pamphlet printed in Lubeck around 1492 by Matthaeus Brandis. Introduction by James Owens. In 1492, twenty seven Jews of Mecklenberg were burnt at the stake in Sternberg on a charge of desecration of the host. That same year, or shortly thereafter, Brandis issued a pamphlet telling the tale. A complex woodcut graced the first page; the text is in a combination of Low German and Latin. This is a color facsimile of that pamphlet, bound with a short introduction in English. The original incunable is considered lost in WWII. One of 100 numbered copies. New.
