About Fine
Description
London: C. Arthur Pearson Limited, 1897. First edition. About Fine. Original red publisher's cloth binding with gilt titles to spine and front board; black illustration to front board. The front inner hinge has been repaired, but otherwise the copy is in exceptional condition. A book that is often plagued with condition issues from faded cloth to brittle paper. This is a superior copy: bright, clean and unfaded, about Fine. H.G. Wells connects science with philosophy in this novel, which reimagines and modernizes Plato's tale of the Ring of Gyges. According to Plato, the power of invisibility could corrupt anyone possessing it, giving them the upper hand over friends and enemies alike. Wells' lead character Griffin, a scientist, succeeds in doing just this. "Griffin gives in to many of the same temptations. He robs. He injures. He kills...But even though Griffin is guilty of his share of crimes, his goal is not to indulge in hedonism. His goal is just the opposite: he wants to stop being invisible" (Frederick). Ultimately, the practical problems of being an invisible human work counter to Griffin's interests. The need to be clothed, the isolation from other humans lead to Griffin's downfall and death at the hands of a terrified mob. Indeed, much as his actions dehumanize Griffin, his invisibility allows the mob attacking him to treat him as less than human. An exceptionally important consideration of the benefits and dangers of science, and the definition of humanness at the turn of the century. About Fine.

Description
London: Blackie & Son Ltd, 1921. Hardcover. Good +. Wain, Louis; Stewart, E.H.. Folio size, 62 pp. English artist Louis Wain (1860-1939) is known for his trademark anthropomorphic cats, who live in a rich, vibrant world and display playful personalities amidst their alphabetised actions. According to H. G. Wells, "[Wain] has made the cat his own. He invented a cat style, a cat society, a whole cat world. English cats that do not look and live like Louis Wain cats are ashamed of themselves" (n. b., quote from Wikipedia). For this whimsical alphabet book, Wain creates a series of colour illustrations for each of the twenty-six letters, with captions for each image written in verse. In addition to Wain's ABC section, there are an additional four sections; the second presents the ABCs in a series of hunting scenes (uncredited), the third is also an ABC with anthropomorphic animals of all types (also uncredited); the fourth section, illustrated by E.H. Stewart, follows young children through their day, with each hour of the day properly alloted (e.g., "Seven O'Clock: Waking Time", etc.), the fifth and final section is yet another ABC (also uncredited), setting forth the characters and events when "Amy, her age it was eight" said "I will give an At Home of my own" (please note: there are several scenes in this section presenting stereotypical Golliwogs, which are now considered highly racist). This work is scarce in the marketplace, with no other copies online as of this writing; OCLC locates only three copies (Princeton, Bryn Mawr, and Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin); we see a single auction record (RBH). Interestingly, although Baumgarten lists numerous Wain titles it does not include this work, although it is included in Dale. Volume undated, we believe it to be a 1921 publication based on both Dale and a record found online where the book is listed in "The Saturday Review" for 19 November, 1921. ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in cloth-backed boards, the front board with a full-colour illustration (by or after E.H. Stewart) and the back board covered in plain grey paper, the front endpapers pictorial, with a series of small line drawings of children in blue and the rear endpapers plain, the front free endpaper serving as the title page, every page of each section with colour illustrations; folio size (13 3/8" by 10 1/4"), unpaginated with sixty-two pages (of which the front free endpaper and its verso consitute two). ___CONDITION: A bit better than good, the text block strong although the hinges are tender, the interior is bright with a few stray marks, the sole prior owner marking a child' name, written in a child's hand, on the (blank) verso of the title page/front free endpaper; the binding is generally worn with the corners rubbed, there is overall soil with some marks, and some toning to the free endpapers. Although the binding has been generously used, still a sturdy, good overall copy of a scarce Wain item. ___CITATION: Rodney Dale, "Louis Wain, The Man who drew Cats", p. 136. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Description
HARRY TRUMAN (1884-1974). Truman served as the 33rd President. TDS. 1 pg. 8 x 10 N.d. White House. A typed document signed Harry S Truman as President: CITATION FOR LEGION OF MERIT Degree of Legionnaire Lieutenant Colonel Sergei Stapanovitch Sergeeff, 20th Budapest Guard Infantry Corps, Red Army, displayed exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services contributing materially to the success of combined operations in Europe. The Legion of Merit is a military award of the United States Armed Forces for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services and achievements. The award can be issued to members of the eight uniformed branches of the United States Armed Forces, but also to military and political figures of foreign governments. It is seventh in order of precedence of all U.S. military awards. Notable recipients of the Legion of Merit include Joe Louis, Colin Powell, King George VI, Chiang Kai-shek, Charles De Gaulle, Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, and Narendra Modi. Given how quickly U.S.-Soviet relations deteriorated after World War II, it is likely this specific citation was awarded in the early years of the presidency of Harry Truman. The document is in fine condition.

1900. New York: Doubleday, Page & Co., 1900. Original tan cloth decorated in dark green. First Edition of Ellen Glasgow's third book -- a tale of the Reconstruction Era -- the first volume in a trilogy (followed by BATTLE-GROUND in 1902 and THE DELIVERANCE in 1904) that deals with life in Virginia from the end of the Civil war until the turn of the century. THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE is set in Kingsborough, Virginia (modeled upon Williamsburg), and portrays the social stress caused by the rise of the rural lower class during the years immediately after the Civil War. Ellen Glasgow, born and raised in Richmond, would go on to win the Pulitzer Prize in 1942, for IN THIS OUR LIFE. This is a handsome copy, fine except for the slightest of darkening of the spine.
