Onna shoreishū provides a comprehensive guide to the customs and formalities expected of upper-class women. More than a moral treatise, it details cultural and social etiquette, covering seasonal clothing, ritual preparation, wedding ceremonies and the bridal selection process, palatial womanly and wifely duties, childbirth and child-rearing customs, and even permissible food and leisure activities during mourning. Its richly illustrated pages include usage instructions, precise measurements, and depictions of material objects. The 17th century saw the consolidation of peace under Tokugawa rule and the rise of a highly stratified, propriety-emphasizing society. Social stability was reinforced through codified roles, fueling demand for conduct books (reisho 礼書). Part of this growing genre, Onna shoreishū targeted literate women. The rules were often written by Confucian scholars, Buddhist monks, or experienced women from samurai or courtly backgrounds to educate younger generations in the proper way of life. Primarily intended for samurai wives, daughters, and affluent merchant women, it helped them navigate Edo’s complex social expectations. The book reflects a world where class distinctions were visually reinforced, etiquette governed every aspect of life, and women — despite their subordination — were central in maintaining family prestige, economic stability, and cultural refinement. The colophon of the sixth volume states: “The way to discipline a woman is numerous, even for a thousand generations. Now supplemented and expanded, the etiquette of famous women.” This reflects its purpose: not just to instruct but to ensure these behavioral codes endured across generations. Conduct books like this remained popular well into the 18th century, later appealing even to commoner women who, through cheaper reprints, could glimpse the once-exclusive customs of the elite. This work contains many fine double-page and single-page woodcut scenes of luxurious kimono by seasons, processions, a dowry, birthing, ceremonies, offerings, layouts of banquet dishes, a finely appointed kitchen, etc. Fine set and rare; according to WorldCat, there is only one copy of this edition, at Kyoto University. This copy originally owned by American radio broadcaster and newspaper columnist George Ephraim Sokolsky (1893-1962), with his pictorial bookplate mounted to front pastedown, and his holograph signature ("George E. Sokolsky / School of Journalism / Columbia University / New York City") at upper right corner of front endpaper. Beneath his signature is a holograph note in Emma Goldman's hand: "First copy sold to George Sokolsky." "Witnessed by:" (also in her hand), followed by the holograph signatures of Alexander Berkman, Rebecca Edelsohn, and M. Eleanor Fitzgerald, and dated N.Y. April 30, 1914. Circular rubber stamp of the Otis Free Public Library (Otis, MA) on lower front pastedown, with an unused library "Date Due" card tipped onto rear endpaper, and beige trapezoidal paper remnant mounted to lower rear pastedown. Moderate wear, sunning to spine, with old, faint dampstaining to 3/4 of rear cover and base of spine; contents clean, but for some neat underlining in Sokolsky's hand on pp.175-176, and a brief note written horizontally in the left margin of p.3, that this was gifted (presumably to the library) in 1950; just Very Good, lacking the rare dustjacket. Goldman's treatise on the political implications of significant playwrights in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The book featured Goldman's analyses on the political - even radical - work of Scandinavian, German, French, English, Irish, and Russian playwrights, touching on works by Ibsen, Strindberg, Sudermann, Hauptmann, Rostand, Shaw, Galsworthy, Yeats, Tolstoy, Chekov, and Andreyev, among others. A distinguished and most curious copy - apparently the first copy off the press, sold to Sokolsky while he was still a student at Columbia University's School of Journalism, where he was a leader among student radicals. Sokolsky was part of the welcoming committee for Leon Trotsky when he arrived in New York in January, 1917. Shortly thereafter, he went to Russia and began writing for the English-language Russian Daily News, though after the Kerensky government was overthrown by the Bolsheviks, he became disillusioned with the revolution. The Bolsheviks kicked him out of Russia in March, 1918, and with Trotsky's assistance he was able to flee to China, where he spent the next 14 years working variously as a special correspondent for English-language newspapers, an informant, propagandist, and political adviser to Sun Yat-sen. After his return to the U.S. in 1935, he became stridently anti-communist, ultimately becoming both a vocal supporter of and mentor to Senator Joseph McCarthy. This copy is a relic of Sokolsky's most radical period, bearing a quartet of signatures from some of the 20th century's most prominent anarchist voices: Goldman and Berkman, but also Rebecca Edelsohn (1892-1973, Berkman's lover, and the first political hunger striker in America), and Mary Elizabeth Fitzgerald (1877-1955, an intimate of the Goldman/Berkman circle, member of the Provincetown Players, and co-editor of The Blast with Berkman after they relocated to San Francisco). Clean and bright with a single old very faint horizontal fold mark, and an old number in ink to the upper right corner, a fine example. A call to the anti-fascists of Zara, now Zadar on the Dalmatian Coast of Croatia. At the beginning of WW2 Zara was occupied by the Italian fascist forces, then subsequently by the Nazi 114th Jäger Division who were tasked with eradicating Partisan forces on the Dalmatian Coast, and who commited a number of atrocities and war crimes in the execution of this task, along with the Fallschirm-Panzer Div. Herman Göring they were amongst the most despised German units in the region. Zara was subsequently carpet bombed by the Allies, causing massive civilian casualties and enormous cultural loss and destruction to a city which is credited as the oldest continuously occupied community in the region, with regional traces going back to 4,000 years BCE. Subsequent to the fall of the Reich and the end of WW2, Zara was formally renamed Zadar and became a part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. "All Anti-Fascists of Zara (persecuted by the former fascist regime) are invited to participate in the meeting that will be held on 1.xii.1945 in the hall of the Caffe Centrale for business that concerns them. Death To Fascism - Freedom to The People! The Committee" The Caffe Centrale still exists, and is still a well known cafe in the old quarter of Zadar, a piece of trivia made even more amazing by the statistic that the Allied bombings not only killed 20% of the civilian population, but also destroyed more than half of the historical buildings, leading to Zadar being dubbed "The Dresden of The Adriatic." Obviously distributed in a tiny run to a depleted and exhausted local populace, definitively ephemeral. No trace on OCLC.

Description: Fort Wayne, Indiana, 1862. Envelope or Cover. Very good. This four-page letter was sent by Emeline to her cousin in Mary at Bristol, New Hampshire. It is datelined “Fort Wayne Ind. Aug. 23”/62” and enclosed in a mailing envelope franked with a 3-cent Washington stamp (Scott #65) that was postmarked at Fort Wayne two days later. In this letter Emeline expressed her fear that the Union might not survive and her concern about the fate of captured soldiers that she knew. It reads in part: “The war is the all absorbing topic. What is to be the result of all our National troubles, God only knows. It seems that we just begin to realise. The excitement here is very great. I think the call will be for be for more men before the wicked rebellion will be crushed & I sometimes fear that we shall not be able to do it. Even after such a sacrifice of blood. I often hear that if the south succeeds, a secession of the west from the east is inevitable. How dreadful the thought of this nation becoming thus dismembered – God grant that light may speedily dawn upon us. . .. Have you read Mr. Owen’s letter to the Secy of War . . . on Emancipation? I am not sure but a ‘declaraton’ must come [and] it will come soon. The President must deeply feel the weight of responsibility resting on him – More much more nerve & wisdom he needs. We can only comfort ourselves with the thought that God will overrule all for good. . .. “Sometime since I saw in a paper that several U.S. Pay Masters had been taken prisoners by the Rebels and Haselton was one. . ..
